What Happens to Your Games When a Publisher Shuts Down Its Servers?

Server shutdowns have different effects: a game’s offline campaign may survive, or essential online dependencies may make the whole title inaccessible. Here’s how to check.

It depends on what the game’s servers do. A shutdown may remove multiplayer or other online features while leaving the offline campaign playable—or it may make the entire game inaccessible if essential gameplay or authentication depends on those servers. Check the game’s end-of-service notice rather than assuming every shutdown has the same result.

What can stop working when a game’s servers close?

A server shutdown can affect only connected features, or it can prevent the game from launching or being played at all. Publishers may use central servers to run gameplay, but also to check a player’s licence, provide matchmaking, enable social features, or support cloud saves. The practical question is whether the game has a supported way to function without the service being discontinued.

  • Online features may disappear: multiplayer, matchmaking, leaderboards, events, news feeds, or sharing player-created content can end even if other parts of the game remain available.
  • The offline portion may survive: a campaign or local mode may continue to work if it runs on the player’s device and does not require server authentication.
  • The whole game may become inaccessible: if a server is essential to the core gameplay loop or to authentication, a locally installed game may not be enough to play.

These outcomes can differ within one title: online services, downloaded add-ons, local saves, and user-created content do not necessarily have the same fate.

What official shutdown examples show

Publisher and platform notices illustrate why it is important to check the specific game, affected platforms, and features named in an announcement.

Game or notice What the notice said What that means for players
The Crew (Ubisoft) Ubisoft said it would delist the game and virtual-currency packs, keep the game playable until March 31, 2024, then shut down its servers. It said the game would not be accessible on any platform after that date, naming PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna, and Ubisoft+. Ubisoft cited server infrastructure and licensing constraints. The notice described complete loss of access after the shutdown, not just the end of multiplayer. Ubisoft advised recent purchasers to check their store’s refund policy.
Gran Turismo Sport (PlayStation) PlayStation’s maintained service notice says online services ended January 31, 2024. The notice says offline portions, including purchased add-ons, could still be played.
LittleBigPlanet 3 (PlayStation) PlayStation’s maintained notice says online services and shared creations were unavailable. It says locally stored user-created content and offline campaign play remained available.
GUNS UP! (PlayStation) PlayStation’s maintained notice says the game required an online connection. The notice says it would not be playable after online functions ended.
XDefiant (Ubisoft) Ubisoft announced on December 3, 2024, that registrations, downloads, and purchases would stop immediately and that servers would remain active until June 3, 2025. This is an example of a sales and download change preceding a later server closure. The announcement alone does not establish what offline play, if any, is available afterward.

These examples are from Ubisoft’s An Update on The Crew (December 2023), Ubisoft Support’s maintained notice for legacy games, and PlayStation’s maintained “Support for games you can play online” notice. Read the current notice for the particular game: the scope and dates of service changes are title-specific.

Delisting, downloads, and playability are separate issues

A game can stop being sold before its servers close. A shutdown notice may also address new downloads or purchases without explaining whether existing owners can redownload the game later. And neither delisting nor the end of downloads, by itself, tells you whether an installed copy will still run offline.

  • Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
  • Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
  • Detachable Joy-Con controllers
  • Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends

Ubisoft’s The Crew announcement treated delisting and later inaccessibility as separate steps: sales were to end before the March 31, 2024 server shutdown. For any other game, look for explicit information about the store, redownloads, add-ons, and offline functionality rather than inferring one from another.

How to check whether you can keep playing

  1. Find the publisher’s official end-of-service notice. Search the publisher or platform support site for the game’s name and “server shutdown,” “end of service,” or “online services.” Record the effective date, named platforms, and exactly which services are ending.
  2. Check the offline requirements. Look for an official statement about an offline mode or campaign, and whether the game still requires an internet connection or server authentication to launch. If the notice is unclear, ask the publisher or platform support rather than assuming an offline mode will work.
  3. Check what happens to content you rely on. Confirm separately whether add-ons, saves, and locally stored or shared user-created content remain accessible. A shutdown can affect these differently from the campaign or multiplayer.
  4. Check access through your store or platform. If you may need to download or redownload the game, confirm what the store says about availability. A physical disc or a backed-up installation does not replace a server-side feature or authentication service the game still requires.
  5. If the notice is recent, check refund options promptly. Review the seller’s refund policy and any consumer advice that applies where you live; eligibility depends on the circumstances and local rules.

Can you get a refund if a game becomes unplayable?

There is no universal rule that every server shutdown entitles every purchaser to a refund. The seller’s policy, the game’s terms and disclosures, the timing and nature of the change, and local consumer law may all matter. Ubisoft’s The Crew notice, for example, directed recent purchasers to check the store’s refund policy; that was not a promise of an automatic refund.

What the EU position says

In its June 16, 2026 communication responding to the Stop Destroying Videogames European Citizens’ Initiative, the European Commission says EU consumer law does not set a universal minimum period for supplying digital games or require a game to be handed over in working form after commercial supply ends. It also says existing rules on pre-sale information, conformity with the contract, and remedies can apply. Discontinuation may constitute non-conformity if supply ends sooner than a consumer could reasonably expect, and a proportionate refund may be due in some circumstances. The assessment is individual; contract terms allowing termination may also receive case-by-case scrutiny for unfairness.

This is a conditional, fact-dependent framework, not a guarantee of indefinite support or an automatic refund. It applies to the EU discussion, not as a general statement of rights elsewhere; even within the EU, the result depends on the game, contract, disclosures, and circumstances. The Commission’s communication, C(2026) 4110 final, is the relevant source for its account of that framework.

Can a game be preserved after its servers close?

Sometimes a game can be adapted to work offline, use a self-hosted server, or support peer-to-peer play, but none is a universal fix. A game may rely on proprietary server infrastructure, authentication, anti-cheat systems, licensed assets, or other components that players do not receive with the purchase. Copying game files cannot recreate a service that was never included in the local installation.

Fan-run servers and emulators are game-specific. Before relying on one, check what it actually supports, whether it is safe to install, and the legal position where you live. In its June 2026 communication, the European Commission recorded industry concerns about cybersecurity, intellectual property, trade secrets, and the work required to re-engineer games, alongside consumer representatives’ emphasis on access and the possibility of removing some authentication-only requirements for single-player games. Those are stakeholder positions in a contested preservation debate, not proof that any particular workaround is available or lawful.

The Stop Killing Games campaign advocates against remotely disabling games without reasonable means of keeping them functional. That is the campaign’s policy position; the Commission communication is the source for the EU consumer-law framework described above.
