Extra is the lower tier to consider if access to that on-demand library is your main reason to upgrade. Premium includes Extra’s benefits and adds the Classics Catalog, Game Trials and cloud streaming where available. All three tiers include Monthly Games and online multiplayer.
Which PlayStation Plus tiers include the Game Catalog?
The Game Catalog is included with Extra and Premium, but not Essential. PlayStation describes it as a changing library of hundreds of games. That description does not guarantee that any particular game is available: the catalog varies over time and by tier, so check the current listing in your country before choosing a plan for a specific title. PlayStation’s US plan comparison and games and plans page describe the tiers and catalog.

The Game Catalog is a subscription library
Extra and Premium give members access to the Game Catalog, a library that PlayStation describes as containing hundreds of games. Its contents can change, and availability varies by tier and region. A large library does not mean every popular game is included, or that a game will remain available indefinitely. If one particular game is driving your decision, look it up in the current catalog for your country before paying for a higher tier.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
Game Catalog access is therefore different from buying a game outright. Your membership is the condition for access, and the title must still be listed for your plan and region. A game can leave the library even if it was available when you joined. Downloading a catalog game does not turn it into a permanently owned copy; continued access depends on an active qualifying membership and the game remaining included.
Monthly Games are a separate benefit
Essential includes Monthly Games even though it does not include the Game Catalog. Monthly Games are therefore not evidence that a member has Extra or Premium catalog access. All three tiers include Monthly Games and online multiplayer, alongside other shared core benefits.
That distinction explains why a player can see games offered through PlayStation Plus while subscribed to Essential and still lack the broader catalog. Monthly Games are the recurring games benefit attached to every tier. The Game Catalog is the larger, on-demand library added at Extra and Premium.

Premium’s Classics Catalog and Game Trials are different additions
Premium includes the Game Catalog through its Extra benefits, but it also adds the separate Classics Catalog and Game Trials. Those are Premium-specific reasons to consider the higher tier; they are not requirements for accessing the Game Catalog itself. Cloud streaming is another Premium addition, but it is available only where supported.
In practical terms, upgrading from Extra to Premium does not unlock the Game Catalog for the first time. Extra already does that. Premium changes the package by adding access to classic titles, trial opportunities and supported streaming, subject to regional conditions. This is the central distinction to keep in mind when comparing the two higher plans.
What every tier includes
All three plans share the core membership package. That includes online multiplayer, Monthly Games, discounts, exclusive content, Share Play and cloud storage. A player who only needs online multiplayer for purchased games does not have to select Extra or Premium to receive that shared benefit.
The shared benefits also mean that moving from Essential to Extra is an expansion, not a replacement. Extra keeps Essential’s core features and adds the Game Catalog plus Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium keeps those same benefits and adds its own higher-tier features. If a benefit appears in the Essential column, it remains part of the more expensive plans.
Use the shared-benefit list as a baseline, then ask which additional library or feature justifies the price difference. This prevents a common mistake: paying for Premium when the only desired feature is the Game Catalog, which is already included with Extra.
US plan prices and the cost of moving up a tier
The prices below are a snapshot displayed on PlayStation’s US pages, not a worldwide price list or a guarantee of the current checkout price. Check your local PlayStation Store before purchasing; prices can change. The US plan comparison lists the membership prices, and the games and plans page provides US purchase options.

| Tier | Monthly | Every three months | Annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $10.99 | $27.99 | $79.99 |
| Extra | $16.99 | $43.99 | $134.99 |
| Premium | $19.99 | $54.99 | $159.99 |
Using those US snapshot figures, the difference between Extra and Essential is $6 for one month, $16 for three months, or $55 for a year. Premium costs $3 more than Extra for one month, $11 more for three months, or $25 more for a year. These are simple differences between the listed prices, not a claim about future prices, taxes or prices in another country.
On an annual term, Extra is $55 above Essential, while Premium is $25 above Extra and $80 above Essential. On a monthly term, the corresponding gaps are $6 and $3. The term you choose changes the apparent upgrade cost, so compare plans using the same billing period rather than comparing a monthly Essential price with an annual Premium price.
The practical cost question is whether you will use the benefits that the higher tier adds during the period you pay for. If the Game Catalog is the deciding feature, compare Essential with Extra: Premium is not necessary for catalog access. If you also want Premium’s Classics Catalog, trials or supported cloud streaming, weigh those additions against the listed price difference and confirm that the features are available in your region.
Which tier makes sense for your use?
Choose Essential if you do not need the Game Catalog
Essential is the relevant option if you want the shared core benefits—such as online multiplayer and Monthly Games—but do not want an on-demand Game Catalog library. Its lack of catalog access is the key distinction; it does not mean that Essential lacks Monthly Games.
Essential can make sense for someone who mainly plays games they already own, wants online multiplayer, and is satisfied with the monthly offerings. It also avoids paying for a library you may not use. If your household rarely downloads subscription games, the lower tier keeps the decision simple.
Choose Extra if the Game Catalog is the reason you are upgrading
Extra is the straightforward choice when you want the Game Catalog without paying for Premium-only additions. It includes Essential benefits, access to the Game Catalog and Ubisoft+ Classics. Before subscribing for one specific game, check that the game appears in the current catalog for your country and tier.
Extra is also the cleanest comparison for players deciding whether a catalog subscription is worthwhile. You receive the on-demand library while retaining online multiplayer, Monthly Games, discounts, exclusive content, Share Play and cloud storage. Premium should enter the comparison only when its additional features have real value to you.
Consider Premium when its extra features matter to you
Premium includes everything in Extra, so it includes the Game Catalog. Its additional reasons to consider it are the Classics Catalog, Game Trials and cloud streaming where available. The US comparison page also lists a Sony Pictures Catalog. Do not choose Premium solely because you assume it is required for the Game Catalog: Extra includes that benefit.
Premium is most defensible when you expect to use more than one of its additions. For example, a player who wants classic games and regularly tests games through trials may value the $3 monthly or $25 annual US difference over Extra. A player in a region without the relevant streaming service should not count streaming toward the value calculation.

Extra versus Premium: the decision in one minute
Ask three questions. First, do you need the Game Catalog? If no, Essential may be enough. If yes, Extra qualifies. Second, do you specifically want the Classics Catalog or Game Trials? If yes, Premium adds those features. Third, can you use cloud streaming and any other Premium-listed benefit where you live and on your device? If not, Premium’s practical advantage is smaller.
Recommended Free Tools
There is no catalog-access advantage in Premium over Extra: both include the Game Catalog. The Premium decision is about its incremental features, not about a larger guarantee that every catalog game will be available. The library itself remains subject to changes in title availability, tier rules and regional listings.
How to check whether a game is included before subscribing
- Open the current PlayStation Plus games and plans page for your country. The linked games page here is for the US; use your local storefront if you are elsewhere.
- Search for the specific game. Confirm that it is listed in the Game Catalog, rather than relying on a general description such as “hundreds of games.”
- Check which tier is shown for access. Extra and Premium include the Game Catalog, but a title’s current listing and availability should decide whether the plan meets your needs.
- Check again close to purchase if access matters. PlayStation says the library varies over time and by tier, so an older list or mention of a game is not a reliable promise of current access.
This check matters particularly when you are subscribing for a single title or planning to play a game later: the membership gives access to a changing library, not a guarantee that a named game will remain included.
Also check the edition and platform shown in the listing. A catalog entry may distinguish versions or supported systems, so do not assume that finding a similarly named title means the exact edition you want is included. The storefront listing is the best place to resolve that question at the time you subscribe.
Regional availability and catalog changes to know about
- Catalogs vary by country and change over time. Use your country’s current listing to verify a game, rather than treating the US page or another region’s catalog as universal.
- PS4 additions may become less frequent. PlayStation says PS4 games will be added only intermittently from January 2026. That is a change to the cadence of future additions, not a statement that existing PS4 catalog games have all been removed.
- Premium cloud streaming is not universal. PlayStation’s US page describes streaming requirements, and its games page says streaming availability excludes overseas territories. Confirm regional and device conditions on the applicable local page before counting streaming as a benefit you can use.
- Some listed benefits are region-specific. The US comparison includes a Sony Pictures Catalog, but plan pages and available features can differ by country.
For current tier descriptions, start with the US plan comparison or the equivalent page for your region; for shared membership benefits, consult PlayStation Plus support.

If you are choosing a year of membership because you expect a steady flow of new PS4 games, treat that expectation cautiously. PlayStation’s stated cadence means future additions may be intermittent, while the existing library can still change independently.
Can a gift card pay for PlayStation Plus?
PlayStation says gift-card credit can be used toward any PlayStation Plus membership, and gift cards are sold through online and physical retailers. PlayStation Direct also lists digital gift cards and PlayStation Plus gift-card categories. A gift card can therefore be a payment option or a gift, but its value is not automatically equal to one specific tier.
Check the card’s region, denomination, current membership price and any applicable taxes before assuming it covers a monthly, three-month or annual plan. Retail availability and stock can change, and a card does not establish that a particular tier is available at a particular price. Confirm the balance and the local storefront terms at checkout.
Common buying mistakes to avoid
- Confusing Monthly Games with the Game Catalog. Essential has Monthly Games but no Game Catalog.
- Assuming Premium is required for catalog access. Extra already includes the Game Catalog.
- Using a foreign catalog as proof. Listings vary by country, so a US title list may not apply elsewhere.
- Treating “hundreds of games” as a fixed count. PlayStation uses that description without publishing a precise number on the reviewed pages, and the library changes.
- Assuming a downloaded game is permanently owned. Catalog access depends on membership and continued inclusion.
- Counting unavailable streaming features in the value calculation. Premium streaming has regional and device conditions.
- Comparing unlike billing periods. Evaluate monthly, three-month and annual prices on the same basis.
