A publisher may first remove the app from Google Play and the App Store, stop new purchases, and leave existing installations playable until a later server-closure date. Refunds, if offered, normally require a separate application, identity or account verification, and a strict deadline. Player data may be available through a short-lived request process, while game progress may simply become inaccessible when the servers go offline.
There is no industry-wide promise that unused currency will be refunded or that purchases will transfer to another title. The game’s official shutdown notice, its terms, the transaction platform and the consumer law in your purchase region determine what you can recover.

Delisting and server closure are different events
A delisting removes a game from a store’s search results and prevents most new downloads. It does not necessarily stop an already-installed copy from opening. A server shutdown is the later event that can disable login, matchmaking, cloud saves, inventory checks and other online functions. Some games are technically unplayable without those services; others may retain a limited offline mode.

Dates can be weeks or months apart, and the order varies. A notice may let existing players continue until the closure time even after the store listing disappears. Treat each date as a separate operational deadline rather than assuming that “delisted” means “already shut down.”

What happens to purchases and unused currency?
Most mobile-game purchases grant a limited right to use digital items under the game’s terms; they are not a permanent ownership interest in the game’s servers. A closure can therefore end access to items that were delivered correctly, subject to the publisher’s notice and mandatory consumer protections. Promotional currency, earned rewards and paid currency may also have different treatment.
Possible outcomes
- No shutdown refund: The publisher may state that leftover balances are not refundable, except where local law requires a remedy.
- Limited refund program: A notice may cover only unused paid currency, calculate value at a stated rate, and accept claims during a short application window.
- Platform or payment-route refund: You may be directed to Google Play, Apple or the original payment processor, with approval decided under that route’s rules.
- Case-specific transfer: A publisher may move eligible purchases to another live game, but this is an exceptional accommodation rather than a standard entitlement.
- Already-consumed items: Items spent before the cutoff may be excluded even when an unused balance qualifies.
A shutdown announcement should tell you which currency types qualify, whether the balance is measured at a particular closing time, how value is calculated, who may apply and which channel accepts the claim. An app-store receipt alone does not prove that a shutdown refund is available.

How to pursue a shutdown refund
Use the channel and dates in the game’s own notice. Do not assume that a normal store refund request replaces a publisher form, or that filing in both places automatically creates two valid claims.

- Identify the transaction and currency. Separate paid currency from promotional or earned currency. Record the in-game balance at the time the notice specifies, and save receipts, order IDs, dates, platform and region.
- Confirm eligibility. Read exclusions for consumed items, minimum balances, account age, country, payment method and the person allowed to apply. Some notices require the original account holder.
- Preserve account access. Keep the app installed and avoid unlinking, deleting the account or switching to a fresh installation when the notice says verification depends on existing data.
- Submit through the named route. Complete the publisher’s form or support ticket exactly as instructed. If the original transaction was processed by a store, follow the store’s refund workflow as well when the notice directs you to do so.
- Keep proof of submission. Save the completed form, screenshots, emails and case number. Support may close on a different date from the refund-application deadline.
- Wait for verification and resolution. A refund may require account matching or a stated valuation method. Do not delete relevant data while a claim is pending.
Google Play and Apple routes
Google Play’s developer documentation explains that buyers can request refunds and that developers manage orders and refunds in Play Console, subject to the developer’s policy and applicable law. Apple’s developer guidance points users to Apple’s refund-request process and separately explains account deletion. These platform procedures do not decide whether a particular shutdown’s unused balance qualifies; the game’s notice and the transaction facts still control.

Will game progress and personal data be deleted?
Progress is game state: levels, characters, inventory, currencies and other saved activity. Personal data is information associated with an account, such as identifiers, contact details, purchase records or support history. They may be held in the same backend, but they have different retention and request rules.
Progress after the servers go offline
If progress is stored on the publisher’s servers, the client app cannot retrieve it once those servers are retired. Electronic Arts stated this explicitly for The Sims Mobile: “Because game progress is stored on our servers, saved data will no longer be available.” A local cache or screenshot is not a portable save unless the publisher provides an export or migration tool.

Account-data requests and deletion
A publisher may offer a time-limited access request, then delete account information after end-of-service procedures. Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY VII EVER CRISIS notice described deletion after those procedures; Niantic’s Peridot notice gave players a deadline to contact support for account data. Missing that deadline can leave no practical way to obtain a copy.

Apple’s account-deletion guidance says: “Deleting an account removes the account from the developer’s records, along with any data associated with the account that the developer isn’t legally required to maintain.” That is a platform requirement for apps with account creation, not a promise that a closing game will preserve progress or provide an export. The developer should explain information it must retain and the deletion timeline.

Why deletion can affect a refund
Do not request account deletion reflexively. Rayark warned that deleting personal data before a Soul of Eden refund was completed could leave it without the information needed to process the claim. Read the refund and deletion instructions together, and make the refund claim first when the notice requires a live account.

Terms often describe virtual items as revocable, non-transferable rights rather than property held indefinitely. Supercell’s terms state that it is not required to provide a refund for unused virtual items when an account closes, while preserving statutory consumer rights. That language illustrates why a contractual “no refund” clause is not the same as a universal answer: mandatory rights in the player’s jurisdiction can still apply.
Check the law where you bought the item, not only where the publisher is headquartered. Digital-content rules, cooling-off exceptions, payment disputes and remedies for a service that ends early differ by jurisdiction and by the facts of the transaction. If the notice conflicts with a right you believe applies, keep all records and seek advice from the relevant consumer-protection authority or a qualified adviser.
Deadlines and evidence checklist
- Find the official closure notice and write down the delisting date, purchase cutoff, server-closure time, refund-application deadline, data-request deadline and support-closing date.
- Record your player ID, account email or platform identifier exactly as displayed. Screenshot the paid-currency balance if the notice uses a closing-time balance.
- Export or request account data before the stated deadline. A request for personal data is separate from a request to preserve game progress.
- Save store receipts, payment confirmations, order IDs, the notice, terms in force at purchase and every support response.
- Follow any instruction to keep the app installed, avoid reinstalling or retain the linked account until verification is complete.
- Submit the publisher form and any required Google Play, Apple or payment-processor request before the applicable cutoff.
- Do not count promotional currency, earned rewards or already-spent items as refundable unless the notice expressly includes them.
- After submitting, save the confirmation and monitor the contact method used. A closed support channel may prevent a late correction.
How to evaluate a particular shutdown notice
Use this comparison sequence before deciding whether to spend remaining currency, apply for a refund or delete your account:

Bottom line for players
Assume that server-stored progress and virtual items are temporary until the publisher states otherwise. Save evidence, identify every deadline, preserve the account while a claim is pending and use the exact refund or data-request channel named in the notice. A delisted app may continue briefly, but once the servers and support process close, recovery options can disappear. Only the specific game’s notice, terms, transaction route and applicable law can establish what you are entitled to keep or reclaim.
