An AHL call-up usually changes which salary rate applies under the player’s existing NHL contract; it does not mean he has signed a new deal or must play an NHL game before the salary rule takes effect. Under the NHL/NHLPA CBA, NHL Paragraph 1 salary generally begins on the recall date if the recall happens before 5:00 p.m. New York time. Whether the player has a one-way or two-way contract determines whether his NHL and AHL salary rates are the same or different.
Does a call-up create a new contract?
No. A recall is a roster move under an existing NHL Standard Player’s Contract (SPC). The relevant salary question is which Paragraph 1 salary rate applies and when it starts—not whether the player has signed a new contract. The NHL/NHLPA CBA player notice says NHL salary commences on recall, subject to a stated time cutoff.

These terms describe salary rates, not waiver eligibility. A two-way contract does not, by itself, establish whether a player must clear waivers to be assigned or recalled; that is a separate CBA question. The player’s contract and applicable provisions govern the specific case.

When does NHL salary start after a recall?
The CBA player notice states: “If you are Recalled to an NHL Club prior to 5:00 PM New York time on a particular day, your Paragraph 1 NHL Salary shall commence on the date of Recall.” Accordingly, for a recall before that cutoff, NHL Paragraph 1 salary starts on the recall date. The cited notice does not establish the result for a recall at or after 5:00 p.m. New York time; that situation requires checking the full applicable CBA language rather than assuming the same effective date.
The rule concerns the applicable salary rate and its start date. It does not, by itself, determine a player’s daily cash calculation, take-home pay, bonuses, taxes, or a club’s salary-cap charge.

What changed under the 2026–27 CBA?
As of October 4, 2026, the new CBA is in effect; its term began September 16, 2026 and runs through September 15, 2030. The NHL’s 2026–27 CBA explainer says a player assigned to the AHL must appear in a minor-league game before his NHL club recalls him again. This is an assignment-and-recall procedure, separate from the rule governing when NHL salary begins after a recall.

The explainer lists the NHL minimum salary as $850,000 for the 2026–27 season. That is a league minimum, not a presumed salary for a particular recalled player or a special call-up rate. A player’s own SPC determines his individual salary terms.

What determines a specific player’s pay?
For a named player or disputed transaction, the answer depends on the player’s SPC and the current CBA and memoranda of understanding. Contract salary, any applicable bonuses, recall category, transaction timing, and waiver status may matter. The NHL maintains its CBA and MOU index, including the July 2025 NHL/NHLPA MOU; the league also announced the four-year CBA extension.
