Existing owners can generally download, install and launch the game. The important exception is online functionality: matchmaking, cloud-backed progression and other hosted features can disappear when the developer shuts down its servers.
Delisting also does not automatically create a refund right. Steam’s normal refund policy applies unless Valve or the developer announces a specific exception.

Delisted means the store listing is gone, not necessarily your game
Valve’s official process uses the term retired. A retired product is removed from Steam’s store listings so new customers can no longer discover and buy it through the normal store. The game’s store page can remain accessible, however, allowing visitors to see its existing information even though the purchase option is gone. Valve documents this distinction in Removing a product from Steam.
That store status affects new sales and discovery. It does not, by itself, revoke the license of a customer who already bought the game. Think of four separate layers:

- Store listing: whether new customers can find and purchase the title.
- Library license: the entitlement attached to an account that bought or activated it.
- Installed files: the copy already stored on a computer or downloaded later.
- Online services: servers, matchmaking, accounts, cloud systems and other features operated outside the local game.
A delisting directly changes the first layer. The other three require separate checks.
What existing owners normally retain
Valve’s retirement documentation states: “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries. Those players will continue to be able to download, install, and launch the game.” That is the normal outcome for a game removed through the ordinary retirement process.
For an owner, the practical result is usually straightforward:
- Open the Steam client and switch to Library.
- Search for the title using the library search box, rather than the store search.
- Select the game and choose Install if it is not already on the computer.
- After installation, use Play as usual. Steam may still perform whatever file validation or update check is available for that title.
A delisted game may therefore remain playable for years after its store page stops accepting purchases. A developer announcement for Seeking Evil: The Wendigo records this owner-access outcome after the game’s July 21, 2025 delisting; existing owners retained access through their libraries. This is a policy description of the ordinary case, not an unconditional promise covering every possible account or licensing problem. An account restriction, a failed activation, a separate publisher account, or an exceptional removal can create a different support case. If the title is absent from your library despite a genuine purchase, open Steam Support and use the purchase history entry for that transaction.

Already-installed copies
If the game is installed, delisting does not normally delete its local files. You can try launching it from the library or its existing shortcut. Keep in mind that an installed copy can still depend on an external login, license check or server; local files alone do not guarantee that every mode will start.
Can you still download and install it?
For a normal retirement, yes. Valve specifically says owners can continue to download and install retired games. The game may no longer appear in Steam’s store search, but the library entry is the relevant place to look.

Valve’s retirement guidance confirms the ability to download, install and launch; it does not promise that developers will publish future patches, that every historical build will remain available, or that a game will run on operating systems and hardware released years later. Compatibility can change even while the library license remains.
If Steam shows the game in your library but installation fails, record the exact error and check the title’s announcements for a required launcher, account migration or service shutdown. If the purchase itself is missing, verify that you are signed into the Steam account that made the purchase before contacting support.
Will multiplayer still work?
Delisting and server shutdown are separate events. A game can be removed from sale while its matchmaking servers continue running, or it can remain in owners’ libraries after those servers have been switched off. Online play depends on the game’s own backend, not merely on the presence of a Steam library button.

Possible outcomes include:
- Online services continue: matchmaking, leaderboards or account-based progression may work normally for as long as the operator maintains them.
- Some services end: matchmaking may stop while menus, campaigns or local multiplayer remain usable.
- The backend is required for startup: the game may become effectively unplayable if it cannot authenticate or contact its service.
- Offline or local play survives: a self-contained campaign or local network mode can remain available after online features disappear.
The developer of Nubs! Arena illustrated the middle case in a July 7, 2026 announcement. It said that once the servers went offline, online matchmaking and online-specific achievements would no longer be available, while owners could still download the game from their Steam libraries and play locally with friends. This is a title-specific statement, not a guarantee for every delisted game; read the Nubs! Arena announcement for that example.

- Open the game’s Steam store page, if it remains accessible, and look for the developer’s announcements or notices.
- Check the developer or publisher’s official announcement for a server-closure date and a list of affected modes.
- Separate features that run locally from those requiring matchmaking, a persistent account or cloud data.
- Test the mode you care about while the service is still announced as active; a library entry cannot reveal whether a remote server is healthy.
Do not infer that “delisted” means “offline,” and do not infer that a functioning local campaign means online progression will remain.
Updates, patches and long-term compatibility
Owners may continue to receive files that the developer still publishes, but Valve’s retirement documentation does not promise ongoing updates. A developer can stop patching a retired game, leave its final build unchanged, or discontinue a required launcher or backend.
There are two separate preservation questions:
- Can Steam deliver the game? For normally retired titles, owners retain download and installation access.
- Will that build run in the future? That depends on the game’s code, operating-system compatibility, drivers, authentication and any third-party services.
Keeping a game in your library is therefore useful but not equivalent to a guaranteed future-proof archive. Avoid promising that every old build will work indefinitely; the available Valve policy does not make that claim.
Does delisting qualify you for a refund?
No automatic refund follows from a delisting. Valve states that purchases of retired games remain covered by the normal Steam refund policy, while noting that it may extend refunds in particular circumstances. The retirement guidance says, “All purchases are covered by the normal Steam refund policy.”

Steam’s general terms, on the Steam Refunds page last updated April 23, 2024, generally allow a request for a game made within 14 days of purchase and played for less than two hours. Those are the standard thresholds, not a special delisting rule. A request outside them can still be submitted for review, but approval is not guaranteed.
How to submit a request
- Open Steam Support and choose the purchase from your account’s purchase history.
- Select the refund option and explain the relevant circumstance, such as a promised feature becoming unavailable or a service shutdown.
- Submit the request even if it falls outside the standard 14-day or two-hour limits; Steam can review exceptions individually.
- Check the developer’s announcement for a separately announced refund window before assuming the ordinary policy is the only option.
Do not describe a refund as certain merely because a game was removed from sale. The outcome depends on the normal policy, the timing and playtime of the purchase, and any exception Valve or the developer chooses to publish.
What about a key bought somewhere else?
A third-party key is not a guaranteed replacement for a Steam purchase. Valve’s developer instructions say Steam keys should also be retired from other stores when a product is retired. Availability on another storefront may therefore disappear, and a listing by an unauthorised reseller does not establish that the key is valid or supported.
Valve also says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys. If you bought a code from another retailer, that retailer—not Steam—controls the transaction and any refund process. Treat unusually expensive or newly listed keys as a risk rather than assuming they preserve the same support or online access as an existing Steam license.
A practical checklist for one delisted title
Use this sequence when you need a definite answer about a particular game:

- Confirm the store status. Open the old Steam page if possible. A visible page with no purchase option indicates that the listing has been removed; it does not by itself describe the owner’s library rights.
- Confirm the entitlement. Sign into the account that purchased or activated the game and search the Library, not just the store.
- Test installation and launch. Download the game or start the installed copy. Record any authentication or launcher error exactly.
- Identify local modes. Look for a campaign, split-screen, local network or other mode that does not require a remote service.
- Read the developer’s notice. Find the announced dates for server retirement, feature removals and any special refund arrangement.
- Check the refund window. Compare purchase date and playtime with Steam’s 14-day and less-than-two-hour standards, then submit a support request if circumstances justify review.

Common situations and their likely result

Troubleshooting after a delisting
The game is not visible in your library
Check that you are using the purchasing account, search with library filters cleared, and review the account’s purchase history. If the transaction is present but the library entry is not, send that evidence to Steam Support.
The download starts but the game will not launch
Read the developer’s latest notice for a discontinued launcher, account requirement or server dependency. A delisting does not explain every launch failure, and Valve’s policy does not promise compatibility with future operating systems.
The campaign works but multiplayer does not
Look for a server-closure announcement and distinguish matchmaking from local play. The Nubs! Arena example shows why a game can remain downloadable and locally playable after online features end.

You want a refund because the game disappeared from sale
Submit the purchase through Steam Support, include the purchase date and playtime, and describe the specific lost functionality. Delisting alone is not an automatic exception.
The bottom line for owners and prospective buyers
For an ordinarily retired Steam game, existing owners keep the library entitlement and can normally download, install and launch the title. The durable part of that arrangement is access to the Steam library entry; the fragile part is anything operated remotely. Matchmaking, persistent progression, authentication and other hosted systems can end on a schedule set by the developer.
Before relying on a delisted game, verify its own announcement, test the modes you care about and save the purchase details needed for support. Treat refunds as policy-based requests rather than an automatic consequence, and do not rely on third-party keys as an official substitute.
