The site said the removals followed its standing ban on mods about U.S. sociopolitical issues—not a rule aimed only at Trump. Its owner said the Biden version was removed alongside the Trump version after users reported it.
What the removed Marvel Rivals mods changed
The files were fan-made character replacements that put Trump or Biden’s head on Captain America. They were not official characters or content released by Marvel Rivals developer NetEase. Contemporary coverage described both removals as happening on January 2, 2025. PC Gamer reported the paired removals; Gizmodo also reported the files and the site’s explanation.

Why Nexus Mods took them down
Nexus Mods cited a policy it said had been in place since a Terms of Service update in 2020: the site would not host mods related to U.S. political or sociopolitical issues. In its January 2, 2025 moderation notice, NexusSiteBot said the site had imposed a “blanket ban” on such mods and had decided, after review, to extend that ban indefinitely. The notice also said the uploader was banned for re-uploading a previously removed file. Read the official moderation notice.
The stated rationale was the subject matter, not a judgment about whether either politician should appear in a game. Nexus Mods said it decides what files it hosts; that decision is separate from what a player might alter on their own installation.

Was the Biden mod removed too?
Yes. Nexus Mods owner Dark0ne said a report led moderators to the Trump file, after which users reported a Biden version that had been uploaded a few days earlier. That file was removed as well, and the owner said other reported Biden mods were subsequently taken down. The owner described the process as reactive: moderators may not act on material that has not been reported. The owner’s post gives the timeline.
That sequence explains why some users first saw news about the Trump removal and questioned whether the policy was being applied evenly. Nexus Mods’ owner said the paired removal was intended to avoid bias; contemporary reporting also noted that the site said Biden and Obama mods for Marvel Rivals had been removed. Gizmodo’s January 8, 2025 report covered that statement.

How the dispute escalated
Dark0ne said the site’s moderators and ownership faced abuse, including death threats, after the removals and accusations of selective enforcement. That is the owner’s account of the response; the public reports do not establish a verified count of threats. Criticism of a moderation decision and threats are not the same thing.

A file being removed from Nexus Mods does not by itself establish whether a player can modify a local game installation, and the site is not the authority on NetEase’s enforcement. In January 2025, PC Gamer reported that NetEase had told IGN players who modified Marvel Rivals installations risked being banned. That is a dated report, not confirmation of NetEase’s current 2026 enforcement policy. PC Gamer’s January 10, 2025 report discusses the warning.
