When does access actually stop?
There are two different events to keep straight: canceling the next renewal and reaching the end of the paid subscription period. Canceling stops the subscription from renewing; it does not, by itself, remove the benefits you have already paid for. That means you can generally keep playing an eligible catalog game between the date you cancel and the paid-through date, provided the game remains in the catalog and your membership still includes the relevant benefit. After the subscription period ends, downloading the game earlier or leaving it installed does not turn subscription access into ownership. What happens to each kind of PlayStation Plus game?
“A PlayStation Plus game” can mean several different things. The outcome depends on how the game entered your library, rather than whether it is currently downloaded.

The table describes entitlement, not installation. A downloaded subscription game may stay on the console’s storage, but the download itself does not grant continued permission to play after membership access ends. Conversely, a separately purchased game does not become a subscription game merely because you bought it while subscribed.
When checking your library, distinguish a game claimed as a monthly benefit from a game you actually purchased. Sony’s wording is that monthly games can be added to your library and played “as long as you have an active membership plan.” A library entry records the game’s availability to your account; it does not necessarily mean you hold a permanent purchase license.
Can a game leave while your subscription is still active?
Yes. The Game Catalog and Classics Catalog can change, and Sony says some titles have an announced end date when they will be removed from PlayStation Plus. A game leaving the service is a separate event from your own subscription expiring: either one can end your access first. Sony says end dates are publicized ahead of time, but its general guidance does not guarantee that any particular title will remain available through a particular subscriber’s paid-through date. A catalog listing is evidence of current service availability, not a promise that the title will remain included indefinitely.

It is useful to think of access as depending on two separate conditions: your account must have an active plan with the relevant benefit, and the specific game must still be offered in the catalog. If the title’s announced removal date comes first, an active subscription alone will not preserve access to that catalog version. If your paid period ends first, a game still listed in the catalog will nevertheless be unavailable to you until you have the required membership again.
What happens to monthly games?
Monthly games are not identical to rotating Game Catalog titles, but their access is also a membership benefit. Sony says a monthly game can be added to your library and downloaded and played while you have an active membership plan. This distinction helps explain why a game might remain in your library after expiry but still be inaccessible. A library entry or a saved installation is not the same as a retained purchase entitlement. If you want to keep playing after membership access ends, you need the applicable active membership or a separate purchase of the game.
What happens to DLC bought for a catalog game?
DLC and add-ons depend on access to the base game. Sony says add-ons bought for a downloaded catalog game cannot be used if your membership expires or if that game leaves the service. Sony also says access to those add-ons can return if you resubscribe or buy the base game. Sony’s catalog FAQ

So owning an add-on does not, on its own, preserve access to a base game that was only available through the catalog. Before buying DLC for a subscription title, consider whether you would still want to buy the base game separately if it leaves the service or your membership lapses. The official guidance establishes the access relationship, but does not promise that every game or add-on will have identical purchase, compatibility, or availability options in every region.
Which PlayStation Plus plan includes catalog access?
Plan benefits are relevant because catalog access requires the corresponding membership. Sony says Extra includes the Game Catalog, while Premium includes both the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. Essential should not be treated as providing either catalog benefit based on those descriptions. Names, benefits, and the catalog available to subscribers can vary by region, so check the current local PlayStation Plus page and account offer rather than assuming a title or tier is identical everywhere. The plan name matters when you are checking a particular title, not just when you first subscribe. Confirm that the plan on your account includes the catalog where that title appears; the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog are distinct benefits. - Check your subscription account settings. Find the subscription’s renewal or paid-through date in your PlayStation account settings. The exact date is account-specific; Sony’s general cancellation guidance does not establish your individual expiry date. - Identify how the game was added. Determine whether it was a monthly game, a Game Catalog or Classics Catalog title, or a separate purchase. The library alone does not establish that a no-cost subscription title has become yours to keep.
- Check the title’s current catalog listing in your region. Look for an announced removal date. If it has one, that date may be earlier than your membership end date. Common misunderstandings
- “I canceled, so I lost access today.” Not necessarily. Cancellation stops renewal; Sony says benefits continue to the end of the period already paid for. Cancellation details
- “The game is installed, so I can keep playing.” Installation is not a substitute for the membership entitlement. Monthly and catalog games remain subject to the applicable active membership. Membership access details
- “Every PlayStation Plus game disappears at the same time.” A separately purchased game is retained; a monthly game is unavailable when membership ends; and a catalog title can become unavailable either when membership ends or when the title leaves the catalog.

What to expect if you resubscribe later
Sony says that if you resubscribe, access to DLC bought for a catalog game can return. This is not a guarantee that the same game will still be in the catalog when you return: catalog titles may be removed, and availability depends on the current service offering. The practical decision is therefore to separate three questions: whether the subscription period is still active, whether the title remains in the local catalog, and whether you own the base game outright. Those conditions determine access more reliably than whether the game appears installed or in the library.

Do I keep PS Plus Game Catalog games after my subscription expires?
No. A Game Catalog download is access through the applicable membership, not a permanent purchase. You can play while your membership is active and the title remains in the catalog; when either condition ends, catalog access ends.
Can I play downloaded PS Plus Extra games after canceling?
Usually, yes, until the end of the subscription period you have already paid for, provided the game remains in the catalog and your plan still includes it. Canceling renewal is different from the expiry date. Check your account settings for the paid-through date.

What happens to a monthly game I claimed before my membership ended?

Do PlayStation Plus discounted purchases disappear when the subscription ends?
