The Game Pass catalog is a subscription benefit; a separately purchased copy is a different account entitlement. You may continue using the purchased game through the supported Xbox or Windows installation method, subject to your account, region, licensing terms, platform requirements and any publisher services the game needs.
If you only played the game through Game Pass, your subscription access ends when the subscription expires, is canceled, or the title leaves the catalog. Having the game installed does not convert that subscription access into a purchase.

The short answer: subscription access and a purchase are separate
Xbox describes Game Pass as access to games in a changing library. Its official FAQ says subscribers can use games until the subscription is canceled or expires, or until a game leaves the Game Pass library. That is a catalog entitlement, not proof that you own every title listed there.
A separately purchased game is tied to the Microsoft account that acquired it. When the same title leaves Game Pass, the catalog entitlement ends, but the separate purchase record does not become a Game Pass loan and is not removed simply because the catalog listing changed.

The important question is therefore not “Was the game installed while I had Game Pass?” It is “Does this Microsoft account have a separate purchase record for the game?” Installation alone cannot answer that.
What happens in each situation
You bought the digital game separately
A separate digital purchase remains a separate purchase license. You should be able to launch the game using the purchasing account, or reinstall it from that account’s library using the supported Xbox or Windows method, even after the Game Pass listing ends.
That does not mean digital access is an unconditional, permanent guarantee. Microsoft’s US and Canada Consumer Store Terms of Sale, updated September 2026, say that software and other digital content made available through the Store is “licensed, not sold.” The terms also reserve circumstances in which Microsoft may disable access and state that Microsoft generally does not promise a re-download or replacement in every situation, except where applicable law requires one.

You never bought it separately
If Game Pass was your only entitlement, the game stops working through Game Pass when the title leaves the library. The installed files may remain on the console or PC, but the service can stop authorizing them. You would need to purchase the game, use another valid entitlement, or wait to see whether it returns to the catalog.
You downloaded it with a discount or perk
A discount offered to subscribers does not by itself create ownership. If you used the discount to complete a separate purchase, that purchase is the entitlement to check. If you only downloaded the game through the catalog, it remains subscription access.

You own a packaged disc
A physical Xbox game disc is a different format from a Store purchase. The disc is the relevant packaged copy, while digital content is governed by the Store’s licensing terms. A disc can therefore remain the basis for using the game after a Game Pass removal, but it does not eliminate every dependency: the console, required updates, account settings, publisher services and online features can still affect how the game works.
How to tell whether you actually bought the game
Check the Microsoft account you use on the console or PC, not just the device on which the game is installed. A family member’s account, a different Xbox profile or a different Microsoft login may have made the purchase.

- Confirm that the transaction is a completed purchase rather than a Game Pass installation, trial, claim or subscription benefit.
- Check the account’s Xbox library or owned-games area for the title.
- If you use a console with multiple accounts, sign in with the purchasing account and test the game there.
- Keep the order confirmation or transaction entry available if support needs to verify the entitlement.
A title appearing in your installed-games list is not enough evidence. Subscription installations and purchased installations can look similar until the service checks the license.
What to do when a departing game stops launching
First, identify the entitlement
Look for the purchase record before deleting or buying anything. If there is no separate transaction, the failure may simply reflect the Game Pass catalog end. If there is a purchase, continue with account and installation checks.
Sign in with the purchasing account
On Xbox, make sure the account that bought the game is present and properly signed in. A console can share some purchased content under its configured home-console arrangements, but the purchase still belongs to the acquiring account. On Windows, use the Microsoft account associated with the Store purchase and the supported Xbox app or Store installation flow.

Refresh the installation
Use the owned-games or library view to start the installation again. If the game was installed from Game Pass, remove the old installation only after confirming that the purchase appears in the library; then reinstall from the purchase entitlement. The exact menu labels can change with console and app updates, so use the current library and account pages rather than relying on an old screenshot.
Check the game’s current requirements
Some games require updates, a compatible console generation, a publisher account or online services. A Game Pass departure does not by itself explain every launch error. Read the current product information and error message, and distinguish a missing entitlement from a server, update or compatibility problem.
Contact support with transaction details
If a completed purchase is missing, provide the Microsoft account, order number, transaction date and platform. Do not repurchase immediately simply because the installed copy displays a subscription message; first establish whether the account’s purchase record is being recognized.
Digital ownership has limits you should understand
“You keep the game you bought” is useful shorthand, but it should not be read as a promise that every digital title will remain downloadable under all future conditions. The Store terms describe digital content as licensed and allow access to be disabled for certain reasons. They also disclaim a general obligation to provide a replacement or re-download except where law requires it.
That qualification is separate from a Game Pass removal. A catalog change does not cancel a valid purchase entitlement, but the purchase is still governed by the Store terms, account status, regional rules and technical operation of the platform.

Region changes can affect re-downloads
The cited Microsoft Store terms for the United States and Canada warn that changing an account or device profile region can prevent re-downloading or re-streaming purchased content and may require a repurchase in the new region. This is a regional qualification, not a rule that can automatically be applied to every country.
Before changing your account region, check the consequences for the specific content and storefront. Keep the original purchasing account and transaction information. A game that was available in one storefront may have different availability, editions or rights in another.
Installed is not the same as entitled
Game files and the license that authorizes them are separate things. A title can stay on storage after its catalog listing ends, yet fail a license check when launched. Conversely, a purchased title may be absent from the device but remain available for installation from the owning account’s library.
This distinction explains why deleting a Game Pass installation does not prove that you lost a purchase, and why keeping the files does not prove that you own the game. Verify the account entitlement first, then choose whether to reinstall.

Game Pass availability is always changeable
Xbox says game availability varies over time, region, plan and platform. The same title can therefore be present for one subscriber and absent for another, or available on one platform but not another. Check the live Game Pass library for your region, plan and platform before relying on catalog access.
Do not treat an old list, a search result or a screenshot as proof that a game is currently included. Catalog status can change after an article, video or purchase decision was published.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Mistake: assuming an installed game was purchased. Fix: verify the transaction in purchase history.
- Mistake: using the wrong Microsoft account. Fix: sign in with the account that completed the order.
- Mistake: deleting files before checking ownership. Fix: confirm the library entitlement first.
- Mistake: treating a subscription discount as ownership. Fix: distinguish a completed purchase from a catalog download.
- Mistake: changing regions without checking Store rules. Fix: review the applicable regional terms before moving the account or device profile.
- Mistake: blaming Game Pass for every launch failure. Fix: check updates, compatibility, account requirements and publisher services as separate causes.
A practical decision tree
- Did you complete a separate purchase? If no, your Game Pass access ends when the title leaves the library or your subscription ends. If yes, continue.
- Can you see the transaction on the purchasing account? If no, check other Microsoft accounts and contact support before buying again.
- Does the owned-games library offer installation? If yes, reinstall through that listing. If no, investigate account, region and Store entitlement issues.
- Does the game still fail after reinstalling? Check updates, platform compatibility, required accounts and online services; the catalog departure may not be the cause.
What you should remember
Game Pass is time-limited library access. A separately purchased game is a distinct entitlement, so its Game Pass departure does not by itself erase the purchase. The safest way to establish what you can play is to verify the Microsoft account’s transaction history and owned-games library, while remembering that digital content is licensed under Store terms, regional changes can affect access, and every game may have its own technical or online requirements.
