PS5 error E2-00000000 appears when a game update or game installation fails, often with a “Something went wrong” message. It is not listed in PlayStation’s public error-code index, and Sony’s system-software instructions do not define it, so no official cause has been confirmed. The fix depends on which task failed. A failed PS5 system-software update has a documented Sony recovery path. A failed game update or disc installation has only third-party workarounds, and those are not Sony instructions.
What the code is and what it isn’t
The only specific reporting connecting E2-00000000 to PS5 game downloads is a GameRevolution guide by Sam Sant, published February 8, 2021, which describes the code appearing when players tried to download game updates. The article lists several affected games, but it does not describe a broad outage or a verified cause. Check the GameRevolution guide if you want the original reporting.

PlayStation’s official error-code index does not list E2-00000000 at the time of writing. Sony’s system-software instructions do not define it either. That means the code should not be read as proof of a hardware fault, and no official source in this review links it to a specific console defect. Treat it as a symptom label for a failed install or download, and work through the steps below to find which task is failing.
Identify which kind of failure you have
The two failure types need different responses. Mixing them up is the most common reason people try steps that do not apply to their problem.

If you are unsure which row fits, check the notification or download list first. A system-software update is a console-wide task, while a game update shows the game’s title.
Fixing a failed PS5 system-software update
Sony’s PS5 system-software update instructions are the official reference for this path. Start with a retry, and move to the USB method only if the download keeps failing.

Step 1: Retry the failed download
- Open Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the system-software update that failed.
- Select the option to view error information.
- Select Try again.
Step 2: Update from a USB drive if downloads keep failing
Sony directs users with repeated download failures to update using a PC or Mac and a USB drive. Before you start, confirm the following:

- A folder named PS5, with a subfolder named UPDATE inside it.
- The official update file saved as PS5UPDATE.PUP inside the UPDATE folder. Download it only from Sony’s page. Unofficial update files are not supported.
- About 1.1 GB of free space on the drive, according to Sony’s instructions. Check the current page, since the file and its requirements can change.
- Format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT on your PC or Mac.
- Create the PS5 folder at the top level of the drive, then create the UPDATE folder inside it.
- Download the official update file from Sony’s page and save it in the UPDATE folder as PS5UPDATE.PUP.
- Eject the drive safely, then connect it to the PS5.
- Start the console in Safe Mode, using the method shown on Sony’s page.
- Select Update System Software, then select Update from USB Storage Device.
- Leave the console on until the installation finishes. Sony states: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your console to be damaged.” Attribute this warning to PlayStation Support’s PS5 system-software update instructions.
Fixing a failed game update or disc installation
The steps below come from the GameRevolution guide, which reports them as workarounds. They are not Sony instructions, and they are not a guaranteed fix. The guide’s suggestion that the problem points to PS5 hardware is not supported by official evidence and should not be treated as fact.

Queued game update
- Resume and then pause the queued update.
- Restart the PS5.
- Retry the update.
Game installed from disc
- Delete the partial installation of the game.
- Install the disc while the console is offline.
- Reconnect to the internet.
- Check for the game update.
If the disc route is the only option, plan for a full reinstall of the game. Keep the disc and your account sign-in details available before you begin.
Reinstalling system software: a last resort
Sony separately describes reinstalling system software using a reinstallation file and Safe Mode. Sony’s page states that this deletes all data on the console, including saved games, so treat it as a recovery step rather than a first attempt. Move anything you need to keep before you start, and do not interrupt the process. Do not use reinstallation files or update data from unofficial sources.

When to contact PlayStation Support
If the official system-software steps fail, or if a game update keeps failing after the workarounds above, contact PlayStation Support for advice tied to your console and account. Sony’s published material does not link E2-00000000 to a specific hardware defect, so do not open the console or assume a repair is needed based on this code alone.
For quick reference, the verified path is: retry the system-software download, use Sony’s USB method if that fails, and contact Sony if the official steps do not resolve the problem.
