Liberating all of Tsushima means clearing every Mongol-occupied territory on the island. Doing so clears the fog of war region by region, reveals map markers for side tales and collectibles, and is tied to the Master Liberator trophy. It is a completion milestone inside the open world, not a separate ending. Optional stories and exploration content continue after it.
What “liberating all of Tsushima” covers
Liberation is handled territory by territory. A PowerPyx guide from 2020 counts 56 Mongol territories across the island’s three regions. Those counts come from that guide, so if your map shows a different total after later updates, trust the in-game map.

What you get when a region is cleared
- Fog of war lifts. Each liberated region is revealed on the map, so you can see its geography and points of interest without searching for them.
- Question-mark markers appear. Liberation reveals markers for collectibles and side tales. These are map information. Seeing a marker does not mean the activity is done.
- The Master Liberator trophy. The PowerPyx guide ties liberating the entire island to this trophy. It does not mean every optional activity in the game is complete.
What remains after the main story
Liberation is not limited to the story. According to the same PowerPyx guide, once the main story ends, the remaining Mongol camps are marked automatically on the map, and you can clear them in free roam. In other words, the final cleanup happens in the open world, at your own pace.
Optional content is a separate layer. PlayStation’s developer Q&A says the content outside the main story is designed to reward exploration, in a quote attributed to Jason: “We want to reward players for exploring the open world of Tsushima, So, all content outside of the main story offers a variety of rewards.” The same Q&A names collectibles, resources, charms, and some armor sets among those rewards, and it describes optional character tales alongside the main story.

Three completion states that are easy to confuse
| Completion state | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Main story finished | Jin’s primary story is complete. | All territories may still be occupied, and optional tales may remain. |
| All Mongol territories liberated | Every occupied territory in Izuhara, Toyotama, and Kamiagata is cleared, the fog is lifted, and the map markers appear. | Optional tales, collectibles, and expansion content are not automatically finished. |
| Optional tales, collectibles, and expansion content | Side stories, collectibles, and extra rewards outside the main story. | This is a separate progress track from liberation. |
Iki Island and the Director’s Cut
The Director’s Cut edition includes an Iki Island story, according to PlayStation’s official Ghost of Tsushima page. The sources available for this article do not establish whether liberating all of Tsushima is required to access Iki Island, so do not assume a specific unlock order. Check the in-game requirements if you plan around it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What liberation does not change
Neither PlayStation’s official material nor the PowerPyx guide describes a special cutscene, a new ending, or the disappearance of every hostile encounter as a result of full liberation. Treat the milestone as a map and trophy payoff, with the rest of the open-world content still available.
