Insert it, download the game to the console or a compatible microSD Express card, then keep the Game-Key Card inserted to play. Nintendo says internet is needed for the initial download and first launch; after setup, the game can be played offline.
How a Game-Key Card works
- Insert the Game-Key Card into the Switch 2.
- Follow the HOME Menu instructions to download the game data. You need an internet connection and enough free storage. Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required to download the data.
- Launch and play with the card still inserted. After the initial download and launch, Nintendo says an internet connection is not needed for subsequent play.
Nintendo calls the card the “key” to downloading the full game data. Its support page lists system software version 20.1.1 or higher as required to play Game-Key Card software; because support requirements can change, check Nintendo’s current Game-Key Card instructions if setup fails.

Game-Key Card vs. a regular physical game card
| What to know | Regular game card | Game-Key Card |
|---|---|---|
| Where the game data is | Nintendo describes regular game cards as containing game data. | The full game data is not on the card; it downloads to console storage. |
| First-time setup | Requirements vary by title; Nintendo’s general description does not establish that every regular card has the same first-use requirements. | Requires an internet connection and enough free storage for the download. |
| Offline play | Do not assume every title works offline without updates or downloads; check its packaging or listing. | Nintendo says it can be played offline after initial setup, with the card inserted. |
| Lending | You can hand over the physical card. | You can hand over the card; the recipient downloads the game data and needs the card to play. |
The practical distinction is where the game data lives: a Game-Key Card is physical, but it is not a self-contained copy of the full game. Nintendo’s September 23, 2026 explainer states: “Game-key cards do not contain the full game data!”
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Storage: system memory or microSD Express
The downloaded data can be stored in the Switch 2’s system storage or on a compatible microSD Express card. Nintendo lists 256 GB of system storage, with some space reserved for system use; that figure is not all available for games. Nintendo’s Switch 2 FAQ says microSD Express cards can store software data, including downloaded software, and currently no individual games require extra storage space to play. An extra card is therefore optional, not a universal Game-Key Card requirement.
Use the microSD Express format specifically. A standard microSD card is not the compatibility type Nintendo identifies for Switch 2 game storage.

Can you lend a Game-Key Card or use it on another Switch 2?
Yes. Nintendo says Game-Key Cards are not tied to a Nintendo Account and can be lent by handing over the physical card. The other player inserts it and downloads the data to their own console; the card is still needed whenever they play. Nintendo UK notes that the first launch on another Switch 2 requires an internet connection and enough free space. See Nintendo UK’s Game-Key Card explainer for the lending details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Before buying or borrowing one
- Look for the Game-Key Card label so you know the full game data must be downloaded.
- Check the packaging or current digital listing for the title’s download size and make sure you have enough storage.
- Plan to keep the card available to play, even after downloading the game.
- If you borrow one, expect to download the data separately on your console.
Nintendo also advises against storing game cards next to magnets or magnetic objects for long periods, which can affect components and cause malfunction. Its game card care guidance has the handling advice.
