1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen a game is delisted from Steam, it is usually removed from sale rather than removed from existing owners’ libraries. Valve’s Steamworks guidance says, “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries.” Owners can normally download, install, and launch the game, although any online service or server-dependent feature may stop working separately.
The important distinction is whether the product was merely retired from sale or whether your entitlement was revoked. Those situations have different consequences for library access, reinstallation, and refunds.

What “delisted” means on Steam
Steam uses retirement (often called delisting) to describe taking a product out of sale. The store page can remain accessible, but Steam removes the game from normal store listings so new customers cannot purchase it. Retirement is therefore primarily a change to sales availability, not an automatic cancellation of licenses already attached to customer accounts.

Valve’s official retirement documentation states: “Retired games will remain in players’ Steam libraries.” In the ordinary case, an account that already owns the game keeps its library entry and can still download, install, and launch it. See Steamworks Documentation: Removing a product from Steam.

That policy does not promise that every part of a game will continue indefinitely. A title may rely on publisher-operated servers, authentication, matchmaking, or other online functions. Steam’s retirement process asks publishers to identify services that will become unavailable and to explain what players should expect. The practical result is game-specific: a delisted single-player game may remain fully playable, while an online-only game may become unusable even though its library entry remains.
Delisting versus losing the entitlement
Use the following comparison before assuming that a missing or unplayable game was simply delisted.
| Situation | Does it remain in the owner’s library? | Can it be downloaded or installed? | Can it be launched? | What about refunds? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retired from sale | Yes, for existing owners under Valve’s retirement guidance. | Normally yes. | Normally yes, subject to the game’s own technical and online requirements. | Normal Steam refund rules apply; retirement alone is not stated as an automatic refund trigger. |
| Online service shutdown | The library entry may remain. | Usually, if Steam still distributes the files. | Only to the extent that the game works without the closed servers or features. | Considered under the normal policy or a case-specific extension. |
| Revoked CD key | No: Steam says the revoked key is removed. | No entitlement remains through that key. | No, unless you obtain another valid entitlement. | Handled as a key-revocation issue, not ordinary delisting. |
| Revoked gift | No: a gift removed because of fraud or a payment dispute disappears from the recipient’s library. | No entitlement remains from that gift. | No, unless you obtain another copy. | Follow the gift-revocation information and notification from Steam. |
For the key and gift cases, consult Steam Support’s Revoked CD Keys and Revoked Gifts. A revoked entitlement is materially different from a publisher taking a product off the storefront.
Can you still play a delisted Steam game?
If you owned the game before it was retired, the ordinary answer is yes. The ownership record remains in your Steam library, and Valve’s stated retirement behavior preserves download, installation, and launch access. You do not need the game to remain publicly purchasable for Steam to recognize your existing license.

“Launch” should be read as access to the installed game, not as a guarantee that every mode works. A game may require a server that the publisher has closed, a service that no longer authenticates users, or a feature that depended on an external platform. Steam’s retirement documentation specifically addresses this possibility, so check the publisher’s announcement or the game’s support information for the status of required services.
What happens to the store page?
The page can remain reachable by direct link, but it is removed from store listings. That explains why a search of the store may not find a game even while the same title appears in your library. A missing search result is not, by itself, evidence that your ownership was removed.
How to reinstall a delisted game
Start from the library entry rather than the store. If the game is still listed on the account that owns it, Steam should provide the normal installation controls. Delisting does not require a separate installer or a new purchase.

- Sign in to the owning Steam account. If several accounts are used on the computer, verify the account name before troubleshooting anything else.
- Open the Library and look for the title. Remove restrictive library filters and check the Hidden Games area if it does not appear. Steam identifies account selection, filters, and hidden games as common reasons for an apparently missing title; see Games Are Missing from my Library.
- Start installation from the library entry. Steam can download the files even though the public store listing is gone, provided the entitlement remains on the account.
- Choose the intended Steam library location. If you use more than one drive, confirm that the selected library is available and has sufficient space.
- Let Steam complete its discovery and installation process. If files already exist, Steam may check them instead of downloading every file again.
There is no general rule that a delisted game must be backed up or manually installed. The decisive factor is whether Steam still shows an active entitlement and can obtain the game’s files.

If Steam says an installed game is uninstalled
A delisted title can remain on your drive while Steam loses track of its installation. Do not delete the existing folder first. Steam Support recommends checking that the game folder is inside the proper Steam library location, then initiating installation so Steam can recognize the files. Alternate library folders can be added through Steam’s Storage Manager. The step-by-step support reference is Installed games are appearing as uninstalled.
- Confirm that the folder containing the game is inside a Steam library folder that Steam currently recognizes.
- Open Steam’s storage-management controls and add the drive or library folder if it is missing.
- Use the game’s install command and select that existing library location.
- Allow Steam to scan or verify the files. If the files match the depot still available to your account, Steam can register the installation; otherwise it may need to download missing or changed data.
This procedure addresses file recognition. It cannot restore an entitlement that was revoked, and it cannot recreate servers or online features that a publisher has shut down.
Why a game may be missing from your library
Before concluding that delisting removed the game, work through Steam’s ordinary account and visibility causes:

- Library filters: Clear collection, platform, installed-only, or other restrictive filters that can hide a title.
- Hidden Games: Check Steam’s Hidden Games section and restore the title to the normal library view if it was hidden.
- Installation tracking: If the files are present but the library says “Install,” follow Steam’s installed-as-uninstalled procedure and verify the library folder.
Steam’s checklist for these cases is documented at Games Are Missing from my Library. If none of those explanations fits, the problem may be a revoked key or gift rather than a store delisting.

Will Steam refund a game that was delisted?
Delisting by itself does not create an automatic refund entitlement. Steamworks says that normal Steam refund rules apply to retired products, while Valve may extend the option in particular circumstances. The retirement guidance gives cancellation of a new game and promised content or features that were not delivered as examples. For free-to-play games, Valve may offer refunds where players did not receive the opportunity to obtain value from in-game purchases. Those are discretionary or case-specific situations, not a blanket promise for every delisted title.
The ordinary refund test
Steam’s stated standard is a request made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. The playtime calculation includes online play, offline play, and time played through Family Sharing. The current policy and request route are in Steam’s Common Refund Questions.
If you are outside either condition, you can still submit a request for review. Steam says it will consider the request, but review outside the stated rule is not a guaranteed exception. Explain what happened, including the delisting date if known, the features or services that are unavailable, and your purchase details.
How to submit a request
- Go to help.steampowered.com and sign in to the purchasing account.
- Select the relevant purchase from Steam Support’s help flow.
- Choose the refund option and provide an accurate explanation of the problem.
- Submit the request even if the purchase falls outside 14 days or two hours; Steam will decide whether the circumstances justify review.
How long an approved refund takes
Steam says an approved refund can take up to seven days to appear. If the refund is issued as Steam Wallet credit, it may appear within 24–48 hours. International payment methods can take longer. These are processing estimates from Steam Support, not a promise that every bank or payment provider will post the funds at the same speed.

When online features stop after delisting
Store availability and service availability are separate decisions. A publisher can retire sales while leaving servers running, or retire sales and later close the servers. The library entry may survive either way. Multiplayer matchmaking, account sign-in, leaderboards, cloud-dependent features, downloadable content delivery, or other functions can therefore have a different status from the base game’s Steam entitlement.
Steam’s retirement process asks publishers whether a product depends on servers or other functions that will become unavailable and instructs them to explain expected effects to users. Because the answer is title-specific, rely on the publisher’s announcement or support notice for the actual shutdown date and affected modes. Do not infer that a game is entirely playable—or entirely unplayable—from its delisted status alone.
A practical decision path
Use this sequence to identify the situation without confusing a visibility problem with a revoked license:
- Is the title in the correct account’s library? Check the account, filters, and Hidden Games.
- Is it listed but not installed? Start installation and select a recognized Steam library.
- Are the files present but marked uninstalled? Add the correct library folder through Storage Manager and let Steam recognize the existing files.
- Does the game install but fail online? Check whether the publisher has ended a required server or service; this is independent of storefront retirement.
- Has Steam removed the entry entirely? Investigate whether a CD key or gift was revoked. Those cases require a new valid entitlement, such as a Steam purchase, another valid key, or a replacement gift.
- Do you want money back? Submit a Steam Support request. Apply the 14-day and under-two-hour standard, while explaining any exceptional circumstances for review.
The bottom line for owners
A normal Steam delisting removes a game from sale, not from the libraries of people who already own it. Existing owners can generally keep downloading, installing, and launching the title. The two qualifications that matter most are that online services may have their own shutdown schedule, and a revoked key or gift is not ordinary delisting. Refunds follow Steam’s normal policy unless Valve chooses to extend them for a specific situation.
