PlayStation (often abbreviated PS) is Sony’s family of video game consoles, games, and connected gaming services, all run by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). The name began as the brand of the original 1994 console and now covers the PS5 family, the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Plus, PS VR2, and the first-party studios that make games for the platform.
What PlayStation means
PlayStation is a brand and an ecosystem rather than a single product. Sony describes Sony Interactive Entertainment as the company behind a global line of gaming hardware, network services, and games, and notes that SIE is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation. When people say “PlayStation,” they may mean the console in their living room, the online store that sells its games, the subscription that unlocks online play, or the studios that develop first-party titles.

The ecosystem breaks into five parts:
- Hardware: the PlayStation 5 family, including PS5 and PS5 Pro, plus the PS VR2 headset.
- Controllers and accessories: the DualSense wireless controller and other peripherals.
- Games: PlayStation Studios titles and third-party releases.
- Digital storefront and subscriptions: the PlayStation Store and PlayStation Plus.
- Studios: PlayStation Studios, Sony’s development group, which makes games for PlayStation consoles and, more recently, PC.
Where PlayStation came from
Sony dates the original PlayStation’s Japanese launch to December 3, 1994, and its arrival in other regions to 1995. Its own history page gives these dates:

The original console’s design
The first PlayStation used a 32-bit R3000 CPU and played games on CD-ROM. Sony’s retrospective says CD-ROM gave developers more room than cartridge alternatives, which made larger titles such as Final Fantasy VII practical, and that the console helped move home games toward more complex real-time 3D worlds.

Sony’s history page also lists some hardware figures: a maximum color depth of 16,700,000 and up to 360,000 polygons per second. These are Sony’s own historical specifications, not independently measured results, and they describe the 1994 hardware rather than any current model.
Sales of the original console
Sony’s official history page cites over 102,000,000 consoles sold worldwide during 1994 to 2006. Read it as Sony’s published figure for that historical period, not as a current installed-base count for the brand.
The start-up sound
The history page includes a remark from original start-up composer Takafumi Fujisawa, speaking to the PlayStation Blog: “I expressed the excitement to the game that begins after this sound by starting the music quietly in order not to scare the user when they turn the power on and follow it with the sound quality that sounds original and also welcoming.”
What PlayStation includes today
Sony’s current corporate materials center the brand on PlayStation 5, which the company describes as its current flagship hardware and which launched in 2020. Sony highlights the console’s SSD and Tempest 3D AudioTech as key technologies.

PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro
Sony’s US storefront presents the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro. Configurations, regional availability, and pricing change over time, so check the official regional PlayStation site before you buy. The PS5 Pro is a higher-end model within the same family; the official pages present the two as variants of one platform rather than as separate ecosystems.
DualSense controller and PS VR2
Every PS5 ships with a DualSense wireless controller, which supports haptic feedback and trigger effects in compatible games. A second controller is optional, not a requirement for playing alone.
PS VR2 is a virtual reality headset that Sony describes as companion hardware for PS5. It is an accessory for a subset of games, not a standalone console.

Games
PlayStation’s game library combines first-party titles from PlayStation Studios with third-party releases. Sony’s materials point to games for PS4, PS5, and PS VR2, and some franchises appear on more than one generation or on PC. Availability differs by title, so confirm the platform and format for any game before you buy.

The PlayStation Store is Sony’s digital storefront for downloadable PlayStation games. Sony says you can access it on the console, on the web, and through the PlayStation App.
PlayStation Plus
PlayStation Plus is Sony’s paid subscription. It provides online multiplayer and member benefits. The current US site describes three tiers:
- Essential: the entry tier, centered on online multiplayer and member benefits.
- Extra: adds access to a larger game catalog.
- Premium: adds a game catalog plus benefits such as classic games, game trials, and cloud streaming.
Catalogs, benefits, fees, and regional terms change, so use Sony’s current US or regional page for the exact contents of each tier.

Franchises that show how the platform works
Sony’s official pages name Horizon, God of War, The Last of Us, Gran Turismo, and Uncharted as key franchises. They make useful examples of how the brand spans generations:
- Gran Turismo debuted on the original PlayStation.
- The Last of Us appeared on PS3, with later entries or remasters on PS4, PS5, and PC.
- Horizon has releases on PS4, PS5, and PS VR2.
These are illustrations, not a complete list of PlayStation games, and they do not mean every entry is exclusive to the brand. Sony’s own pages show that these franchises can be bought on more than one console or PC.
How to decide what you need
Work through these questions in order:
- Which console? Choose between PS5 and PS5 Pro based on the current model comparison on Sony’s official regional site.
- Digital or disc? Physical and digital formats differ by title. Check the store listing for the game you want.
- Which games? Confirm each title’s platforms, since some franchises are PC or PS4 releases only.
- Do you need PlayStation Plus? Online multiplayer requires a subscription in many cases. If you want the game catalog or cloud streaming, compare the tiers above against your play habits.
- Do you want VR? Only buy PS VR2 if you want the specific games it supports.
What to verify before you buy
The details above reflect Sony’s own materials as of 2026. Hardware lineups, subscription contents, prices, and regional availability change, and they vary by country. Sony’s official pages are the authoritative source for current specifics. The historical specifications and sales figures come from Sony’s retrospective history, not from independent testing.
