A top-down game presents its action from above, giving the player an overhead or bird’s-eye view of the play area. The term describes the game’s viewpoint—not its genre, rules, or mechanics—so top-down games can include shooters, adventures, and other types of games.
What does “top-down” mean in a video game?
In a top-down game, the camera looks down on the action from above. Unity’s 2D game perspectives reference defines the view as overhead or bird’s-eye. The player sees the play area from that elevated perspective rather than from the side or at character eye level.

“Top-down” identifies how the game presents its world. It does not tell you what the player does, how the game is controlled, or what genre it belongs to.
Is top-down a genre?
No. It is a viewpoint label that can apply across genres. The EBU game-perspective vocabulary, for example, uses the term in connection with both shooter and adventure games. A game can therefore be described by both its genre and its perspective: a top-down shooter or a top-down adventure, for instance.

How is top-down different from isometric or 2.5D?
These labels describe related elevated views, but they are not interchangeable. Unity separates top-down from isometric and 2.5D (also called three-quarter) perspectives. Its reference describes 2.5D as simulating 3D geometry and a depth axis while presenting a bird’s-eye view.
| Perspective label | What the player sees |
|---|---|
| Top-down | The action from overhead or directly above. |
| Isometric or 2.5D (three-quarter) | An elevated, angled view that simulates depth. |
| Side-on | The scene from the side, often with characters moving across the screen as the scene scrolls. |
When the precise angle matters, describe what the camera shows rather than relying on labels alone. A particular game may present a view that is angled or includes depth cues even when a broad description calls it top-down.

Does “top-down” imply a specific camera or game design?
No single implementation follows from the label. It names the presentation, not a required camera setup or set of mechanics. For example, Unreal Engine documentation describes a project template named “Top Down”; its Strategy variant creates an isometric view with an orthographic camera. That is an engine-specific template detail, not a universal definition of top-down games.
Some games also let players switch between perspectives. IAB UK’s glossary defines player perspective as the in-game perspective and notes that a title can offer more than one. The view can therefore be a feature of a game rather than a label that describes every moment of play.

How to compare two top-down games
To understand how two games use the label, separate what their cameras show from how they play:
- Compare the camera angle: Is the view directly overhead, or is it tilted to show depth?
- Compare the visible area: How much of the surrounding play area can the player see?
- Compare genre and mechanics separately: The perspective alone does not establish whether the game is a shooter, adventure, strategy game, or something else.
The term by itself does not guarantee better navigation, aiming, or performance. Those qualities depend on the individual game and cannot be inferred from its viewpoint alone.
