If Galarian Articuno flies away while you are chasing it in Pokémon Sword or Shield’s Crown Tundra, keep searching: it roams around the area rather than being lost. Catch up to it again, then interact with the correct mirage it creates to begin the battle.
Why Galarian Articuno flies away
After the Legendary Clue 3 scene at Dyna Tree Hill, Peony’s call startles the three Galarian birds, sending them in different directions. Articuno then roams around the Crown Tundra as an overworld Pokémon. Its flight during the pursuit is part of that roaming encounter, not proof that it has disappeared permanently. Serebii’s Legendary Clue 3 guide describes the sequence and lists Articuno at level 70.
What to do when it flies off
- Continue looking around the Crown Tundra for Galarian Articuno and approach it again.
- When it stops and creates mirages, interact with one to test it.
- Choose the real Articuno rather than a mirage to start the battle.
The roaming encounter requires catching up to the Pokémon in the overworld; the mirage interaction is the step that leads into its battle. Bulbapedia’s roaming Pokémon entry describes this behavior for Sword and Shield.
If you knocked it out instead
That is different from seeing it fly away during the overworld chase. Bulbapedia reports that knocking out one of the Galarian birds makes it respawn instantly. The official Pokémon page consulted for Galarian Articuno does not confirm that specific knockout mechanic, so treat the immediate-respawn detail as Bulbapedia’s report rather than an official confirmation.

Which Articuno appears in the Crown Tundra?
This encounter is Galarian Articuno, not the original Articuno. The official Pokémon site identifies Galarian Articuno as a Psychic- and Flying-type Pokémon whose signature move is Freezing Glare, and says it appears in the Crown Tundra: Galarian Articuno’s official Pokédex page.
