What Is Bloom in Games? Should You Turn It On or Off?

Bloom adds a soft glow around bright lights and reflections. Whether to keep it on depends on how it looks and performs in your game.

Bloom is a graphics effect that makes bright lights and reflections appear to glow beyond their edges. Keep it on if you like that softer, brighter look; reduce it or turn it off if the glow obscures detail, washes out the image, or coincides with performance trouble. The right choice depends on the game, its implementation, and your preference.

What bloom does in a game

Bloom is a post-processing effect: it alters the image after the game has drawn the scene. Bright areas such as lamps, explosions, and reflections gain a soft halo or seem to bleed into nearby pixels. Epic describes the effect as “Haloing to produce glow effects for bright objects such as lights.” Epic’s Unreal Engine bloom documentation explains the effect and its rendering options.

Bloom can make bright sources feel more luminous against darker surroundings, or create a deliberate cinematic or stylized mood. It is distinct from lens flare, although a game’s effects may combine bloom with lens flares or lens dirt. Developers may also use it with exposure to signal a dream, flashback, or stunned state. Epic’s post-process tutorial discusses those uses.

Should you turn bloom on or off?

Use the setting that looks better in the game you are playing. Bloom is not universally better on or off, and a setting that works well in one game may look different in another.

  • 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
  • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.
  • Leave it on if subtle halos around bright objects make the scene more appealing or help sell its lighting and mood.
  • Lower it or switch it off if halos spread too far, bright areas blur together, nearby details become hard to see, or the overall image looks washed out.
  • Try a lower intensity or quality setting if the game offers one and you want some glow without its strongest effect.
  • Test it for performance if you are troubleshooting frame rate. Bloom has a rendering cost, but there is no universal FPS penalty that applies to every game and system.

How to compare the setting

  1. Find a scene with bright lights or reflections against darker surroundings.
  2. Toggle bloom, or change its intensity if the game provides a slider.
  3. Compare the halo’s strength and spread, then check whether fine details near the light sources remain visible.
  4. If frame rate is the concern, compare performance in that same scene with the same other settings.

Start with the game’s default or a low intensity if you are unsure, then adjust to taste. A menu preview or another game is not a reliable substitute for checking the effect in the scene you actually play.

Does bloom affect performance?

It can, but the cost depends on how the game implements the effect and which settings it uses. Epic says Unreal Engine’s standard bloom has a significant performance advantage over convolution bloom, and recommends standard bloom for most game applications. Convolution bloom is aimed at cinematics or high-end hardware and can add visual complexity; standard bloom can also brighten the overall image. Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation describes those tradeoffs, but does not provide a universal player-facing FPS loss.

Unity’s developer controls illustrate why results vary: its bloom documentation includes intensity, threshold, diffusion, anamorphic ratio, and Fast Mode. Fast Mode reduces bloom quality to improve performance and is recommended for mobile or lower-end platforms; reducing diffusion can also make the effect faster. These are implementation controls, not a guarantee of a particular frame-rate change in a finished game. Unity’s bloom documentation covers the options.

Unity also notes that bloom behaves differently across its packages, so games can offer different controls and produce different results despite using the same setting name. Unity’s effect-availability reference explains package differences.

What to check if bloom looks wrong

  • Glow overwhelms the scene: reduce intensity or disable bloom.
  • Details disappear near lights: compare with a lower setting or off; bloom may be softening or spreading bright areas in a way you dislike.
  • The image seems too bright: try less bloom, since some implementations can brighten the overall image.
  • You suspect a frame-rate issue: compare the same scene with bloom changed and other settings held constant. If the game has a bloom quality option, test that as well.

Bloom is an image effect rather than a separate light source. Its purpose is visual, and the exact appearance and cost are determined by the game’s rendering implementation—not by the word “bloom” alone.
