Force 4x MSAA is a graphics setting that enables multisample anti-aliasing in OpenGL ES 2.0 apps. It can smooth some jagged polygon edges, but it is not a general phone-speed boost, and Android does not promise that every game will use it or look better.
What Force 4x MSAA does
Android describes the Developer options setting as enabling multisample anti-aliasing (MSAA) in OpenGL ES 2.0 apps. It is grouped with hardware-accelerated rendering options. Its documented purpose is to affect graphics rendering—not to speed up Android as a whole. Android Developers explains the setting and its scope.
What “4x MSAA” means for game graphics
MSAA takes multiple samples at locations within a pixel for graphics primitives, then resolves those samples into a color for display. This can make jagged edges look smoother, especially along polygon silhouettes. The Khronos Group’s OpenGL ES 3.2 specification describes the sampling and resolving process and notes its value for polygon edges.
“4x” refers to the multisample setting; it does not mean the entire image is rendered at four times your screen’s resolution. MSAA targets edge aliasing, so it does not guarantee better textures, user-interface graphics, or every kind of visual artifact.

Will it work in every Android game?
No such guarantee is documented. Android specifies OpenGL ES 2.0 apps as the setting’s scope, so do not assume it affects a game using a different graphics API. Even within that scope, the Android documentation does not promise a visible change in every app. There is no current app-by-app or device-by-device compatibility list in the cited documentation.
Does it improve FPS or affect battery and heat?
Android’s documentation and the Khronos specification explain what MSAA does, but they do not provide game benchmarks or universal measurements for frame rate, battery use, or temperature. The setting is not documented as an FPS-boost feature. Any change in appearance or performance depends on the specific app and device; a fixed battery or heat cost cannot be stated from these sources.

How to decide whether to leave it on
If you want to check its effect in a particular game, compare the same scene with the setting off and on. Look for smoother polygon edges, then observe frame-rate smoothness and battery or temperature changes during the same workload. Treat those as device- and game-specific observations rather than results you can expect universally.
