Using them does not trigger a morality meter or a documented gameplay punishment, but companions nearby may react, and the game blocks casting on Hogwarts grounds. The curses are optional for achievements and for completing Sebastian Sallow’s questline.
What each Unforgivable Curse does

The official Wizarding World FAQ confirms that all three curses are available to learn and play, describing them as having “devastating effects.” GameSpot’s Unforgivable Curses guide details their gameplay effects and quest opportunities.

What consequences follow from using them?
GameSpot reports that casting a curse does not activate a morality system or gamified punishment. That does not mean every character ignores it: a companion with you may look shocked or criticize you. You also cannot cast the curses on Hogwarts grounds.
GameSpot says using the spells does not block achievements or trophies, and that the curses are not required for the all-spells achievement or to finish Sebastian’s questline. This evidence addresses those gameplay systems; it does not establish that curse use has no effect on every narrative variable or ending.

Can you refuse to learn a curse?
Crucio
In “In the Shadow of the Study,” you can decline to learn Crucio. If you accept, the scene lets you choose whether Sebastian casts it on you or you cast it on him. Windows Central’s Crucio walkthrough reports that declining at this point leaves another chance to learn the spell from Sebastian later in the Undercroft.
Imperio and Avada Kedavra
You can decline to learn Imperio when it is offered in “In the Shadow of Time” and Avada Kedavra when it is offered in “In the Shadow of the Relic.” GameSpot places both opportunities in Sebastian’s questline; the spells are optional rather than prerequisites for completing it.

Does learning or using a curse change the ending?
The cited guides establish that curses are optional, describe companion reactions, and report no morality meter or gamified punishment. They do not establish that learning or casting a curse alone changes—or guarantees an unchanged—ending. Treat the choice as a combat and role-play decision, not as a proven way to select a particular ending.

How to decide whether to use them
- Choose Crucio for a pain-focused attack, Imperio to control an enemy, or Avada Kedavra for its lethal effect on non-boss enemies as described by GameSpot.
- If you prefer a character who avoids Dark Arts, you can refuse the learning prompts; declining Crucio at its first opportunity is not your only chance to learn it.
- If you are concerned about achievements or Sebastian’s questline, GameSpot reports that the curses are not required and that using them does not prevent achievement or trophy unlocks.
- If you want to avoid companion disapproval, be aware that companions may react when they witness a curse.
