RPGs can be played around a table, acted out in person, or experienced on a computer, console or online world. Their rules may emphasize story, character growth, tactical combat, simulation or player freedom in different proportions.
What makes a game an RPG?
The recurring idea is that players create or inhabit characters and enact those characters in a fictional world, with rules or another structure shaping what happens. In a peer-reviewed chapter, José P. Zagal and Christoph Deterding describe RPGs as play activities and objects centered on the rule-structured creation and enactment of characters in a fictional world: “Definitions of Role-Playing Games”.
That definition is broad by design. RPGs do not all require dice, character levels, combat, quests, a game master or even a particular balance of storytelling and strategy. The form has no universally accepted boundary that classifies every borderline game. It is more useful to ask what role players take on, how their choices affect the fictional world, and how the game resolves those choices. Hitchens and Drachen discuss this variety in “The Many Faces of Role-Playing Games”.
What are the main types of RPGs?
The formats differ in who represents and governs the world, how players interact with it, and how rules handle actions and character development.

| Format | How play works | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Tabletop RPG (TTRPG) | Players describe what their characters do, often together around a table. Rules and sometimes a facilitator resolve uncertain outcomes. | Dungeons & Dragons |
| Live-action role-playing (LARP) | Participants physically perform characters’ actions in a shared setting, often using costumes, props or a represented environment. | Examples vary by event and system; the cited overview does not name a particular LARP. |
| Computer or console RPG (CRPG) | Software represents the world and applies the rules, allowing players to control characters through an interface. It may be designed for solo or multiplayer play. | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim |
| Massively multiplayer online RPG (MMORPG) | Many players interact in a shared online world, often with continuing social and character-progression systems. | World of Warcraft |
Dungeons & Dragons is a landmark tabletop example, not a template every RPG must follow. Tactical Studies Rules published it in 1974; its early form centered on players governing individual characters in an open-ended fictional world, with a referee presenting and governing events. The historical account appears in Zagal and Deterding’s chapter on RPG definitions. The official D&D introduction describes it as cooperative storytelling in which players take character roles and a Dungeon Master manages the narrative.
What do RPG labels in video games mean?
Labels such as “Western RPG,” “JRPG” and “action RPG” are useful shorthand for common design traditions, not a single binding or exhaustive classification. Games can blend these conventions with adventure, strategy, action or multiplayer features. Xbox Wire’s 2015 overview offers examples, but its descriptions are tendencies rather than strict rules.

| Label | Common convention | Example cited |
|---|---|---|
| Western RPG | Often offers substantial character creation and a broad sandbox; there are exceptions to that pattern. | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim; the overview also notes Mass Effect as an exception. |
| Japanese RPG (JRPG) | Often features more predefined characters and a guided story structure. The label reflects a tradition, not a mechanical rule based only on geography. | Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey |
| Action RPG | Combines role-playing or character-progression elements with real-time action. | Diablo |
| MMORPG | Places players in a large online world shared with many others. | World of Warcraft |
These categories overlap: a game may fit more than one, and RPG mechanics can appear in titles marketed primarily as another genre. The useful question is what role you play and how character choices or progression shape the experience. Xbox Wire’s examples and descriptions are in its 2015 RPG genre guide.
Are tabletop RPGs and video game RPGs both role-playing games?
Yes. Both involve players controlling or inhabiting characters in fictional worlds, but the medium changes how play works. In a tabletop game, participants describe actions and a human facilitator, shared rules or both determine outcomes. In a digital RPG, software presents the world and applies the rules, while the interface shapes the available choices. A LARP makes character action physical; an MMORPG adds a persistent shared digital setting and interaction among many players.

RPGs inherited ideas and terminology across these forms, but the experience is not identical. A computer may automate calculations that a tabletop group handles through discussion and rules, while a tabletop group can improvise actions beyond what a game’s programmed options allow. TechTarget’s overview discusses the term across tabletop and digital play in “What is a role-playing game?”.
How can you tell whether a game is an RPG?
There is no universal checklist, so consider how much the game centers on character roles and decisions rather than looking for one required mechanic. These questions help clarify what kind of role-playing it offers:

- ESCAPE THE DUNGEON, SOLVE THE MYSTERY: Dungeons and Dragons: Bedlam in Neverwinter offers all of the excitement of the beloved D and D game in one epic adventure, told in a 3-part escape room board game
- 3-IN-1 D and D COOPERATIVE MYSTERY GAME: Players join forces to investigate a series of alarming disappear-ances. Work together to track down clues and solve the mystery at the end of each act. For 2-6 players
- CREATE CHARACTERS, BATTLE MONSTERS: Choose a Race, Class, and Starting Weapon to create your character. Then collect loot and battle D and D monsters on the hunt for an evil mage and his dangerous cult
- SOLVE FANTASTICAL PUZZLES: Don’t split the party. Work together to decipher puzzles, from wordplay problems to multi-card visual riddles. Solve them to unlock new items, locations, and clues
- DYNAMIC GAMEBOARD: Players move their figures around the board exploring Neverwinter. The board builds and changes, revealing mysterious places and clues as players solve puzzles that unlock locations
- Who are you playing? Do you create or inhabit characters with a role in the fictional world?
- What do your choices change? Can character decisions shape events, relationships, approaches to challenges or the character’s development?
- How does the world respond? Are outcomes governed by a human facilitator, shared rules, software or a combination?
- What is emphasized? The game may focus on story, exploration, tactical combat, simulation or progression—or combine several.
Levels, quests, combat and character customization are common in many video game RPGs, but none alone defines the whole form. A game can also sit near the boundary between genres; its marketing label may reflect a blend rather than settle a universal classification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What do you need to start playing?
It depends on the format. For a tabletop RPG, you need a game’s rules and a way for participants to play their characters; some games use dice, while others resolve actions in different ways. The official Dungeons & Dragons introduction points new players to its Basic Rules and dice, but those materials are not requirements for every RPG. A beginner set can be a practical entry point for a tabletop game, not a prerequisite for understanding or playing RPGs generally.

- THE ADULT VERSION OF CLUE YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR: Lie to your friends, get away with murder! The Clue Conspiracy game is a secret role strategy game of shifting suspicions—with a party vibe! Ages 14+. For 4-10 players
- AN ISLAND SETTING, A NEW VICTIM: You're invited to the tropical Black Adder Resort, where a guest (maybe even you!) is trying to murder its manager, Mr. Coral. Deadly traps are spread throughout the resort grounds—and someone is armed
- PLAY ON SECRET TEAMS: Players play as Clue characters and take on secret roles on opposing teams: Friends vs. the Conspiracy. Friends try to keep Mr. Coral alive, while Conspiracy members secretly try to set up his murder
- WHO CAN YOU TRUST?: Lie, bluff, sabotage! In this mystery game, it's all about mind games as players conspire, gather clues, share info (or not), and call each other out to stop the other side
- MULTIPLE WAYS TO WIN: The Conspiracy wins by pulling off the murder Plot at a specific location or secretly sabotaging and setting off traps. The Friends win by disarming all the traps, or if that fails, solving the WHO, WHERE, and WHAT of the secret Plot
For a computer or console RPG, the game itself supplies the rules and world representation through software. Online RPGs additionally require access to the shared digital environment. You do not need tabletop equipment to play a digital RPG, and a digital game’s progression system is not a universal model for tabletop play.
