Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by reading the last console and log lines, then launch the server with every mod disabled. That two-step check usually separates a broken core installation from a bad mod. After that, verify the executable path, map argument and service WorkingDirectory, validate the installed files, check memory and disk space, and only then troubleshoot firewall, query ports or router forwarding. A server that exits before binding a port needs a software or resource fix; a server that stays running but is missing from the browser has a reachability or discovery problem.

Identify exactly how the server fails
“Won’t start” describes several different failures. Do not apply a networking fix to a process that crashes while loading a map, or delete saves when a service manager is simply starting from the wrong directory. Watch the console and classify the symptom before changing anything.

| The process exits immediately with no map or mod loading | Executable, launch command, permissions, missing dependency or service-path error | Run it interactively from the installation directory and capture the final console line |
| It reaches map or mod loading, then closes or crashes | Mod, map, corrupted file, driver, memory or storage problem | Retry with all mods disabled and compare the final log lines |

Inspect the service’s status and journal, then test the same command manually |
| The process remains running but the server is absent from the browser | Query port, firewall, router forwarding, address or server-list discovery | Test local reachability and each configured port separately |
| The host repeatedly restarts the process | Crash loop hiding the original error | Stop the restart policy temporarily and preserve the previous log and crash files |
The distinction matters because firewall and router rules cannot repair a binary that exits before it binds its ports. Conversely, reinstalling the server will not make a healthy process appear in a browser when its query port is blocked.
Capture the failure before restarting
Every restart can overwrite the evidence you need. Before trying another launch, preserve the console output, the final lines of the server log, the exact command or service definition, and any crash report created at that time. Record the date, installed build, map, mod list and whether the process was started manually or by a service manager.
#1 Best Overall
- Official ARK: Survival Evolved licensed merchandise, featuring the Dodo sculpted in textured iron
- Compact pin measuring about 1.6 in (4 cm) across and 0.5 in (1.2 cm) thick - light enough for caps, denim and tote bags
- Raised, textured surface gives the design real depth instead of a flat printed look
- Made in Japan - the pin back attaches securely and sits flat without dragging the fabric down
- A gift for ARK players, survival game fans, and dinosaur enthusiasts
- Stop automatic restarts. Pause a systemd, container or hosting-panel restart policy so one failure produces one readable log.
- Save the console output. Copy the first error and the last 30–100 lines, including warnings immediately before an exit.
- Record the launch context. Note the executable path, map argument, working directory, account, environment variables and enabled options such as
-automanagedmods. - Check crash artifacts. Preserve crash dumps, minidumps and timestamped logs before deleting or validating files.
- Write down what changed. An update, new mod, map switch, driver change, service-file edit or storage move narrows the search dramatically.
Do not treat a generic “server stopped” line as the cause. The actionable message is often earlier in the log: a module that failed to load, a path that could not be opened, an invalid argument, an out-of-memory event or a port-binding error.
Run the clean no-mod test
A clean launch is the fastest discriminator for ASA startup failures. Disable every mod, leave the intended map and basic server settings in place, and launch once. Do not uninstall mods or delete saves for this test; disabling them is reversible and preserves evidence.
If the clean server starts
The core binary, map and basic service path are probably functional. Restore mods in small groups rather than all at once.
- Make a list of the enabled mods and their IDs, including the order in which your deployment tool installs them.
- Enable a small group and launch. If it succeeds, stop the server cleanly and add the next group.
- When a group fails, split that group in half and repeat until one mod or a particular combination is identified.
- Check the suspect mod’s ASA release, server compatibility, dependencies and current version. A mod that worked on an earlier server build may fail after an update.
- Remove or roll back only the identified mod, then verify that the server can start repeatedly before changing anything else.
If the clean server also fails
Stop investigating mods. Work through the executable path, map argument, installation files, service configuration, host resources and operating-system prerequisites. A no-mod failure points to the server environment or core files, not to mod load order.
Check the ASA mod directory layout
Each ASA mod must be in the server’s expected ShooterGame/Mods/<mod-folder>/ location, with its .uplugin file directly inside the expected mod folder. An extra nested directory can make an apparently installed mod invisible or cause loading errors. Confirm that the folder name, mod ID and downloaded release agree with the server’s configuration. Automatic management with -automanagedmods still depends on a correct working directory and writable installation.
Do not copy an old mod directory over a newly installed one without checking its version. Keep a backup of the known-good configuration, but let the server download or install the exact release required by the current ASA build.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Verify the executable, map and service working directory
A manual launch and a service launch can use different paths, users and current directories. A command that works in a terminal may fail under systemd, a Windows service wrapper, a container or a managed panel because relative paths resolve somewhere else.
Test the command outside the service manager
- Locate the actual ASA server executable in the installation, rather than relying on a shortcut or an outdated path.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the server’s installation directory.
- Run the same executable and map argument used by the service, but without the automatic restart policy.
- Compare the interactive output with the service log. A difference usually identifies a path, permission, account or environment mismatch.
The map argument must name a map that is installed and supported by the current build. A typo, an old map name or a map available only through a missing dependency can stop startup during initialization. If the server was moved, update every path in the service definition, not just the visible shortcut.
Fix a systemd or Linux service path
Inspect the unit’s ExecStart, user, permissions and WorkingDirectory. The ARK dedicated-server documentation specifically notes that the “WorkingDirectory option is required to fix some issues.” Set it to the directory from which the server expects to find ShooterGame, configuration files and managed mods. Reload the unit after editing it, then start one controlled test and read the journal from that attempt.
A service running as a restricted account must be able to read the executable and game files, write logs and saves, and create or update mod files when automatic management is enabled. Correct ownership and permissions without making the entire host writable. On a container, check the mounted volume and its working directory; a path that exists on the host may not exist inside the container.

Check Windows service wrappers and scheduled tasks
Confirm that the service points to the current executable, starts under an account with access to the installation and uses the intended start-in directory. Quote paths containing spaces according to the wrapper’s syntax. Test the command interactively under the same account when possible; administrator-only testing can hide a permissions problem that the service still has.
Validate or reinstall the server files carefully
Use the distribution tool that installed the server to validate or reacquire files. Validation is preferable to deleting the whole installation because it is more reversible and leaves saves and configuration available for inspection. Back up saves, configuration and a copy of the last working launch definition first.

- Record the exact server build and the first error seen after the failure began.
- Back up saves, configuration files and the mod list to a separate location.
- Run the distribution tool’s file validation for the dedicated server installation.
- Launch once with mods disabled and the same map.
- If validation reports missing or corrupted files, allow it to reacquire them and repeat the clean test.
If the failure started immediately after an update, keep the build number and error together in your notes. Replacing files first can remove the evidence needed to distinguish an update regression from local corruption. A rollback is only appropriate when your distribution method supports a known compatible build and you have confirmed that the problem is tied to that update; do not mix binaries from unrelated releases.
Check operating-system prerequisites and host resources
Server startup can fail even when the files and command are correct if the host runs out of memory, storage or required system support. Check these independently; passing one does not prove the others.
| Check | Evidence and qualification | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Memory | Studio Wildcard’s 2023 Windows troubleshooting guidance lists 16 GB as minimum and 32 GB as recommended for the game client. A dedicated server, active players and mods can impose a different workload. | Measure available memory during startup, stop competing workloads and inspect the operating system’s out-of-memory events. |
| Storage | The same 2023 guidance lists 70 GB of available storage for the Windows game client; server updates, logs, backups and mods require additional headroom. | Check the volume containing the executable, saves, logs and mod cache. Leave room for an update to stage files. |
| Windows version and graphics stack | Studio Wildcard’s 2023 client guidance lists updated Windows 10/11 and DirectX 12. It also warns that “Outdated drivers are also a common reason ARK might crash.” | Install current operating-system updates and graphics drivers appropriate to the host. A client requirement is not a guarantee that every dedicated-server configuration is supported. |
| Windows Server certificates and TLS | Dedicated-server setup documentation calls out Windows Server TLS and certificate requirements. | Verify the server can establish the secure connections required by its installation and update tools; certificate errors can prevent downloads or managed mods. |
| Linux runtime | The ARK Official Community Wiki currently documents glibc 2.17 as a Linux dedicated-server requirement (page accessed 2026-10-15). | Check the host’s glibc version and distribution support before blaming the game files. Do not replace system libraries casually; use a compatible OS image or supported compatibility layer. |
Also check CPU saturation, process limits, file-descriptor limits on Linux, antivirus or endpoint quarantine, and virtual-machine memory reservations. If the process dies only when a large map or mod set loads, monitor memory at that moment rather than only at idle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate map, configuration and save problems
Once a no-mod launch and file validation have passed, test the map and saved state without destroying the original. Copy the save and configuration to a backup location, then use a temporary test instance or a newly named save where your setup permits it. If a fresh test starts while the production save does not, the failure is associated with that save or its configuration rather than the executable.
- Confirm the map argument matches the map installed on the server.
- Check recent configuration edits for malformed syntax, unsupported options or a value copied from a different ASA release.
- Restore the last known-good configuration in a controlled test instead of changing multiple settings at once.
- Keep the original save untouched until the cause is understood; deleting it is not a first-line repair.
A map or save test should be performed after the clean no-mod test, not before. Otherwise a mod that changes world data can be mistaken for a corrupted save.

When the server starts but is missing from the browser
If the console shows successful initialization and the process remains running, stop treating it as a startup crash. Test discovery and reachability in this order:
- Confirm listening ports. Check the configured game port, query port and optional RCON port on the host. Make sure no other process already owns them.
- Check the host firewall. Allow the required protocol and port on the machine running the server. Apply the rule to the correct network profile.
- Check router forwarding. Forward the configured game and query ports to the server host’s current internal address. A changed DHCP address can silently invalidate an old rule.
- Test from the same network. A local client or port check helps distinguish a server bind problem from an Internet routing problem.
- Test from outside the network. Use an external connection only after local listening and firewall rules are confirmed.
- Verify the address and filters. Check that the client uses the correct public address, port and platform filters, and allow time for server-list discovery.
RCON is optional and is not required for ordinary browser discovery. Do not open extra ports merely because a guide lists them; expose only the ports your configuration uses, and restrict administrative access where possible.
Firewall and router forwarding affect reachability and listing. They cannot make a process visible if it exits before binding its ports, so return to the console whenever the process is not actually running.
Read crash files and prevent restart loops
After each controlled attempt, compare the timestamped crash file with the final server-log line. A repeated identical crash at the same loading stage points toward the same asset, mod or dependency; a changing final line can indicate nondeterministic memory pressure or a race in automatic management.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Keep one log per attempt rather than allowing a restart policy to overwrite it.
- Note whether the crash occurs before or after mod downloads, map loading and port binding.
- Check free space after a crash; a full volume can prevent both logging and clean startup.
- Inspect memory use and operating-system event logs at the exact failure time.
- Re-enable automatic restarts only after one clean manual launch succeeds.
Repeatedly restarting without reading the preceding failure is counterproductive: it can overwrite the useful context, leave partial mod downloads and create a misleading series of secondary errors.
Choose a remedy by failure stage and reversibility
| Failure stage | Least-destructive remedy | Escalation | Operational burden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Immediate process exit | Capture output; verify executable, map argument, account and working directory | Validate or reacquire server files after backing up saves and configuration | Low to medium; path and permissions must remain correct |
| Crash during mod or map loading | Disable all mods, then restore in small groups; test a fresh save | Remove or roll back the identified mod or restore a known-good build | Medium; mod IDs, versions and dependencies require ongoing maintenance |
| Service launch failure | Run the command manually, correct ExecStart or service path and set WorkingDirectory |
Recreate the service definition only after preserving the old one and its logs | Medium; updates must keep the unit and permissions synchronized |
| Running but unreachable | Verify game/query ports, host firewall and local listening | Correct router forwarding, address changes and external access rules | Medium; networking changes are separate from server software repairs |
| Resource exhaustion | Free disk space, stop competing processes and measure memory during loading | Move to a larger or better-supported host after confirming the workload | Ongoing; updates, backups and mod caches consume capacity |
Self-hosting gives you control over files, service policy and network rules, but you must maintain updates, backups, firewall and router settings, operating-system prerequisites and mod deployment. A managed ARK host can be reasonable when you cannot maintain those tasks; it does not remove the need to diagnose incompatible mods, map arguments or a failed update, and you should confirm its ASA version and mod support before migrating.
Final pre-launch checklist
- The last console and server-log lines are saved for the failed attempt.
- The process was tested once with every mod disabled.
- Each mod has the expected ID and version, and its
.upluginsits directly in the expectedShooterGame/Mods/<mod-folder>/directory. - The executable path, map argument, account and service
WorkingDirectoryall point to the same installation. - Files were validated with the tool that installed the server, after saves and configuration were backed up.
- Memory, storage, drivers, operating-system updates, Windows Server TLS/certificates or Linux glibc 2.17 were checked as applicable.
- The configured game, query and optional RCON ports are free and permitted by the host firewall.
- Router forwarding targets the server’s current internal address.
- Crash files and timestamps were reviewed before enabling automatic restarts.
Following that order preserves the evidence, starts with reversible tests and keeps startup failures separate from browser-discovery failures. In most cases, the decisive clues are the final log line and the result of the clean no-mod launch.
