There is no automatic answer: a studio’s employment or ownership can change without changing who owns the game, who publishes it, or who operates its servers. The studio might take its games with it, the platform holder might retain them, a new publisher might step in, or the game might be delisted or shut down. To know whether a particular game will keep working, check its rights, publisher, store status, and online requirements separately.
Does a studio take its games with it?
Not necessarily. The company that develops a game and the party that owns its intellectual property (IP) can be different. Publishing, distribution, platform permissions, and ongoing service operations may also be governed separately. A studio leaving a platform holder therefore does not, on its own, establish who owns a game or what happens to it.
The terms of each departure matter. On July 6, 2026, Double Fine said it had become independent again and that the arrangement “returns ownership of our games to us.” That is a documented outcome for Double Fine, not a rule that studios automatically regain their back catalogs when they leave a platform holder. Double Fine Productions’ announcement describes that specific agreement.
A studio can also close while its former platform holder retains a game or franchise. On October 29, 2024, Sony said it would close Firewalk Studios and permanently sunset Concord. That announcement shows a platform holder choosing to end a game while closing its developer; studio closure alone does not transfer a game to the studio’s former staff or another company. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s update states its decision about Concord and Firewalk.

Can a new publisher take over?
Yes. A departure can come with a new publishing arrangement rather than a return of the game to its developer or an immediate shutdown. In an update reported on September 22, 2026, Xbox said Compulsion Games and Double Fine returned to management with their IP, back catalogs, and runway funding. It said Undead Labs transitioned on similar terms with a new publisher for State of Decay 3, which was slated for a day-one Game Pass release. The same update said proposed agreements for Ninja Theory had fallen through and consultation on a proposed closure would begin, while consultation for Arkane remained underway. Those different outcomes illustrate why plans in progress should not be treated as completed transfers. The September 22 report on Xbox’s update summarizes those announced arrangements.
A platform-holder acquisition also does not necessarily mean an immediate move to exclusive releases. In its January 31, 2022 announcement of its Bungie transaction, Sony described Bungie as an independent subsidiary able to self-publish and reach players across platforms. That is the arrangement Sony announced at that date, not a guarantee that every later business or publishing term would remain unchanged. Sony’s Bungie announcement sets out that description.

Can the publisher keep selling the game?
Possibly, but a game’s ownership does not by itself guarantee that it can be sold on every platform. Publishing agreements and platform permissions matter. Take-Two Interactive’s Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2025, says the company must obtain licenses from competitors including Sony and Microsoft to develop and publish titles for their hardware. That filing provides publisher-side context: a rights holder may still need the relevant platform provider’s permission to distribute a game on its system. It does not establish the private terms of any other publisher’s agreement. Take-Two’s Form 10-K describes that licensing requirement.
Check a game’s current store listing separately from whether existing owners can still download or play it. A publisher may stop new sales while a game remains accessible to previous purchasers, or a platform arrangement may change what is offered in a particular store. A delisting, a server shutdown, and the loss of a platform license are distinct events; one does not prove that the others have happened.

Will a game still work if its studio closes?
That depends on which parts of the game rely on the studio’s ongoing work or on servers operated by the publisher or another provider. An offline campaign may continue after online functions end, but a title that requires an online connection can become unplayable when its service closes.
Offline campaign remains playable
PlayStation Support says LittleBigPlanet 3’s online services and access to other players’ creations are unavailable, while “Offline features such as the campaign will remain playable.” That distinction applies to the stated status of LittleBigPlanet 3; it should not be assumed for another game. PlayStation’s service notice provides the game-specific details.

Online access is required
The same PlayStation Support notice says GUNS UP! would not be playable after its shutdown because the title requires online access. This is the opposite case: when a game depends on a live service even for basic access, ending that service can end play entirely.
Server shutdown can also affect sales
For Bless Unleashed, Bandai Namco said on September 1, 2022, that its agreement with developer Round8 had ended and it could no longer continue supporting the game. The publisher announced that servers would close on November 30, 2022, and that purchases would be removed from Sony and Microsoft stores beginning September 1, 2022. The announced dates show that a game’s sales can stop before its servers do; the notice describes that particular 2022 shutdown, not a general timetable for other games. Bandai Namco’s service-closure announcement gives the dates and details.

How to check what is happening to a specific game
Look for statements from the studio, publisher, platform holder, and relevant support pages. Use them to answer each question independently rather than inferring a game’s fate from a studio’s corporate status.
- Who owns the game or IP? Find a specific announcement or reliable rights record. A developer credit does not prove ownership, and a studio’s departure does not prove that the rights moved with it.
- Who publishes and supports it now? Confirm whether the original publisher remains responsible, a new publisher has taken over, the platform holder operates it, or no active operator has been announced.
- Where can it be bought or downloaded? Check the relevant platform’s live store listing, and distinguish new sales from access for people who already own the game.
- What needs servers? Look for separate information about campaign or offline play, multiplayer, connected features, and access to user-created content. A notice that online services ended does not by itself answer whether offline play remains.
- What event has actually been announced? Verify whether the news is about a studio closure, project cancellation, server shutdown, or delisting. These describe different changes and can occur at different times.
Company announcements establish what their authors said about particular deals and games; they do not reveal every private contract or create a universal legal rule across jurisdictions. Where a company has announced a plan rather than a completed transition, treat the status accordingly and check for later statements before relying on it.
