This guide focuses on Papaver somniferum, the breadseed or opium poppy: an annual grown for its flowers and seeds, and the plant whose latex is used to produce opium. Its culinary seeds and its alkaloid-bearing latex are different parts of the plant with different uses.
What is a poppy?
Papaver somniferum L. is an annual in the poppy family, Papaveraceae. Kew’s Plants of the World Online gives its native range as Macaronesia and the western and central Mediterranean. The common name “poppy” also applies to other species, so these details refer specifically to P. somniferum. Kew Plants of the World Online
The plant’s flowers vary in colour, and cultivated forms are grown ornamentally. After flowering, it produces a grey-green, spherical capsule topped by a flat, striped cap. As the capsule dries, it turns black-brown and contains hundreds or thousands of tiny seeds that may be black, brown or grey. Kew’s opium poppy profile
Are poppy seeds and opium from the same plant?
They can come from the same species, but they come from different parts of it. The seeds of P. somniferum are used as food; the plant’s latex contains alkaloids including morphine and codeine and is the source of opium. Culinary use of poppy seeds should not be confused with use of the plant’s latex or with medicines derived from opium. Kew; Cambridge University Botanic Garden
