After you rescue all 46 Grubs, collect the final reward, and return to the Grubhome, Grubfather is lying in the middle of the room with a swollen stomach. Grub sounds come from inside him. The scene strongly suggests the Grubs are entering a new stage of life, but the game does not show the transformation or confirm exactly what is happening.
When does Grubfather’s appearance change?
Grubfather first appears in the Grubhome, in the northwest corner of the Forgotten Crossroads, mourning the disappearance of his colony. The Grubs are trapped in jars across Hallownest. When you free one, it burrows away and returns to him; Grubfather gives rewards as your rescue total grows.
The changed scene comes after you have rescued all 46 Grubs and collected the rewards for them. Return to the Grubhome to see it. The dens are empty, and Grubfather is lying in the room’s centre with an extremely bloated stomach. Muffled Grub chatter can be heard from inside him. The Hollow Knight Wiki’s Grubfather character page describes the post-rescue scene and its apparent connection to the Grubs’ life cycle.
Did Grubfather eat the Grubs?
The scene can look like a dark visual gag, but it does not establish that Grubfather ate them. What the game shows is his swollen body and the sounds of Grubs inside him; it does not depict how they got there or show what happens next.

Metamorphosis is the best-supported interpretation. The all-Grubs achievement is called “Metamorphosis,” and the description for Grubberfly’s Elegy says it “Contains the gratitude of grubs who will move to the next stage of their lives.” Those clues, along with the final scene, point toward the Grubs changing into Grubberflies as part of their life cycle. The precise process—and Grubfather’s eventual fate—remains unexplained.
What do you get for rescuing all 46 Grubs?
Rescue rewards depend on the total number of Grubs saved, not on which specific ones you free. Rewards include Geo and items, with milestones along the way. Rescuing all 46 and returning to Grubfather for the final reward grants Grubberfly’s Elegy. Its description provides the clearest in-game clue that the Grubs are moving into another stage of life.

Where to find Grubfather
Look for the Grubhome in the northwest of the Forgotten Crossroads. Grubfather’s Dream Nail dialogue, transcribed by the Hollow Knight Wiki, reads: “Happy…happy…happy!!!”
