“Hanzo main” is an Overwatch insult aimed at a player who mostly picks Hanzo. It usually implies that the player is stubborn about character choice, is not helping the team, or is getting kills by luck rather than skill. Those are stereotypes, not verified facts about any individual, and the phrase is also used as a joke.
What “main” means in Overwatch slang
In gaming slang, a “main” is the character a player chooses most often. Someone who mostly plays Hanzo, the archer hero in Overwatch, is a Hanzo main. Calling someone a Hanzo main turns a disagreement about a match into a jab at that player’s preferred hero.
The three accusations built into the insult
The insult works because it carries a bundle of assumptions. Community discussions point to three recurring ones:
- Stubbornness: the player refuses to switch heroes even when the team composition calls for it. A 2017 Mic explainer tied the insult to frustration with players who appeared unwilling to adapt to fit a team.
- Poor team contribution: the player is seen as not helping the team, sometimes labeled a “thrower” for playing a particular hero.
- Lucky kills: a Hanzo player’s eliminations are dismissed as chance rather than skill.
None of these is a measurement of a specific player. They are judgments embedded in the label. A 2020 post on the Blizzard Overwatch Forums describes one player’s account of Hanzo mains being ridiculed and called throwers simply for picking the character. That post is individual testimony, not an official Blizzard position, and it does not show how common such treatment is.

Where the phrase came from
The phrase became publicly visible in Overwatch’s early years. A March 17, 2017 Mic article discussed a viral school incident involving the insult and pointed to an earlier public meme reference. A 2020 Inverse retrospective described “Hanzo main” as an insult heard in Overwatch chat and traced the stereotype’s growth to the game’s early community.
The reason Hanzo acquired such a poor reputation is not clear-cut in these sources. The available coverage does not establish who first used the phrase or when, so it is safest to treat its origin as undocumented.

Teasing versus a hostile label
The same words can land very differently depending on tone and relationship. Context decides which one is happening:
- Friendly teasing: friends who play together trade the label as a running joke, often after a missed shot or a funny play.
- Hostile labeling: a stranger or a frustrated teammate uses the phrase to dismiss a player, assign blame for a loss, or justify insults.
A recent secondary explainer from May 12, 2026 from Position is Everything describes the phrase as context-dependent blame shorthand. It is a useful summary of how the term functions, but it is not a survey and does not measure how often either use occurs.

What is and is not established
Coverage of this slang is thin. No named survey or credible published statistic measures how often the phrase is used or what share of players use it. No named official or expert has given a formal definition of the term. That makes “Hanzo main” informal community slang without one fixed meaning. Its core sense, a player who mostly picks Hanzo, is stable, but the insult layered on top varies from group to group.
The reputation is a stereotype. It describes how some players talk about Hanzo mains, not what any particular player is like. A player who picks Hanzo often may be stubborn, unhelpful, or simply enjoys the hero. Only that player’s conduct in a specific match shows which.
