“System 32 error” is not a single Windows diagnosis. It may mean decimal error code 32 (hexadecimal 0x20), a startup-repair failure mentioning WindowsSystem32LogfilesSrtSrtTrail.txt, a missing or damaged protected file, or a DLL “bad image” message such as MSVCP120.dll. The complete message, code, file path, Windows version, and recent change determine the correct fix. Do not delete anything from C:WindowsSystem32 or download a replacement DLL until you identify which case you have.
What “System32 error” actually means
C:WindowsSystem32 is a Windows system folder containing protected components and many executable and dynamic-link-library files. Windows does not publish one universal “System32 error.” The phrase is commonly used as shorthand for several unrelated failures.

If the screen shows numeric code 32, Microsoft’s Win32 documentation defines decimal 32 (hexadecimal 0x20) as ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION: “The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.” That is a file-access conflict, not proof that the System32 folder is missing.

A message naming SrtTrail.txt, a missing DLL, or a status such as 0xc000012f points to a different diagnostic path. Treat the wording as a clue, not a diagnosis.

Record the evidence before changing Windows
Write down the complete dialog, blue-screen text, or recovery-screen message. If it disappears during reboot, take a photograph. Capture these details:
- The exact numeric code, including whether it is written in decimal or hexadecimal (for example,
32or0x20). - The complete file path and filename, such as
WindowsSystem32LogfilesSrtSrtTrail.txtor a named DLL. - Your Windows edition and version.
- Whether Windows reaches the desktop, starts only in recovery, or will not boot.
- What changed immediately beforehand: an update, driver installation, application install, forced shutdown, disk move, or connection of an external drive.
This record prevents a common mistake: applying a DLL fix to a sharing violation, or rebuilding boot files when the real problem is an application component.
Match the symptom to the right repair path
| What you see | Most relevant interpretation | Start here | Data-risk level |
|---|---|---|---|
Code 32 or 0x20 says a file is in use |
Another process holds the file open | Close the suspected program, restart, and identify the conflicting process | Usually low if you avoid force-deleting the file |
Startup Repair cites SrtTrail.txt |
Automatic repair could not complete; the log records a startup failure | Use Windows Recovery Environment, then offline integrity and image checks | Back up data before invasive recovery work |
| A named System32 file is missing or corrupt while Windows still starts | A protected Windows file may be damaged | Run elevated sfc /scannow |
Low; SFC is designed to replace incorrect protected files when possible |
| SFC cannot repair files or the component store is damaged | The Windows image may need servicing | Run DISM health checks and, where appropriate, /RestoreHealth |
Moderate; use a valid repair source and keep backups |
A DLL “bad image” message names a file such as MSVCP120.dll |
An application or runtime dependency is invalid or incompatible | Identify the application and repair or reinstall it; do not use a random DLL download | Varies by application and data |
| External-drive folders changed to shortcuts or files are inaccessible | Possible malware or storage failure, not a routine System32 repair | Protect the data and seek malware/storage or professional recovery help before destructive actions | High if you format or overwrite the drive |
Fix a decimal 32 (0x20) sharing violation
Code 32 means the requested file is being used by another process. It does not, by itself, mean that Windows has lost System32.
- Read the entire message. Identify the exact file and the operation that failed. A filename outside System32 may indicate an application or document lock.
- Close likely users of the file. Exit the application named in the message and any related editor, installer, backup job, or synchronization process. Save work first.
- Retry after a normal restart. Restarting releases ordinary file handles. Reproduce the action once Windows has returned to the desktop.
- Do not force-delete a locked system file. Deleting or renaming files in
C:WindowsSystem32can make Windows or applications unbootable. If the conflict returns, document the filename and the program that triggers it. - Use Safe Mode only as a diagnostic comparison. If the action succeeds there, a startup application or service is a likely participant. Restore normal startup and disable changes one at a time rather than removing system files.
The Microsoft wording is precise: “The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.” The remedy is therefore to resolve the file-sharing conflict, not to replace every file in System32.

Run System File Checker when a protected file may be damaged
When Windows still reaches the desktop and the message names a missing or corrupt protected component, Microsoft’s supported first check is System File Checker (SFC). Microsoft describes the command as one that “Scans and verifies the integrity of all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct versions.”
- Open the Start menu and type Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator. An elevated window is required; your account must have administrator membership.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows and test the action that produced the error. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. Keep the exact result; it determines whether DISM or a more targeted application repair is appropriate.
SFC is a protected-file check. It is not a general cure for every startup failure, an application’s private DLL, a failing drive, or a file that another process merely has open.
Use DISM when the Windows image or component store is involved
Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) is the broader Windows-image repair path. Microsoft documents three useful checks:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealthperforms a quick check for a recorded corruption state.DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealthperforms a more extensive scan of the component store.DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthattempts to repair the image.
Run these in an elevated Command Prompt while Windows is running. A practical sequence after SFC reports unrepaired files is:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
The final SFC pass checks protected files after the image repair. DISM can use Windows Update as a repair source when available. Microsoft also documents controlled repair sources with /Source and the option to prevent contact with Windows Update by adding /LimitAccess. Use a source that matches the installed Windows image; an arbitrary or mismatched source can fail.
If Windows will not boot: work from Windows Recovery Environment
Repeated startup repair, a blue screen before sign-in, or a message that Windows cannot load requires offline servicing. Enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) from the recovery screen or compatible Windows installation media, then open Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Command Prompt.
Recovery often assigns Windows a different drive letter. Do not assume it is C:. At the prompt, inspect available volumes and locate the one containing the Windows directory. In the examples below, replace D: with the confirmed letter.

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=D: /offwindir=D:Windows
For an offline image, the corresponding DISM form is:
dism /image:D: /cleanup-image /scanhealth
dism /image:D: /cleanup-image /restorehealth
If the image requires installation media or another valid source, use DISM’s documented /Source option and add /LimitAccess when you intentionally want to avoid Windows Update. Confirm every path before pressing Enter. When repairs finish, restart and check whether the original message returns.
If important files are not backed up, prioritize copying or recovering them before repeated repair attempts, resets, or reinstalls. A professional can help when the disk is failing, files are inaccessible, or the offline commands report hardware-related errors.

Use WinRE to run offline SFC and DISM with the verified Windows drive letter. If those checks do not resolve the boot failure, preserve the log, note recent updates or hardware changes, and consider backup, System Restore, uninstalling a recent update from WinRE, or qualified repair. Avoid random boot-file replacement commands when you have not identified the damaged component.
Handle a DLL or “bad image” error safely
A message naming a DLL such as MSVCP120.dll can arise when an application’s dependency is missing, corrupted, or incompatible. First record which program displays the message and whether Windows itself starts normally.
- If only one application fails, use that application’s built-in repair or its official installer, then restart and test.
- If SFC identifies a protected Windows file, let SFC repair it rather than replacing it manually.
- If the message appears during startup for several programs, run the protected-file and image checks described above.
- Do not download a DLL from an unverified “DLL fixer” site, copy one from another computer, or delete the named file from System32. Version, architecture, and digital-signature mismatches can create additional failures.
When an external drive shows shortcuts or inaccessible data
If the “System32” wording appears alongside an external drive whose folders have become shortcuts, or files suddenly cannot be opened, treat it as a data-protection incident. The symptom can involve malware or storage failure and is not solved by replacing a Windows DLL.
- Stop writing new data to the affected drive.
- Disconnect it if continued activity could worsen a failing device.
- Protect irreplaceable files before formatting, repartitioning, or running destructive repair utilities.
- Use qualified malware, storage, or professional data-recovery assistance when files are inaccessible.
What not to do
- Do not interpret the words “System32 error” as proof that the System32 folder is missing.
- Do not delete, rename, or take ownership of random files in
C:WindowsSystem32. - Do not use a replacement DLL whose version and source you cannot verify.
- Do not run a reset or reinstall before protecting important data when the drive may be failing.
- Do not repeat the same command indefinitely; preserve its output and move to the next diagnostic branch.
When to stop troubleshooting
Seek professional help after protecting data if Windows remains unbootable after offline checks, the drive reports read/write errors, files are inaccessible, or the message returns with different files. Bring the exact text, code, file path, Windows version, SFC/DISM results, and a timeline of recent changes. That information is more useful than simply reporting “System32 is broken.”
