A room directory is a building sign or display that lists destinations and helps visitors identify which floor they are on. It is most useful at an entrance or near lifts and stairs, where people need to confirm a destination or decide where to go next. This guide covers physical building directories; the title does not establish a video-game or software meaning.
What a room directory does
A room directory helps visitors find out whether a destination is in the building and which floor it occupies. In a large, multi-level building, it is one part of the wayfinding system: additional directional signs may be needed to guide people from the directory to the destination. NHS Wales Specialist Estates Services guidance on directories describes this role.
Where to place a building directory
Place the directory where visitors arrive or make a route decision. NHS Wales recommends building entrances and locations outside lifts or near staircases. Leave enough clear space for people to stop and read without blocking circulation.
Make the directory’s own floor explicit. If visitors need to change floors, they must also be able to locate a lift or staircase. When neither is visible from the directory, add a directional sign pointing toward it.

How to organize its information
There is no single ordering scheme established for every building. Choose an arrangement that lets visitors scan the destinations and understand their location. When planning the layout, consider:
- Which decisions visitors need to make at that point in the building.
- How destinations are grouped and ordered.
- Whether the floor represented by the directory is unmistakable.
- How the directory connects to signs that guide visitors onward.
How a directory differs from a room-identification sign
A directory lists destinations; a permanent room-identification sign labels a particular room or space. The distinction matters for accessibility in the United States. The U.S. Access Board’s Chapter 7: Signs says building directories are exempt from the visual and tactile requirements it lists. It separately identifies room and floor numbers or letters, room names, and labels for permanent rooms and spaces as designations subject to visual and tactile requirements where provided.

This is U.S. ADA guidance, not a universal rule for every country or local code. For a permanent room label, a product search such as “room number sign with Braille” or “raised-character room sign” may help identify relevant options; check the sign’s features against the applicable requirements for its location and use.
