Your Steam purchase stays available when a game leaves Early Access, but your save and progress are not guaranteed to carry over. The developer decides whether the old save remains compatible, progress resets, or selected items and unlocks can be imported. Check the game’s own 1.0 announcement or FAQ for its specific instructions.
Your game access and your save are separate
Steam Support says players keep access to a purchased game when it moves from Early Access to fully released. That promise concerns access to the game, not compatibility of its save files. Steam Support’s Early Access FAQ also explains that developers decide when their games are ready to leave Early Access.

On Steam, moving to “Released” is a store-status change made when a developer considers the game feature-complete and no longer significantly changing. The status change does not itself determine what happens to saves. Steamworks asks developers to set expectations transparently, including when an update may break saves. In practice, only a statement about the particular game can tell you whether a reset or carryover is planned. Steamworks Early Access guidance

“Progress” can mean more than a save file
A game may treat different kinds of progress differently. A campaign or world save might not load in version 1.0, even if the developer offers a way to reclaim some currency or unlocks. Check separately for:

How developers have handled 1.0 transitions
These examples show different title-specific policies; neither is a general rule for Steam games.
Roboquest: a limited recovery option
After players criticized the loss of progress at version 1.0, Roboquest’s developers said they had not found a clean way to retain it at the time. A later 1.0.1 prompt could restore Wrenches spent and classes unlocked during Early Access from the remaining Early Access save. It did not restore gadgets or difficulty levels, and the developers cautioned that retrieval might fail if the save was not on the same computer. Roboquest developer announcement

Coral Island: incompatible saves, with some carryover
Stairway Games said Early Access saves would not be compatible with Coral Island’s 1.0 release. The developer offered a partial bridge: gold earned in Early Access could carry into New Game Plus, and purchased charity cosmetic DLC could be reclaimed. It warned players not to start a new 1.0 save and overwrite the old one before importing gold, because doing so would prevent the import. Stairway Games’ 1.0 FAQ

What to check before the transition
- Look for the latest official guidance. Check the game’s Steam news, Community Hub announcements, and official FAQ. Search for terms such as “save carry over,” “save reset,” “wipe,” “New Game Plus,” and “1.0.”
- Check what the developer means by carryover. A statement about currency or unlocks does not necessarily mean the old save file or world will work.
- Follow the procedure and timing exactly. Find out whether you need to import before starting a new game or avoid overwriting an old save.
- Keep any save the instructions rely on. If the process depends on a local Early Access save, a particular version, or a specific computer, preserve the required file and follow the developer’s stated steps.
- If there is no current statement, treat the outcome as unknown. The absence of an announcement does not establish either a wipe or a carryover.
