In precise fighting-game usage, the attack’s hitbox is the region that does the hitting, and a hit registers when that hitbox overlaps the target’s hurtbox. Because many players and some developers use “hitbox” loosely for either side of that interaction, the meaning depends partly on context.
How a hurtbox works
A game represents each character or target with one or more collision regions. These regions are invisible geometry, separate from the artwork the player sees. When an attack becomes active, it carries its own collision region, the hitbox. If that hitbox overlaps a target’s hurtbox, the game can register a hit, subject to its own rules for blocking, invulnerability, throws, and character state. Overlap is the basic connection test, not the only one.

In game-development terms, the two are commonly modeled as separate shapes or layers. The hitbox belongs to the attack, and the hurtbox belongs to the object that can be struck. A 2018 Game Developer tutorial on hitboxes and hurtboxes in Unity works through this split using simple shapes such as boxes and spheres as examples. Those shapes illustrate the idea; they are not a required format, and engines and individual games choose their own.

| Term | Precise fighting-game meaning | Who owns it |
|---|---|---|
| Hitbox | The region where an attack can make contact | The attack, while it is active |
| Hurtbox | The region where a character or object can be hit | The character or object being attacked |
The distinction explains a common frustration. A move can look like it reaches a target while its hitbox never overlaps the hurtbox, because the visible limb and the collision shape are different things. The reverse also happens: a character’s art may appear clear of an attack while a hurtbox they still occupy catches it. These are consequences of the geometry the game defines, not guarantees that apply to every title.

Specialized hurtboxes
Some games separate hurtboxes by the kind of attack they receive. The Fighting Game Glossary entry for hurtbox describes throw hurtboxes as a distinct region in some games, so a throw can test against that area rather than the ordinary hurtbox used for strikes. Whether a given game uses separate regions, and how many, varies by title.
Why the term is used loosely
Fighting-game communities often say “hitbox” when they mean the region that receives a hit. Action and shooter communities use the terms differently again. Epic Games’ Fortnite glossary uses “hitbox” for collision-boundary geometry and describes how damage is registered in that game, which is a game-specific usage rather than a universal definition. When precision matters, state which side of the interaction you mean and which game you are describing.

Can you see hurtboxes?
Usually not during normal play. Some training modes and external tools can display collision regions, and the Fighting Game Glossary notes that displayed hurtboxes may be drawn in different colors depending on the tool or mode. No single color is a standard, so check the on-screen legend of the specific game or tool you are using. The GameDesign.gg glossary entry on hitbox and hurtbox gives a general comparison of the two terms that is useful for building the mental model.

Practical takeaways
- A hurtbox is where a target can be hit; a hitbox is where an attack can connect.
- A hit depends on overlap plus the game’s own state rules, so overlap alone does not decide the outcome.
- Collision shapes do not have to match the character’s visible art.
- Throw regions can be separate from ordinary strike regions in some games.
- Check the specific game’s terminology and display options before drawing conclusions about a particular move.
