A bubble is not always a move-out request. Nintendo’s own guidance says it can mean the resident needs help with something, such as catching a bug or delivering an item, so the only reliable way to learn what it means is to talk to the villager. If the bubble is a move-out request and you do not respond to it that day, community references report that the bubble can remain or pass to another villager. A move-out only goes ahead when the player responds to the request.
What a thought bubble can mean
Nintendo’s Play Nintendo guide for the game states: “If a resident has a thought bubble over their head or runs up to you, you can talk to them and find out if they need any assistance.” The guide treats the bubble as a request for help, not as a warning. The examples it points to are everyday tasks such as catching a bug or delivering an item. That means a bubble on its own does not prove a villager is about to leave.
Speaking to the villager is the only step that tells you which kind of bubble you are looking at. Once you have talked to them, the request is clear and you can decide what to do with it.
What happens if you ignore a move-out bubble
Move-out requests are the case that worries players. The community-maintained Nookipedia summary of the game’s mechanics says that if the player does not interact with the villager showing the bubble that day, the bubble can transfer to another villager. A highly rated answer on GameFAQs makes the same point from the other side: the villager will not leave until the player talks to someone who has a move-out bubble.
#1 Best Overall
- Build your community from scratch on a deserted island brimming with possibility; Create your personal getaway and customize your character, home, decorations, and even the landscape itself
- Collect materials to construct everything from furniture to tools. Then, use what you create to give your island a personal touch
- Watch as the time of day and seasons match real life—even your hemisphere. Each day holds potential for surprises and discoveries
- Get to know the island residents, garden, fish, decorate, hunt for fossils, and more.
- Show off your paradise – play on the same system with a total of 4 people, or play together online or over local wireless for fun with up to 8 players
Taken together, these references mean that ignoring the bubble does not trigger a departure. The move-out is a two-part process that depends on your response, not on the bubble simply sitting there.
Your three responses compared
| Your response | What the references report | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Talk to the villager and choose to stay | The villager remains. A cooldown then applies before the same resident can ask to move again. | Five-day cooldown reported by Nookipedia and by the 2020 datamine report. |
| Talk to the villager and accept the move-out | The villager packs the following day and leaves the day after that. | About two days from acceptance to departure, according to Nookipedia. |
| Do not interact with the bubble that day | The bubble can transfer to another villager. The villager showing the bubble does not leave. | No fixed transfer schedule is established by the sources reviewed. |
Why the transfer rule matters
The transfer behavior is the part of the answer that players most often misread. A bubble that moves to a different villager is not a sign that someone has been removed from your island. It is a sign that the request is still active and now attached to someone else. Because the sources do not give a fixed time or a rotation rule, you should not plan around a particular number of days.

Move-out timing and cooldowns
Two cooldown figures appear across the references. Nookipedia describes a five-day cooldown after a villager asks to move but stays, and a 15-day period after a villager actually moves out. Nintendo Life reported the same cooldown lengths in May 2020, based on dataminer Ninji’s findings for game version 1.2.0, and said Ninji believed the behavior continued in version 1.2.1.
These figures come from a community wiki and a 2020 datamine report. They are the best available account of the hidden mechanics, but they have not been confirmed against later updates of the game. Treat them as the documented pattern for that period rather than a guarantee for your current copy.

- Take in-game photos of your designs and add them to your portfolio. Show them to other characters and you may get more requests to create vacation homes. Share the photos with other players using the in-game Showroom in the Happy Home Network app and they can tour your personally-designed resort islands or go tour theirs for some relaxation and inspiration.
- Purchase the Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise DLC from Nintendo eShop, or download and play it as part of an active Nintendo Switch Online plus Expansion Pack membership at no extra cost.
How the move-out request chance is reported
Ninji’s datamine also produced a formula for how often a move-out request is made. Nintendo Life reported it as “(v * 5) + c,” where v is the number of villagers on the island and c is the villager’s MoveOutTalkCount, which is capped at 30. This is a figure from a datamine, not an official Nintendo statistic, and it was reported for version 1.2.0. It explains why a move-out request can come up at all, but it does not tell you when a particular villager will ask.
What the sources do not establish
- Transfer timing. The references say the bubble can transfer, but none gives a fixed schedule for when that happens.
- Rotation. Players have asked whether the game cycles bubbles through villagers in a set order or chooses at random. The sources reviewed do not answer that question.
- Non-move-out bubbles. The references do not describe what happens if you ignore a bubble that is a favor rather than a move-out request.
- Current-version behavior. The cooldown and formula figures come from 2020 reporting on version 1.2.0. No current-version test is cited.
What to do when a bubble appears
- Walk up to the villager and talk to them. This is the only step that shows whether the bubble is a favor or a move-out request.
- If it is a favor, complete it. Nintendo’s guidance describes this as the purpose of the bubble.
- If it is a move-out request and you want them to stay, choose the stay response. Expect the five-day cooldown before they can ask again.
- If it is a move-out request and you accept, the villager packs the next day and leaves the day after.
- If you cannot talk to the villager that day, expect the bubble may pass to another resident. Check your other villagers for a new bubble rather than assuming someone has already gone.
Following these steps keeps the decision with you. Ignoring a bubble does not remove a villager from your island; it only leaves the choice unmade for that day.
