Then use the console generation, exact error code, storage status and add-on state to choose the correct fix.
First, identify what “failed” means
Nintendo eShop problems that look identical can have completely different causes. Before changing settings or paying again, classify the symptom:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Payment failed or was declined: no completed transaction appears.
- Payment completed but nothing downloaded: the purchase exists, but the software is not installed or visible.
- Download paused or stuck: the title is queued, stopped or repeatedly fails.
- Download code rejected: an error number appears after entering a code.
- Game works but DLC is missing: the base software is installed, while an add-on is not available in-game.
Record the console generation (Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2), the country associated with the Nintendo Account and the complete error code. Menus, redemption rules, payment options and refund treatment vary by market and hardware generation.
Confirm whether Nintendo actually completed the purchase
Check the purchasing Nintendo Account
Digital entitlements belong to the Nintendo Account selected at purchase. On the console, identify which user started the transaction, then sign in to that same account on Nintendo’s account website. A different user on the same Switch can make the purchase appear to be missing even though the transaction succeeded.

Use the receipt and transaction record
Search the account’s email for Nintendo’s purchase receipt and compare the product name and amount with what you intended to buy. Where the account is in Japan, Nintendo’s transaction-history guidance says the website record can be viewed from a phone or computer and covers the previous two years. The page also notes that some transaction types are not listed, so an absent entry is not conclusive in every case.
If the receipt, account record and bank statement do not agree, do not place a second order. Save the date, amount, account email and any payment reference for Nintendo Support. A second purchase can create two valid charges without repairing the first problem.
Understand local refund and transfer limits
Nintendo’s Japan-market eShop usage notice says downloaded purchases are generally non-refundable and non-transferable, including in some situations before download or use. That is not a universal policy for every country. Use the support site for the account’s market before assuming a cancellation or refund is available.
If the purchase succeeded but the download is missing
Nintendo Switch 2: check Virtual Game Cards
On Nintendo Switch 2, open the HOME Menu and go to the Virtual Game Card area. Nintendo’s Switch 2 purchase instructions explain that loading the relevant Virtual Game Card can start the software download. The entitlement may therefore be present even when the eShop page does not offer the action you expect. The Switch 2 download-purchase instructions describe this account-and-card flow.

- Compatible with Top Devices: Perfectly compatible with Nintendo Switch (Not 2), Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Android phones, tablets, and even retro game emulators. Includes a full-size SD adapter for seamless use with laptops, handheld consoles, and compatible card readers.

- Battle-Tested Durability: Engineered for long sessions and intense environments. Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-resistant, X-ray safe — designed to withstand accidental drops, outdoor use, and frequent device swapping.
- Actual Capacity: Storage may be smaller than the labeled capacity because manufacturers use the decimal system (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) , operating systems display storage using the binary system (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This is a normal industry practice and does not affect performance.
Earlier Nintendo Switch: follow the current redownload menu
Redownload paths have changed between console generations and system versions. Nintendo’s Japan eShop usage and redownload page describes the account’s owned software and Virtual Game Card functions for its market. Use the menu labels shown on your console rather than an older video or guide. If the title appears under another user, change to the Nintendo Account that bought or redeemed it.
Check whether the software is already queued
Look for a download icon or progress indicator on the HOME Menu. A title can be owned but waiting behind another download, update or installation. Let the active item finish, then check the queue again. If the item is absent from both the owned-software area and the HOME Menu, return to the account check instead of purchasing it again.
Check storage and the actual download state
Measure free space before changing hardware
Nintendo’s Japan storage guidance says a download needs enough free capacity in system memory or on a compatible microSD card, and an update can require additional space beyond the base game. Check the console’s system settings for available memory and compare it with the game and update sizes shown by the eShop. A card only addresses a capacity shortage; it cannot fix an account, payment or redemption error. See Nintendo’s download-purchase procedure and redownload guidance for the menus used in that market.

Free space safely
- Remove or archive software you no longer need, while keeping its save data when the console offers that choice.
- Delete screenshots or videos only after copying anything you want to keep.
- For a microSD card, verify that it is compatible with the exact Switch model before buying or formatting it.
Do not buy storage as a response to a declined payment or an “already redeemed” code. Those errors occur before capacity becomes relevant.

- Store an entire game collection, plus screenshots and videos, with up to 64GB of additional memory (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less)
Know when downloads can pause
Nintendo’s Japan usage notes state that Switch downloads may continue during sleep, while playing a communication-capable game can pause downloads. Treat that behavior as model-, system-version- and market-specific. If the progress stops only while a networked game is running, close the game and allow the download to proceed from the HOME Menu or sleep mode.
Use the exact download-code error as a diagnosis
The following mappings come from Nintendo’s English Switch 2 page, Using the Download Code (Redeem). They apply to the cited Switch 2 redemption flow; do not assume the same meaning for another code, console or country.
| Error code | What it indicates | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 2813-0040 or 9001-0040 | The code has already been redeemed. | Check the HOME Menu, owned software and Virtual Game Card area. If the item is missing, another user or Nintendo Account may have redeemed it. |
| 2813-6561 or 9001-6561 | The code is incorrect or unavailable for the eShop/My Nintendo Store redemption flow. | Re-enter every character, distinguish similar characters, and verify that the code is intended for this service and market. |
| 2813-0055 or 9001-0055 | The content may not be available yet, including because its release date has not arrived. | Check the game or add-on’s announced release date and try again after it becomes available. |
When a code says it was already redeemed
Nintendo Support describes 2813-0040 and 9001-0040 as the error shown “when the download code you entered is already redeemed.” A used code cannot normally be applied to a second account. First inspect every user on the console and the Virtual Game Card list. If the software belongs to another account, sign in with that account to download it. If nobody recognizes the redemption, keep the code, receipt and account details and contact Nintendo Support or the retailer that issued the code.

When the code is incorrect or unavailable
Type the code again without adding spaces, checking each character against the printed or emailed version. Confirm that it is a Nintendo eShop or My Nintendo Store code for the same country or region as the account. A code purchased for a different service, market or console generation may be rejected even when every character is correct.

When the release date has not arrived
For 2813-0055 or 9001-0055, the code itself may be valid but the game or add-on is not redeemable yet. Wait until the stated release date and use the same account and redemption path. Do not repeatedly enter the code or buy another copy while availability is pending.

Verify the product and account match
Confirm that the add-on is for the exact base game edition installed on the console and that both purchases use the same Nintendo Account. Region-specific versions, bundles and upgrades can have separate entitlements. Nintendo’s account information page, Nintendo Account information, explains the account relationship for Japan-market purchases; use the equivalent local page for another country.
Close the base game completely
An add-on may not install while the base software remains suspended or running. Save your progress, return to the HOME Menu, highlight the game, choose the software-options menu and close it rather than leaving it suspended. Reopen the game after the add-on download or installation finishes. Nintendo’s add-on guidance also notes that some content must be claimed inside the game, so follow the publisher’s in-game instructions when the entitlement is installed but not visible.
Separate installation from in-game activation
If the eShop or Virtual Game Card shows the add-on as owned but the game does not, the remaining step may be an in-game claim, an update or a restart. If the add-on is not shown as owned at all, return to the transaction and account checks; restarting the game cannot create a missing purchase.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Payment, account and region checks
Payment methods are market-specific
Nintendo’s Japan page on payment methods for downloadable software documents options for Japanese accounts. Payment instruments, age requirements, parental controls and purchase limits differ elsewhere. A card decline should be handled through the payment provider and the local Nintendo account settings, not by entering a download code repeatedly.
Check country and region before redeeming
Account country, eShop region and code region must be compatible. The Japan purchase and account pages are useful references for Japanese users, but their rules are not universal instructions. If you moved countries, created a second account or received a code from another region, confirm eligibility on the Nintendo support site for the account’s current country before attempting another transaction.
Use parental-control and purchase-limit settings
A restriction can block a purchase even when the payment method works. Review the Nintendo Account’s age, parental-control and purchase-limit settings, then retry only after the restriction is intentionally changed by the account holder. Nintendo’s purchase-restrictions page is Japan-market guidance, so consult the local equivalent for other regions.

- Write down the Nintendo Account email, console model, country, title, transaction date, amount, code (without publishing it publicly) and complete error number.
- Capture the receipt, transaction record and HOME Menu or Virtual Game Card status.
- Use Nintendo’s support lookup for the exact error code and follow the instructions for your country and console generation.
- Contact Nintendo Support if the entitlement is absent after a confirmed charge, a code is marked redeemed by an unknown account, or the same error persists after the documented steps.
The available official material does not establish a universal outage test or one network-reset sequence for every Switch model and country. Avoid deleting account data or formatting the console as a first response; those actions do not resolve a wrongly selected purchasing account, an unreleased item or an already-used code.
