Assuming you mean the 2020 sequel, Ori becomes the next Spirit Tree. Moon Studios founder Thomas Mahler says the final leaf is Ori’s child, making the ending a bittersweet transformation: Ori’s former life gives way to a new form, while Ori’s story continues.
How does Ori’s story end?
The final arc culminates in Ori becoming the next Spirit Tree. Mahler explained the closing image directly: “Right now Ori became the next tree and then that leaf is his child, which is this beautiful analogy to me about how life works–we all go through that process.” He described Will of the Wisps as the second half of Ori’s life, in which Ori grows from a child into a parent. So “Ori dies” is too blunt a description of what the ending means. Ori’s earlier, mobile life is sacrificed, but the new Spirit Tree is still Ori. In a 2023 Q&A on the official Ori site, Mahler said Ori had to become a parent “even if that meant sacrificing everything that had come before,” and called the story’s ending definitive. (Ori official site, March 2023)
What does the final leaf mean?
The leaf image comes full circle. Ori was associated with leaves from the beginning; at the end, Ori is the tree, and the leaf is Ori’s child. Mahler connected this change to the passage from childhood to adulthood and to becoming a parent. The ending is therefore about continuity through transformation, not Ori returning to the life they had before.

That makes the conclusion bittersweet rather than simply happy or tragic. A new generation begins, but Ori gives up the form and life that carried the journey. Mahler’s description frames that sacrifice as part of the cycle of life.
How do Ku, Naru, and Gumo fit into the ending?
The sequel’s family story begins with the egg from Ori and the Blind Forest hatching. Microsoft’s overview says Ori, Naru, and Gumo raise Ku, the young owl. Ku’s place in that family arc helps set up the sequel’s themes of care, loss, and parenthood. (Microsoft, March 2020)

Mahler also said the team changed an earlier version of the story in which Ku died. That development detail confirms Ku’s importance to the story, but it does not establish every beat of Ku’s final scene; it is better not to infer more from it than the creators’ comments support.
Does Shriek get a happy ending?
No. Mahler said Shriek was designed as a tragic character who “doesn’t actually get redemption.” He described Shriek as orphaned, misshapen, and shunned, and said the story considers the lasting effects of never having received love. The ending’s hopeful parent-child imagery does not resolve every character’s story happily. (GameSpot, April 28, 2020)

How is the finale staged?
Composer Gareth Coker described the finale as one continuous emotional sequence: it starts at the Spirit Willow, moves into a multi-phase final boss encounter, and continues through three outro cutscenes. He estimated it takes roughly 20–30 minutes, depending on player ability; that is his approximate estimate, not a formal play-time statistic. (GameSpot, April 28, 2020)
Coker singled out the moment when “Naru puts her paw, hand, whatever on the tree trunk.” He said it echoes Naru picking Ori up at the beginning of the first game, making it a personal emotional high point for him. (GameSpot, April 28, 2020)
