DLSS 5 is NVIDIA’s neural-rendering technology for changing a game’s rendered image with AI-generated lighting and material detail. NVIDIA says it processes frame color and motion data, and developers can tune or mask the effect. As of October 8, 2026, NVIDIA reports that it is available in NBA 2K27 on RTX 50 Series GPUs and through GeForce NOW Ultimate. Other games announced as supporters should not be treated as confirmed releases with DLSS 5 until their availability is verified.
What DLSS 5 does
NVIDIA announced DLSS 5 on March 16, 2026, describing it as a real-time neural-rendering model that adds photorealistic lighting and material detail to game imagery. Unlike a simple resolution-upscaling label, this is a rendering stage that modifies the appearance of the frame. NVIDIA says it can operate at up to 4K; that is a stated capability, not a guarantee of image quality or frame rate on every system. NVIDIA’s announcement
In NVIDIA’s September 2026 technical description, DLSS 5 is a final neural-rendering stage. The model takes the game engine’s rendered frame and additional scene information—including artist-authored geometry, textures, lighting buffers, color, and motion vectors—and infers lighting and material detail. NVIDIA says the model runs locally on a single RTX 50 Series GPU and processes one frame in to produce one frame out, a design it says supports temporal stability. Richer lighting inputs, such as ray-traced or path-traced lighting, can improve output accuracy, according to NVIDIA. NVIDIA’s developer article
That description matters when comparing DLSS 5 with upscaling or frame generation: NVIDIA presents DLSS 5 as an image-rendering treatment, not a universal performance boost. The announcement and developer article do not provide a general independent benchmark for its net frame-rate impact. Results would need to be assessed in a specific game and configuration.

How developers can control the effect
NVIDIA says developers can choose among models, adjust Structure Intensity and Tone Intensity, apply semantic AI masking, and use engine-level masks to target objects or groups of assets. These controls are intended to let studios decide where the effect appears and how strongly it changes the image.
For NBA 2K27, NVIDIA says Visual Concepts used overall tone and style controls plus a per-pixel uplift mask, while preserving scanned facial geometry. That is NVIDIA’s account of one implementation; it does not establish how every studio will tune DLSS 5 or how every player will judge the result.

Does DLSS 5 change how games look?
It can: the stated purpose is to alter lighting and material detail, so the rendered image may look different with the feature enabled. Whether those changes enhance a game or depart from its intended art direction is disputed. The Associated Press reported criticism of the launch demonstration, including viewers’ concerns about apparent facial changes and altered artistic intent. NVIDIA responded that developers have detailed artistic control over DLSS 5. The criticism and NVIDIA’s position are competing views, not a settled claim that the effect will look the same—or be received the same way—in every game. Associated Press report
What games support DLSS 5?
As of October 8, 2026, NVIDIA specifically reports DLSS 5 availability in NBA 2K27. Its March announcement named these other games as part of announced partner support, but that announcement is not confirmation that each one is currently shipping with the feature:

What GPU do you need for DLSS 5?
For local play, NVIDIA’s September 2026 availability information identifies GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPUs as the supported hardware for NBA 2K27. The available information does not say that a particular RTX 50 Series model, such as an RTX 5090, is required. A compatible GPU alone is not enough: the game must also implement DLSS 5.

NVIDIA has also said it plans to expand official support to RTX 40 Series after further performance tuning, according to a September 4, 2026 report by Tom’s Hardware quoting NVIDIA PR. That is a reported plan, not a confirmed release date or evidence that RTX 40 Series support is available now. Tom’s Hardware report
Using GeForce NOW instead
NVIDIA says GeForce NOW Ultimate members can experience DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 through NVIDIA-operated RTX 5080-powered cloud gaming rigs. This is a cloud option rather than a statement that a player’s local GPU supports DLSS 5. Availability may depend on the service and region; check GeForce NOW for current access details.

What the announcement’s headline figures mean
NVIDIA’s March announcement cited a 375,000× increase in compute across the graphics milestones it chose to compare. That is NVIDIA’s framing of the industry’s compute progression, not an independently validated DLSS 5 benchmark. The same announcement said DLSS 4.5 uses AI to draw 23 of every 24 pixels on screen; that figure describes DLSS 4.5, not DLSS 5. Neither number establishes DLSS 5’s performance in a particular game.
Why studios are adopting it
NVIDIA’s launch announcement framed DLSS 5 as a way to combine handcrafted rendering with generative AI. NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang called it “the GPT moment for graphics,” saying the technology blends handcrafted rendering with generative AI while preserving artistic control. Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard said the studio was excited to work with DLSS 5 and aimed to bring it to Starfield and future Bethesda titles; that statement is a forward-looking commitment, not confirmation of current availability. CAPCOM executive Jun Takeuchi described it as a step toward greater visual fidelity in Resident Evil. These endorsements explain the partners’ stated interest, but do not resolve concerns about how the effect may change a game’s look. NVIDIA’s launch announcement
