Use a stable, descriptive DNS label such as web-prod-nyc-01 or api-01 for a Linux VPS. Keep it lowercase and limited to ASCII letters, digits and hyphens; avoid spaces, dots, underscores and leading or trailing hyphens. A 63-character ceiling keeps the name within the DNS label limit, even though Linux documents a 64-character hostname limit.

Use an FQDN such as web-01.example.com only when you control example.com and have created the matching DNS record. The guest operating system’s hostname and your provider’s reverse-DNS (PTR) setting are separate configuration tasks.

A VPS hostname should identify the machine without depending on a particular provider, IP address or temporary purpose. A practical pattern is:
<role>-<environment>-<location>-<sequence>
For example, web-prod-nyc-01 means the first production web server in New York. A smaller deployment might use api-01 or db-staging-01. This style makes shell prompts, log entries, monitoring alerts and incident notes easier to interpret when several servers are open at once.

Use a static hostname rather than one that changes with DHCP or another network-provided value. The systemd-hostnamed documentation says to “Generate a single DNS label only, not an FQDN.” It also recommends ASCII letters, digits and hyphens, avoiding repeated or edge hyphens, converting uppercase letters to lowercase and keeping the label to 63 characters.
What each part should mean
- Role: Use a short service function such as
web,api,db,cache,workerorvpn. - Environment: Add
prod,staging,devortestwhen the same role exists in multiple environments. - Location: Use a provider region or data-center code such as
nyc,amsorsgif location matters to operations. - Sequence: End with a zero-padded number, for example
01,02and03, so sorted lists remain in numerical order.
Do not encode details that change frequently, such as a billing plan, monthly price, kernel version or the current public IP address. Those belong in inventory or infrastructure-management data, not in a name that should remain stable.

For a portable Linux VPS name, use only lowercase a–z, digits 0–9 and hyphens. A label must not begin or end with a hyphen. Avoid consecutive hyphens even where a particular resolver might accept them, because stricter tools and automation can reject or normalize unusual names.
Do not use spaces, underscores, slashes, punctuation or emoji. The systemd documentation notes that non-ASCII characters may be accepted by some DNS systems but says it is “probably safer to not use any non-ASCII chars.” ASCII also avoids encoding differences in shell scripts, certificates, monitoring systems and provider APIs.
Keep the label at or below 63 characters. Debian’s hostnamectl manual and hostname manual describe a Linux hostname limit of 64 characters, while systemd’s DNS-label guidance uses 63. The shorter limit is the safer operational ceiling because a name that is valid to the kernel may still fail as a DNS label.

Short hostname or fully qualified domain name?
A short hostname is one DNS label, such as web-prod-nyc-01. An FQDN combines that label with a domain, such as web-prod-nyc-01.example.com. Neither is universally better; the right choice depends on whether the machine needs a publicly resolvable service name.

For a general-purpose VPS, set the operating-system hostname to the short label. If the machine serves a public website or API, create a DNS record such as web-01.example.com separately. Some cloud platforms document custom-hostname creation and explicitly treat DNS-record configuration as a separate step; see Google Cloud’s custom-hostname documentation for that distinction.

How Linux stores and reports the name
On systemd-based distributions, hostnamectl manages three related values:
- Static hostname: The persistent value normally stored in
/etc/hostname. This is the value you should set for a VPS. - Transient hostname: A temporary value supplied by network configuration or another runtime source. It can change when networking restarts.
- Pretty hostname: A human-facing descriptive name that may contain characters unsuitable for a DNS label. It is optional and should not be used as the machine’s interoperable network name.
A configured static hostname has priority over a transient value supplied by network configuration. The distinctions and precedence are described in the Debian hostnamectl manual and systemd’s systemd.network documentation.
Set the hostname safely with hostnamectl
Run these commands as a user with administrative privileges:

Choose and validate a short, lowercase label, for example
web-prod-nyc-01. Check that it is no longer than 63 characters and contains no spaces, dots or underscores. -
Set the persistent hostname:
sudo hostnamectl set-hostname web-prod-nyc-01 -
Inspect what systemd reports:
hostnamectl status -
Confirm the persistent file contains the intended value:
cat /etc/hostname -
Open a new shell or reconnect over SSH if the old prompt still shows the previous name. Existing processes can retain the old prompt until they start a new session.
hostnamectl set-hostname without a separate mode sets the static hostname. Do not use a pretty hostname as a workaround for invalid DNS syntax. If automation needs a machine identifier, read the static hostname and keep display labels in your inventory system.

Configure forward DNS for a public FQDN
Changing /etc/hostname does not publish a name on the internet. To use web-01.example.com publicly:

Ensure you control
example.comand have access to its authoritative DNS zone. -
Create an
Arecord for an IPv4 address, or anAAAArecord for an IPv6 address, pointingweb-01.example.comto the VPS address. -
Wait for the record’s TTL and resolver caches to update. A successful lookup from one network does not prove that every resolver has refreshed.

Configure applications, TLS certificates and monitoring to use the FQDN where required.
Keep the guest’s static hostname and the public DNS record conceptually separate. You may retain web-prod-nyc-01 inside Linux while assigning api.example.com as the customer-facing service name. This lets you move the service to another host without renaming every internal machine.
Reverse DNS and PTR records are a separate task
Forward DNS answers “which address belongs to this name?” Reverse DNS answers “which name belongs to this address?” The latter is represented by a PTR record and is normally controlled by the VPS provider that owns the IP range.

Changing the Linux hostname does not automatically change the PTR record. If mail delivery, security checks or an external integration requires reverse DNS, open the provider’s networking or IP settings, or use its API, and set the PTR value there. The provider may require that the target name already has a matching forward record. Verify both directions after the change.

Cloud and provider considerations
Providers can apply their own naming rules during provisioning. A control panel may ask for a hostname before the operating system boots, while cloud-init, DHCP or a network agent may later offer a transient name. Set the static value after first login and check it again after a reboot.
Some platforms require an RFC 1035-style name for a custom hostname. That requirement is compatible with the lowercase ASCII-and-hyphen convention, but it does not create the DNS record for you. Treat these as separate objects:

- Instance name: A provider-console identifier, which may have provider-specific rules.
- Guest static hostname: The Linux name returned by
hostnamectl. - Forward DNS name: A record in a domain you control.
- Reverse DNS name: A provider-managed PTR value for the IP address.
Keeping the four names documented prevents a common failure in which an operator changes one label and expects SSH banners, DNS lookups, certificates and reverse lookups to change together.
Naming patterns that scale

Pick one ordering and apply it consistently. Do not alternate between web-prod-nyc-01 and nyc-prod-web-1 without a documented reason. Consistency matters more than the exact abbreviations.
Troubleshoot a hostname that does not behave as expected
The name reverts after reboot
Run hostnamectl status and inspect /etc/hostname. If the static value is empty or different, set it again with sudo hostnamectl set-hostname .... If a provisioning agent or network manager keeps replacing it, change that system’s hostname setting or disable the conflicting automation.
SSH shows the old name
Existing shells cache the prompt. Disconnect and reconnect, or start a new login shell. Check the kernel’s current value with hostname and the persistent value with cat /etc/hostname before changing anything else.

The FQDN does not resolve
Confirm that the authoritative DNS zone contains the intended A or AAAA record, that it points to the current address and that the record has had time to propagate. A correct Linux hostname alone cannot make a public lookup succeed.
Reverse lookup returns the provider’s name
Set the PTR record through the provider’s reverse-DNS control, not with hostnamectl. Then verify that the PTR target has a matching forward record. Some providers restrict PTR changes on reserved, shared or newly allocated addresses.
A tool rejects the hostname
Check for uppercase letters, underscores, dots, non-ASCII characters, leading or trailing hyphens and a length above 63 characters. Replace the value with a simple DNS label and keep any longer descriptive text in inventory metadata.
A practical policy for your VPS fleet
Write the naming rule before creating the second server. Define allowed role and location abbreviations, whether environment is mandatory, how sequence numbers are allocated and who can rename a host. Store the provider instance ID, IP addresses, DNS records and PTR value alongside the hostname in inventory.
When a server changes purpose, decide whether the name should change with it. Renaming can make logs intuitive but may break certificates, monitoring filters, allowlists and automation. If stable identity is more important, retain a neutral name such as node-017 and represent the current role in labels or tags.
For most Linux VPS deployments, the resulting policy is simple: set a lowercase static label such as web-prod-nyc-01, keep it within 63 characters, publish an FQDN only through DNS you control, and configure reverse DNS separately through the IP provider.
