An NPC is a non-player character: a character in a game controlled by the game or Game Master, rather than by a player. Online, calling a real person an “NPC” is figurative slang that can suggest they seem scripted or unoriginal—and may be insulting.
What does NPC stand for?
NPC stands for non-player character. Oxford defines it as “a video game character that is not controlled by a player of the game.” Epic Games’ Fortnite glossary gives a broader wording: “any character in a game that is not controlled by a player.”
The defining feature is who controls the character, not what the character looks like or does. An NPC can be a minor background figure or someone with a significant role in the game.
Who controls an NPC?
The distinction depends on the kind of game:
| Game format | Who controls the NPC? | How that differs from a player character |
|---|---|---|
| Video game | The game system controls it. | A player controls their own character. |
| Tabletop role-playing game | The Game Master controls or portrays it. | Each player controls their player character. |
Dictionary.com recognizes the term in both tabletop role-playing games and video games. The precise way an NPC behaves varies by game; the control distinction is what makes the character a non-player character.

What do NPCs do in games?
NPCs can fill different roles in a game world. Depending on the game, a player may encounter them, talk with them, get information, buy goods, or interact with them in other ways. Some can help with progress; others may be hostile or have little interaction available. PlayStation’s glossary describes NPC encounters and interactions, including talking and buying goods.
So NPC does not automatically mean “friendly shopkeeper,” “background character,” or “character with scripted dialogue.” It simply identifies a character that the player does not control.

What does NPC mean when said about a person?
In online slang, calling someone an NPC borrows the gaming term as a metaphor. It suggests that the person seems automatic, predictable, or unoriginal, as if they were following a script. Digital Trends describes this figurative use; it is a judgment by the speaker, not a literal or factual description of the person.
The term can be teasing, but it can also be dismissive or insulting because it reduces a real person to a stereotype of a game character. Context and tone matter.
