Deep of Night is a high-difficulty online Expedition mode in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN. To unlock it, defeat the Nightlord Night Aspect. The mode hides the target Nightlord until an expedition begins, strengthens enemies, and uses a rating-and-depth system that makes later runs more demanding.
What you need to access Deep of Night
- Own or have access to ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN; Deep of Night is an in-game mode, not a separate purchase.
- Defeat Night Aspect, the Nightlord required to unlock the mode.
- Connect online. Expeditions support one to three players, including solo play.
Bandai Namco lists the game for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Online access is required for the mode; the publisher does not establish that the servers are currently available on every platform.

How Deep of Night changes an Expedition
The target is unknown before the run
You do not learn which Nightlord you will face until the expedition starts. Because the target fight is concealed, a loadout built around one specific boss can leave you poorly prepared. Bandai Namco recommends flexible relic setups; as its mode explainer puts it, “You will need to adapt flexibly to changing situations in battle.”

Enemies are stronger, and Shifting Earth is absent
Enemies are stronger than in ordinary Expeditions, and some more powerful variants have a red sheen. Ongoing Shifting Earth states do not apply, so do not plan a run around those effects being present.

Weapons can have trade-offs
Enhanced enemies or challenges can yield weapons with several additional effects. Some effects are harmful, so inspect a weapon’s effects before picking it up rather than assuming that more modifiers mean a better choice.
Depths Relics are mode-specific
Completing Deep of Night expeditions can award Depths Relics. They work only in Deep of Night and use three newly unlocked relic slots, so they do not function as general-purpose upgrades for other Expedition modes.
How rating and depth work
Defeating Nightlords raises your rating; failed expeditions lower it. Rating determines your depth, and the publisher says the challenge increases as depth rises. Multiplayer matchmaking generally pairs players at similar depths. Rating changes apply in both single-player and multiplayer, but quitting or disconnecting during a multiplayer session can trigger a rating penalty.

These rules have received adjustments. In version 1.02.3, Bandai Namco added an option to reduce depth by one level, demotion protection at depths 3, 4, and 5, and protection against point loss for depth-1 players matched into higher-depth expeditions. The same notes describe provisional fixes to ranking calculations. These are dated patch details, not a guarantee that every platform build currently behaves identically.

Check patch details for current behavior
Ranking safeguards and DLC interactions can change between updates. Version 1.03.1 notes document conditions under which some DLC additions could appear in Deep of Night when matched with players who owned The Forsaken Hollows. For practical decisions, check the latest official notes for your platform rather than treating an older patch description as a live guarantee. Bandai Namco Europe’s news index listed Hotfix 1.03.5, dated March 31, 2026, as its latest Nightreign news item at the time of the cited listing; that does not confirm the version installed on your system or live server status.
