What Happens If You Replay a Heist in GTA 5? Online and Story Mode Explained

Replaying a heist in GTA 5 works differently in GTA Online and Story Mode. Here is what Rockstar documents for Online, and what remains unconfirmed for the campaign.

In GTA Online, replaying a completed Heist is an official feature: call Lester on your in-game phone and select “Replay a Heist.” Leaders may face a short wait before running the same Heist again, while crew members can join without delay when a leader has an active lobby. In Story Mode, players commonly replay finished missions from the pause menu, but Rockstar’s published support material does not explain what that does to your save, your choices, or your payout. Treat the two modes separately, because the answers are not the same.

First, confirm which replay you mean

“Replay a heist” is used for two different features. Heists in GTA Online are multiplayer jobs started through Lester and the in-game phone. Story Mode heists are missions inside the single-player campaign. Rockstar documents the first clearly and says little about the second, so the rest of this article follows that split.

Replaying a Heist in GTA Online

Rockstar Games Customer Support describes the Online replay option directly: to replay a Heist, call Lester using your in-game phone and select the “Replay a Heist” option when he answers. The option covers Heists you have already completed.

Steps to start a replay

  1. Open your in-game phone in GTA Online.
  2. Choose the contact for Lester.
  3. When he answers, select “Replay a Heist.”
  4. Pick a Heist you have already completed and follow the normal launch flow.

Leaders, crew, and the wait

Rockstar’s update notes for the original Online Heists describe the access rules at the time they were written:

#1 Best Overall
IRIPLEZO Grand Theft Auto V
  • STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
  • FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
  • ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
  • TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
  • Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
  • Leader: there may be a short delay before the same Heist can be replayed again.
  • Crew member: you can join a leader’s active lobby without that delay.

Those notes are tied to a specific update, so treat the delay as a description of how the feature worked then rather than a fixed timer you can plan around.

The apartment replay board for the original Heists

The update notes also described an apartment replay board for the original five-Heist strand. Access to it required completing all five finales as leader or crew member, reaching Rank 12, and visiting Lester. This was a rule for that board, not a general requirement for every later Heist. Rank 12 is also a host prerequisite for the Heists covered in Rockstar’s access guide, and invited crew members are handled differently.

What the launch-era rewards promised

Rockstar’s 2015 announcement of GTA Online Heists said players could “replay each Heist to experience a different perspective on the action, and complete Elite Challenges for extra cash.” That description reflects the launch-era feature. It does not guarantee that every replay pays the same rewards today, and the official sources reviewed do not list current payouts for replays.

Replaying a story heist in Story Mode

Story Mode is where most of the confusion comes from. Players report replaying completed story missions through the pause menu. The commonly described path is Pause, then Game, then Replay Mission. These reports are community accounts, and menu labels may differ by platform or game version, so check your own pause menu before following them.

What is not established

The official material available for this topic does not say whether replaying a story heist:

  • overwrites or branches your active save;
  • changes choices made during the original mission, such as approach or crew selection;
  • pays out the original mission reward again.

Until Rockstar documents these effects, avoid assuming that a replay will rewrite the original outcome or add money. If the result matters to you, back up your save before replaying, or test it on a playthrough you are willing to lose.

Online replay and Story Mode replay compared

Question GTA Online Heist replay Story Mode mission replay
Entry point Call Lester on the in-game phone and select “Replay a Heist” (Rockstar Games Customer Support) Pause menu, then Game, then Replay Mission (reported by players; not stated in Rockstar’s support material reviewed)
Requirement The Heist must already be completed The mission must already be completed; the pause-menu path is community-reported
Wait between replays Short delay for a leader; no delay for crew joining an active lobby (Rockstar update notes for the original Heists, date not stated in the notes reviewed) Not stated by an official source
Documented reward effect Launch-era announcement mentions Elite Challenges for extra cash (Rockstar, 2015); current payouts not stated Not stated by an official source
Effect on save or campaign Not applicable as a persistent save reset; the source reviewed describes access, not save state Not stated by an official source

Before you replay

  • For GTA Online, confirm the Heist is on your completed list and check your Rank if you plan to host.
  • For a leader, expect a possible wait before running the same Heist again, and join as crew if an active lobby is already open.
  • For Story Mode, back up your save if the original outcome matters to you.
  • Do not plan a replay around a money gain unless you have verified the payout yourself on your platform.

Rockstar’s support sentence and update notes are the most reliable guidance here. Anything about Story Mode saves or payouts should be verified by playing it.
