Divinity is a newly announced role-playing game from Larian Studios, the team behind Baldur’s Gate 3. It is set in Rivellon, has a new story, and does not require players to have played Larian’s earlier games. Returning players may find extra continuity and character context, but Larian has not presented it as a Baldur’s Gate sequel or as Divinity: Original Sin 3.
What is Divinity?
Larian announced Divinity on 12 December 2025 with a trailer at The Game Awards 2025. It is a new RPG set in Rivellon, the world of Larian’s earlier Divinity games. The studio called it its “most ambitious title yet” in its announcement.

It is also the first Larian game titled simply Divinity. Founder and game director Swen Vincke said, “Despite our long history with the series, this is our first game entitled ‘Divinity.’” That title is deliberate: Larian describes the project as drawing together its previous work, rather than naming it as a direct numbered continuation of Divinity: Original Sin.
Is it connected to Baldur’s Gate 3?
The connection is the developer: Divinity is being made by Larian, the studio behind Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian says the new game has a completely new story, so it is not presented as a Baldur’s Gate sequel. Its setting is Rivellon, not the Forgotten Realms setting of Baldur’s Gate.

Larian’s official FAQ says players do not need experience with earlier titles. People who have played Divinity: Original Sin or Divinity: Original Sin 2 may recognize continuity and characters, but the studio says prior knowledge is not a prerequisite.
What kind of RPG is Larian aiming to make?
Larian’s official game site describes the project as an RPG made by the Baldur’s Gate 3 team and says it aims for greater breadth and depth. The site qualifies that ambition with “At least, that’s the plan”; these are the studio’s goals, not an independently verified measure of the finished game.

In interviews in December 2025, Vincke discussed ambitions for player agency across narrative, character development, combat, and exploration, including more reactive outcomes and consequences that can unfold over longer sequences. He told PC Gamer the level of agency would be “much higher than what happened in BG3,” while explicitly describing that as an ambition. In a GamesRadar+ interview, he summarized the theme as: “It’s a game about power and how to use it.” Neither interview is a final feature list; specific mechanics and how they work have not been established in these statements.
Do you need to play Divinity: Original Sin 2 first?
No. Larian says Divinity tells a new story and does not require familiarity with Divinity: Original Sin 2 or other earlier games. Playing them is optional: it may give returning players more context for connections and characters, but the new RPG is intended to be approachable on its own.

Has Divinity received a release date or platform announcement?
The material cited here does not establish a release date or platforms. A GameSpot report published 1 April 2026 quoted Vincke saying the game remained rough or incomplete in places but was beginning to feel alive; that report said no release date had been announced at that time. This dated update does not verify the game’s status after April 2026, so it should not be treated as a current October 2026 release announcement.
