In video games, a meta build is a character, team, or loadout assembled from choices considered effective, powerful, or popular in the game’s current state. The term has no fixed content. What counts as a meta build depends on the game, the mode, and the point in time you ask about. The word also has an unrelated meaning in software development, which is covered near the end of this article.
The core definition
A Steam Community guide about Path of Exile 2 describes a “meta-driven (community) build” as one that follows or adapts builds regarded as efficient, powerful, or popular in the current game state. The same guide cautions that patch changes can shift how viable those setups are. It is one player-written explanation rather than an official definition from a game publisher, so read it as a working description, not a standard.

What a meta build can include
Because the term is tied to each game, the contents vary. Depending on the title, a meta build may involve:
- a character class, hero, or role
- items, gear, or equipment
- skills, spells, or abilities
- team composition, in games where players act together
Four qualifiers that make “meta” meaningful
A meta claim without context is hard to test. Before you act on one, pin down the following.

| Qualifier | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game | Which title is this about? | Systems and balance differ completely between games, so a setup from one game says nothing about another. |
| Mode | Is it solo, ranked, casual, or another queue? | The same character or team can perform differently under different rules. |
| Patch or date | Which version of the game was this written for? | Balance changes can make a formerly dominant setup weak, as the community guide notes. |
| Role or character | Which class, position, or hero does the build assume? | A build is only useful for the role it was designed to fill. |
Efficient, powerful, and popular are different claims
The community guide groups efficient, powerful, and popular setups under the same heading, but they answer different questions. A source that uses one of these words is not automatically making the others.
| Term | What it describes | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Efficient | How economically a setup reaches its goal, using the meaning the community guide gives the term | Whether most players use it, or whether it wins the most fights |
| Powerful | How strong the setup is in the situations where it is tested | Whether it is easy to execute, or whether it suits your play style |
| Popular | How many players choose the setup | Whether it performs better than less common alternatives |
What a 2017 League of Legends study measured
A 2017 paper by Choong-Soo Lee and Ivan Ramler analyzed League of Legends teams in specified regions and queue types. It defined a meta composition as one player for each of five roles, and it examined item and spell choices within each queue and region. This is one research definition for one game at one time. It shows what the term can mean in practice, not what it means across all games.

In that paper’s dataset, meta-style compositions accounted for 48.0% of North American Normal Blind teams and 72.8% of North American Ranked Team teams. These are historical, study-specific figures measured under the paper’s own definition. They are not current player statistics and should not be read as the share of meta teams in the game today.
The programming meaning of “meta-build”
In the Scala sbt documentation, “meta-build” refers to the build definition of a project, which is distinct from the project’s ordinary build. It has nothing to do with characters, teams, or loadouts. If your search came from a software context, that is the sense you need, and the sbt Reference Manual is the place to confirm its exact wording.

How to judge whether a build is meta for your situation
- Name the game, mode, and role. A build without these details cannot be checked against anything.
- Check the patch or date. Confirm the guide was written for the version you are playing, using the game’s patch notes to see what has changed since.
- Identify the metric. Establish whether the source is claiming efficiency, power, or popularity, and read its claim with that in mind.
- Look at the evidence window and population. Results from a narrow group of high-ranked players do not describe a typical player’s experience.
- Compare the requirements with your own setup. A top-listed build may demand specific gear, precise execution, or coordination with teammates that you do not have.
