The school translates its Latin name as “art of fencing” or “art of combat.” Its stated approach draws on European fencing methods from the Renaissance through 19th-century classical fencing, with a curriculum centered on four weapons from the latter period.
What does Ars Dimicatoria teach?
Ars Dimicatoria describes its teaching as grounded in original period methodology from European fencing schools, spanning the Renaissance through 19th-century classical fencing. The school says its published curriculum foundation is fencing with weapons from the second half of the 19th century.
| Curriculum category | Weapons listed by the school |
|---|---|
| Core foundation | French foil, duelling sword, Italian military sabre and bayonet |
| Options for more advanced pupils | French smallsword, Polish sabre and Spanish rapier |
The school says its method combines practical and theoretical experience from current fencing masters with historical fencing publications in Czech, French, Italian, Spanish, English and German. It also highlights strategic and tactical thinking and whole-body training. These are the school’s descriptions of its approach, not independent assessments of teaching results. Read Ars Dimicatoria’s methodology statement.
Who are the fencing masters?
The school names Josef Šolc, Leonid Křížek, Michal Kostka and Michael Kňažko as its fencing masters. Its page places their involvement in fencing across decades ranging from the 1940s through the 1980s. See the school’s fencing masters page.
