What Is Aternos? Free Minecraft Server Hosting Explained

Aternos is free Minecraft server hosting for Java and Bedrock, but it is not 24/7 or unlimited. Here is how the service works and when it is worth using.

Aternos is a free, on-demand Minecraft server hosting service. It lets you create and manage a multiplayer server from a web browser instead of running the server software on your own computer. You can choose Java or Bedrock server setups and install supported server software, plugins, mods, modpacks, datapacks, and add-ons.

The important catch is that Aternos is not an always-online premium server. It is funded by advertising and shared among users, so servers may enter a queue, stop when empty, restrict arbitrary file uploads, and eventually be deleted after a long period of inactivity.

What does Aternos do?

Aternos hosts the multiplayer server; each player still needs a legitimate, compatible Minecraft client and the correct connection details. It is not a Minecraft launcher, Minecraft account, local single-player world, VPN, or LAN-sharing tool.

Through the Aternos control panel, a server owner can start or stop the server, select supported server software, change settings, manage players, install available mods or plugins, and share the displayed server address with friends.

Sandisk 2TB Extreme Portable SSD, Up to 1050MB/s, USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 2, IP65 Water and Dust Resistance, Updated Firmware, External Solid State Drive, SDSSDE61-2T00-G25
  • Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
  • Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
  • Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
  • Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C

Aternos is operated by Aternos GmbH, which says its free service is financed exclusively through advertising. The company reported more than 125 million registered users as of August 18, 2026; that figure is company-reported rather than independently audited in the available material. Aternos GmbH

Why is Aternos free?

Aternos keeps hosting free by combining advertising with shared, on-demand capacity. Empty servers are stopped instead of consuming resources indefinitely, and users may wait in a queue when demand is high. Restrictions on arbitrary server-file uploads also help limit abuse, malicious files, and attempts to bypass the automatic shutdown system.

So “free” means no hosting fee, not unlimited hosting. The trade-off is advertising, variable availability, less low-level control, and the need to start the server when your group wants to play.

Java Edition, Bedrock Edition, and crossplay

Minecraft Java Edition

Java servers are intended for Minecraft Java Edition players on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Depending on the selected version and software, Aternos supports server types such as Vanilla, Paper, Spigot, Fabric, Forge, and supported modpacks.

Minecraft Bedrock Edition

Aternos also provides Bedrock server options for compatible Bedrock players, including players on Windows, Android, and iOS. Console players on Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch can face additional platform, account, and custom-server limitations, so Bedrock support does not guarantee that every console can connect in every setup.

Can Bedrock players join a Java server?

Yes, usually through Geyser, installed as a supported plugin or mod. This is not automatic crossplay: the Geyser version must match the server, Bedrock players need the correct address and port, and Geyser may need updating after a Bedrock release. Microsoft-account privacy settings and console restrictions can also prevent connections.

Sandisk 1TB Portable SSD, Up to 800MB/s Read Speeds, Black (Old Model) | External Solid State Drive, Compatible with Laptops & Tablets, Up to 2M Drop Protection, USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB-C to USB-A Cable
  • Solid state performance with up to 800MB/s read speeds in a portable drive. (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Back up your content and memories on a storage solution that fits seamlessly into your mobile lifestyle.
  • Take it with you on your adventures—up to two-meter drop protection means this durable drive can take a beating. (Based on internal testing.)
  • Secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind thanks to the tough rubber hook.
  • From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.

Aternos notes that Geyser and a voice-chat mod cannot share the same server because both require a UDP port while Aternos provides one port per server.

How to create an Aternos server

The following path reflects Aternos’ official instructions as checked on August 18, 2026. Interface labels can change.

  1. Go to aternos.org.
  2. Click Play.
  3. Create an Aternos account or sign in.
  4. Select Create a server.
  5. Choose Java or Bedrock Edition.
  6. Enter a server name and Message of the Day.
  7. Click Create.
  8. Press Start.
  9. Accept the Minecraft EULA.
  10. Copy the server address shown by Aternos.
  11. In Minecraft, add or select the server and enter that address.

The server may start immediately or enter a queue. If a queue appears, Aternos shows an estimated wait and position. Near the front, you must confirm the start; missing that confirmation removes you from the queue. After confirmation, the server normally starts within a few minutes, but no fixed waiting time is guaranteed. Official server-creation guide · Aternos queue guide

What are Aternos’ main limitations?

Advantage Corresponding limitation
No hosting fee Advertising and shared capacity
Easy browser setup Less low-level control than self-hosting or paid hosting
Java and Bedrock options Crossplay requires additional configuration
Supported mods, plugins, and modpacks No unrestricted custom uploads or FTP access
No fixed playtime limit while players remain active The server stops when the last player leaves
Suitable for casual groups A queue can delay startup
External backups are available You must configure and maintain them

It is not 24/7 hosting

Aternos does not provide always-on 24/7 hosting. Its policy says the server automatically stops when the last player leaves. There is no fixed playtime limit while players remain active, but the server will not remain available for friends to join after everyone disconnects. Bots, scripts, and other attempts to bypass automatic shutdown are prohibited and may lead to restrictions or suspension. Aternos’ 24/7 hosting policy

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A queue may appear

A queue appears when demand exceeds available capacity; it is not necessarily present for every launch. Leaving the queue loses your position, and you must confirm when prompted. Do not use automation to simulate players or evade the queue.

Mods and plugins are supported, but uploads are curated

Aternos supports many server software types and provides libraries of compatible mods, plugins, and modpacks through its panel. That does not mean you can upload any mod or plugin you choose.

  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

Aternos does not provide unrestricted FTP access or arbitrary custom plugin, mod, or modpack uploads. Datapacks, resource packs, Bedrock add-ons, WorldEdit schematics, and certain configuration files can be uploaded, subject to the service’s rules. A mod or plugin must also match the Minecraft version and selected server software. Aternos file-upload and FTP policy

Performance varies

Aternos does not have one universal RAM amount, player limit, latency guarantee, or performance profile. Assigned memory depends on the server software and version, while real-world performance also depends on player count, world size, view distance, loaded chunks, farms, redstone, mods, plugins, geography, and current demand. Small vanilla worlds with a few friends are the clearest use case. Heavy modpacks, large farms, high view distances, and public servers with many simultaneous players are more likely to expose the limits of shared free hosting.

Inactive servers may be deleted

Aternos says servers that have not been started for a long period—typically around three months—may be deleted. Users with a linked email address may receive advance notice, and starting the server before the deadline is enough to keep it. If a server is deleted without a usable backup, Aternos says support cannot recover it. This matters particularly for seasonal worlds, school projects, and servers used only a few times each year. Aternos’ server-deletion policy

World uploads and backups

Aternos supports uploading an existing world, downloading a world for local backup, and replacing the active world. Before replacing or upgrading a world, confirm that it matches the selected edition, Minecraft version, and server software. A Java world cannot simply be moved to Bedrock without a separate conversion process, and conversion can introduce incompatibilities.

The documented backup workflow uses Google Drive:

  1. Link Google Drive from account settings or the server’s Backups page.
  2. Add the linked backup service to the specific server.
  3. Choose Create Backup.
  4. Optionally enable automatic backups when stopping the server.
  5. Restore from the server or account backups page when needed.

A backup can include world data, player data, settings, and installed plugins, mods, add-ons, or datapacks. Restoration replaces current server files, including the world, so create a fresh backup before restoring an older one. Aternos backup instructions

Common problems and practical fixes

The server is stuck in a queue

Wait for the displayed estimate and keep the queue page open if possible. Leaving loses your position. Watch for the confirmation step near the front; if you miss it, start the process again. Queue time depends on demand and capacity.

Friends cannot join

  1. Confirm that the server is online.
  2. Copy the displayed address exactly.
  3. Check that everyone is using the correct edition.
  4. Match the client and server versions.
  5. For Java, confirm the selected server software is compatible with each player’s setup.
  6. For Bedrock, enter the required port as well as the address.
  7. For Java–Bedrock play, confirm that Geyser is installed, running, and compatible.
  8. Check Microsoft-account multiplayer and privacy settings.
  9. Remember that the server stops after all players leave.

A mod or plugin will not install

It may not be in Aternos’ supported library, may target another Minecraft version, may require different server software, may need to be installed on players’ clients, or may require file access that Aternos does not permit. Do not use unofficial upload tools or automation to bypass those restrictions.

The server is laggy

  • Reduce view distance and simulation distance.
  • Reduce heavy farms, redstone clocks, and simultaneously loaded chunks.
  • Check the server log.
  • Temporarily remove recently added mods, plugins, or datapacks.
  • Use lighter server software where appropriate.
  • Determine whether the problem affects everyone or only one player.
  • Consider paid hosting if the workload consistently exceeds the free service’s practical limits.

Queue delays and automatic shutdown are availability rules, not proof that a particular server is performing badly. Conversely, lag caused by a large world, overloaded software, or too many entities may require reducing the workload or moving to a service with more predictable resources.

Is Aternos safe?

Aternos is operated by Aternos GmbH, a German company. Its documentation describes protected infrastructure and explains that upload restrictions partly reduce the risks associated with malicious plugins and mods. That is not an absolute security guarantee.

Use a unique password, protect the Aternos account, grant Google Drive permissions deliberately, and install only trusted mods and plugins. Minecraft’s EULA, Aternos’ terms, and server-specific moderation responsibilities still apply. Aternos terms of service

When is Aternos a good choice?

Aternos is a strong fit for a small group of friends that plays intermittently, has no hosting budget, accepts pressing Start, and can use supported mods or plugins. It is also useful for beginners who prefer a browser-based control panel to configuring a home server.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black

  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

It is a poor fit when players need to join at any time without an owner starting the server, when the world must remain online while nobody is playing, when unrestricted FTP or private custom builds are essential, or when a public community needs predictable uptime, performance, moderation tools, and support.

Aternos versus the main alternatives

Exaroton

Exaroton is Aternos GmbH’s paid, higher-control alternative. Its current published model, checked August 18, 2026, charges 1 credit per gigabyte of RAM per hour; storage costs up to 10 credits per 30 days, with up to 10 GB per server. Its site also advertises a free trial without requiring a payment method. Credit-to-currency costs, taxes, bundles, and promotions can change, so check the official purchase page before paying. Exaroton

Exaroton is the more natural upgrade if you need no queue, custom file uploads, automatic starts and stops, more control, higher performance, advanced management features, or a smoother Aternos import path.

Minecraft Realms

Minecraft Realms is a natural alternative for players who want an official Minecraft subscription and simple setup. It may be less suitable for users seeking extensive mod/plugin flexibility or unrestricted server-file control. Plan availability, player limits, and prices vary by edition and region and should be checked on the official page.

Self-hosting

Self-hosting on a home PC, spare computer, VPS, or dedicated server provides full file access and control. It also makes you responsible for hardware or hosting costs, electricity, port forwarding, security, backups, bandwidth, and keeping the machine available. It is powerful but not the simplest free option for beginners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Aternos is best understood as free, on-demand Minecraft hosting for casual groups—not as a permanent dedicated server. It removes the hosting bill and makes basic server creation accessible, but the price of that model is advertising, shared capacity, possible queues, automatic shutdown, curated file access, and the risk of deletion after prolonged inactivity. For a few friends who play occasionally, it can be an excellent fit. For always-on worlds, custom server files, or demanding public communities, paid hosting or self-hosting is more appropriate.
