What Is CMAF and How Does It Work for Live Streaming?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CMAF (Common Media Application Format) is a standardized way to package segmented audio and video so streaming systems can deliver media through HLS, DASH, or both. It defines the media objects—the tracks, fragments, and related structure—not the playlist or manifest rules that tell a player how to present them. CMAF can be part of a low-latency workflow, but it does not guarantee a particular latency or universal device compatibility.

What CMAF is—and what it is not

CMAF is a media format and object model for segmented media, identified by MPEG as MPEG-A Part 19, ISO/IEC 23000-19. It organizes encoded audio, video, subtitles, and related media into tracks and fragments. HLS and DASH are presentation and delivery specifications that can use CMAF media objects.

That distinction matters in practice: a CMAF file or set of media objects is not, by itself, a complete streaming presentation. HLS uses playlists; DASH uses a Media Presentation Description (MPD). Those manifests describe how a player finds and presents the media. The media objects may be shared, but the manifests and client requirements remain specific to each delivery format.

MPEG’s standards index lists editions one through three of CMAF as published or released and edition four as ongoing, with a committee-draft text dated 2026-08-24. The fourth edition is in progress, not a published edition. MPEG’s CMAF standards page

How CMAF media is organized

Apple describes CMAF media using a hierarchy of tracks, headers, fragments, segments, and chunks. These terms refer to different parts of the format and should not be used interchangeably.

  • Track: A sequence of encoded samples for a media component, such as video, audio, or subtitles. A track is stored in a container derived from ISO Base Media File Format (ISO BMFF).
  • Header: Initialization information for a track, carried in a CMAF header.
  • Fragment: A group of media samples in a track. A CMAF track has a header and one or more fragments.
  • Segment: One or more consecutive fragments from the same track.
  • Chunk: A sequential subset of samples within a fragment.

A complete track can also be represented as one ISO BMFF track file. The separate fragments, segments, or chunks are useful in streaming workflows because media can be made available incrementally rather than waiting for an entire programme file. Apple’s CMAF overview

How CMAF works in a live streaming pipeline

A typical live workflow begins with an encoder receiving a broadcast or other audiovisual source. The encoder produces multiple encoded tracks—often alternative bitrate or resolution versions—with switching points aligned in time. It packages these as CMAF tracks. From there, the media can reach a packager or a destination that accepts an already-packaged presentation.

Encoder to an active packager

  1. Encode the source. The encoder creates the audio and video tracks required by the service, including alternatives intended for adaptive playback.
  2. Package as CMAF tracks. The tracks include their initialization headers and media fragments. Aligning switching points lets a player move between compatible alternatives at fragment boundaries.
  3. Send the tracks through a CMAF Ingest interface. An active packager receives the incoming media and can package it, encrypt it, transcode it, stitch content, or perform other processing.
  4. Generate the presentation. The packager creates an HLS playlist, a DASH MPD, or both, with the relevant media objects and presentation information.
  5. Deliver through an origin or CDN. The resulting presentation and media are made available to players through the delivery infrastructure.

Ingest of an already-packaged presentation

A different workflow sends complete DASH or HLS manifests and media objects to a passive destination, such as an origin, cloud storage, or CDN. In this model, the destination accepts a packaged presentation rather than acting as a packager that processes incoming tracks. The choice depends on whether the destination must perform active media processing or can receive a presentation that is already ready for delivery. DASH-IF Live Media Ingest Protocol

Alignment, synchronization, and failover

DASH-IF’s ingest examples recommend constant-duration segments, aligned audio and video boundaries, and timing relative to a shared anchor for synchronization. The specification also describes redundant live sources and failover behavior. These are workflow recommendations and examples in the specification, not universal settings that every live deployment must use. Actual timing, redundancy, and recovery behavior depend on the encoder, ingest interface, packager, origin, and player.

How CMAF relates to HLS and DASH

CMAF does not replace HLS or DASH. It provides a shared way to structure media; HLS playlists and DASH MPDs provide their respective presentation descriptions and delivery rules. MPEG describes DASH as a standard for streaming over existing HTTP infrastructure, supporting both live and on-demand delivery, and lists a part specifically for delivery of CMAF content with DASH. HLS and DASH can sometimes reference the same CMAF Addressable Objects. Apple explains that sharing those resources can allow efficient caching across platforms. In other words, a service may avoid maintaining duplicate media-object sets for every presentation format when the workflow and client requirements permit sharing. The HLS playlist and DASH MPD still contain their own presentation information, and shared objects do not make every client, codec, encryption profile, or subtitle format interchangeable. Apple’s CMAF overview

Adaptive switching: tracks, switching sets, and selection sets

CMAF’s adaptive model organizes alternative encodings into switching sets. A player can switch among suitable tracks at fragment boundaries—for example, moving between bitrate or resolution alternatives as conditions change. For this to work, switching alternatives need compatible timing and aligned switching points.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aligned switching sets group time-aligned alternatives, which may use different encodings or codecs. Selection sets group different choices, such as language tracks or camera angles. A presentation brings synchronized selection sets together. These groupings describe how alternatives relate; they do not mean that every player supports every codec or choice. Apple’s CMAF overview

Does CMAF make a live stream low latency?

No—not by itself. CMAF can be used in low-latency workflows, but the result depends on the full chain: how the encoder creates and publishes media, how segments or chunks are exposed, how manifests are updated, how the origin or CDN delivers the objects, and how the player requests and presents them. A CMAF label alone is not evidence of a particular end-to-end delay.

Apple’s HLS authoring material sets out separate low-latency requirements, while DASH-IF describes low-latency CMAF workflows. Those requirements and workflow choices must be coordinated across the implementation; the format does not supply a universal latency figure or guarantee that a given service meets one. Compatibility: check the whole playback combination

Standardization does not guarantee that every device can play every CMAF presentation. Compatibility depends on the target player and the particular combination of codec, encryption, subtitles, and other profile features. Apple describes three CMAF presentation profiles—unencrypted, cbcs, and cenc—and says HLS supports unencrypted and cbcs; its overview also identifies a subtitle limitation. HLS support can depend on client revision. These details are not a blanket guarantee for all devices or all current content profiles. Apple’s CMAF overview

Before deployment, verify the current authoring requirements and test the actual combinations your audience uses: target players and device revisions, codecs, encryption or DRM profile, subtitle format, and the HLS or DASH presentation. Avoid assuming that support for CMAF as a general format means support for every feature within a CMAF workflow.

Choosing an ingest and delivery workflow

There is no universally best CMAF live workflow. The right design depends on what the destination and audience require. Work through these decisions before choosing an ingest mode:

  • Processing: Does the destination need an active packager to encrypt, transcode, stitch, or otherwise process media, or can it accept a complete HLS or DASH presentation?
  • Presentation formats: Do you need HLS, DASH, or both? Can the same CMAF media objects serve both, given the intended codecs, encryption, subtitles, and clients?
  • Track alignment: Are audio and video timelines synchronized, and are alternative tracks aligned at switching points?
  • Playback support: Have you confirmed the target players’ requirements for the selected codec, encryption profile, subtitles, and CMAF features?
  • Resilience: What synchronization and failover behavior does the live service need, and which parts of the pipeline are responsible for it?

If you mean keeping a YouTube channel live, rather than building a CMAF pipeline

CMAF is relevant to engineering a segmented-media delivery workflow. It is not the same thing as keeping an uploaded video playing continuously on a YouTube channel. For that separate use case, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. It is not a CMAF packager or a general-purpose live camera encoder.

To try that YouTube-only workflow, start with StreamNeo’s free first day; no card is required.
