What Is a Sandbox Game? Definition, Types and Examples

A sandbox game lets players build, change the world, experiment with systems, or set their own goals. Here is how the term differs from open world, the main types, and what examples like Minecraft, Roblox, and The Sandbox really are.

A sandbox game is one that gives players substantial freedom to explore, build, change the world, experiment with its systems, or set their own goals rather than following a fixed route. The label is flexible. Many sandbox games also feature open-world exploration, survival, simulation, or action, and there is no single officially recognized list of sandbox subtypes.

The core test: what can the player actually do?

The most reliable way to decide whether a game is a sandbox is to ask what meaningful choices it offers beyond progressing along a predetermined path. Four questions help:

  • Does the game give players tools to build or customize the environment?
  • Can players experiment with the game’s systems and see how they respond?
  • Can players pursue goals of their own choosing, rather than only the ones the game assigns?
  • Can players shape the experience through their own creations?

A “yes” to one or more of these points toward sandbox design. Roblox Creator Hub defines its Sandbox genre as “Games providing players with tools and resources to build and customize an environment,” which captures the idea from the platform side.

Sandbox versus open world

The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different things. An open-world game describes the space: a large, traversable map where movement is largely unrestricted. A sandbox describes agency: what the player can do creatively with that space or its systems. The two can overlap completely, partly, or not at all.

#1 Best Overall
Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
Term What it describes Key question Example of the idea
Open world Space and freedom of movement Can I go almost anywhere? A large map with few locked areas
Sandbox Player agency and creative interaction Can I change, build, or experiment with the world and its systems? Building structures from gathered resources
Both Free movement plus creative interaction Can I roam freely and also shape what I find? Minecraft, which Mojang’s official site calls an “open world sandbox game”

A large map alone does not make a sandbox. A game with a vast world but scripted progression and little player-driven change belongs more naturally in the open-world category.

Common types of sandbox games

The following groupings are practical categories for readers, not an official classification. Many games fit more than one.

Building and crafting

Players gather or use resources to shape environments and create objects. Structures, tools, and landscapes emerge from the player’s choices rather than from a set level design. Minecraft is the clearest example. Its publisher also describes it as an action-adventure game with creative and building elements, so the genre label depends on which features you emphasize.

Life, city, and world simulation

These games let players arrange or manage systems, places, or simulated lives, with room to pursue their own objectives. The core activity is simulation, but the freedom to set goals and reshape the simulated world is what makes them sandbox-like. A city builder where the player decides what to construct and in what order is a sandbox in this sense, even though it is also a management game.

Open-world action with free-roam play

These games combine a main story or mission structure with the ability to explore and interact with the world outside the main route. Whether such a game counts as a sandbox depends on how much the player can change or systematically interact with the world. If free roaming is mainly a way to reach the next mission marker, it leans toward open-world design rather than sandbox play.

Creation platforms and user-made experiences

Some sandbox offerings are not single games at all but platforms where creators build the experiences. Roblox describes itself as a 3D creation platform for building, testing, and distributing creations, including games. The Sandbox documentation describes a platform for interactive 3D experiences, and its FAQ lists creator-made forms including adventure platformers, puzzles, galleries, horror games, board and card games, tower defense, and farming simulations.

Platforms versus individual games

When a reader asks for “a sandbox game example,” it helps to separate two things:

  • Individual games, such as Minecraft, are a single product with defined core systems.
  • Platforms, such as Roblox and The Sandbox, host or enable many experiences made by their communities. Roblox is not one game; it hosts a very large number of games and experiences. The Sandbox can refer both to the ecosystem and its creator tools and to particular experiences built within it.

Calling a platform “a sandbox game” is therefore imprecise. It is more accurate to say the platform supports sandbox-style creation and that individual experiences on it may or may not be sandboxes.

How to compare two sandbox games

When two games both claim the sandbox label, compare them on these axes rather than on the label alone:

  • Type of agency: building, simulating, exploring, or creating new experiences for others.
  • Structure and goal-setting: how much the game supplies goals, and how much players invent their own.
  • Environmental change: how much players can alter the world, and whether those changes persist.
  • Social shape: whether play is mainly solo, shared with others, or centered on creators building for an audience.

These axes are a practical framework drawn from official descriptions of the games above. They are not a formal industry standard, so two careful reviewers may place a borderline game differently.

Example to try: Minecraft

Minecraft is the most direct example of a sandbox game that is also open world. Mojang’s official site describes it as an open-world sandbox game, and the game is built around gathering resources, crafting, and constructing whatever the player imagines. Because the official Minecraft page states the game is updated several times a year, check the current version, supported platforms, and age rating before buying, since these change over time.

What to take away

  1. A sandbox game is defined by player agency: building, changing, experimenting, or setting one’s own goals.
  2. Open world and sandbox are overlapping terms, not synonyms. A game can be one, both, or neither.
  3. Minecraft is a well-documented example that blends sandbox play with action-adventure and survival elements.
  4. Roblox is a creation platform hosting many games, and The Sandbox provides tools and an ecosystem for interactive experiences. Neither is a single sandbox game.
  5. Classify games by what players can actually do, not by map size or by the label on the box.
