Ninja Theory has not been officially confirmed closed, and the new game Senua has not been officially canceled. Xbox said on September 22, 2026, that two agreements to transfer the studio to new ownership had fallen through. It would begin consulting employees about a proposed closure while continuing to explore other options. That leaves the studio’s future—and the announced 2027 plan for Senua—unresolved.
Is Ninja Theory shutting down?
Not yet, based on Xbox’s latest formal statement. On September 22, 2026, Xbox said: “Unfortunately, two separate agreements for Ninja Theory fell through. We will now begin consultation with employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other paths forward.” The wording describes a proposal and an employee consultation process, not a completed studio closure. Xbox also said it would keep considering alternatives. Xbox’s September 22 update
The failed transfer agreements explain why the studio’s ownership remained unsettled. Xbox did not announce a new buyer or specify what decision it would make after consultation.
What has been reported about staff layoffs?
In an October 5, 2026 report, PC Gamer said multiple Ninja Theory employees had posted during the preceding week that they had been let go or were at risk of losing their jobs. The report noted that UK consultation precedes actual layoffs, and that affected employees are not certain to be dismissed until the process concludes. These are reported employee posts, not an official headcount or confirmation that all staff have been laid off. PC Gamer’s October 5 report

Is the new game Senua canceled?
Xbox has not announced a cancellation in the sources available as of October 7, 2026. Nor has it confirmed that the game will still ship. The 2027 date is an announced plan, not a guarantee: Xbox’s later proposed-closure process leaves open what will happen to the project, its staff, and the studio after consultation.
The title is Senua, not an announced Hellblade III. Xbox describes it as an action-adventure set in the Hellblade universe and following the events of the first two games. In a June 7, 2026 interview, studio head Dom Matthews said the planned game would add more combat depth, puzzle-solving, exploration, and a larger interconnected world. He described its map as roughly twice the size of Hellblade II’s. These are the developer’s descriptions of the planned game, not independent assessments of finished gameplay. What happens to Hellblade II if the studio closes?
Hellblade II is already released, so the proposed closure does not undo its launch. Xbox announced a PlayStation 5 Standard Edition for August 12, 2025 at $49.99; that announcement does not establish whether it is a physical disc or what the game currently costs. Xbox’s PlayStation 5 announcement
The unresolved issue is the future of Ninja Theory and its in-progress work, not whether the released sequel exists. No official announcement reviewed here establishes what would happen to the studio’s staff, ownership, or Senua after consultation.
