FNCS stands for Fortnite Championship Series, Epic Games’ official competitive tournament series for Fortnite. In 2026 it is played in Duos using Battle Royale, runs as a six-event structure, and feeds into the Fortnite Global Championship. Unlike a regular Fortnite match, where you play whoever the matchmaker places you with and your results only affect your personal stats, FNCS is a scheduled, ranked competition with qualification stages, published scoring, and prize money. Its format changes from season to season, so the details below are specific to 2026.
What the name means and where it comes from
Fortnite Championship Series is the name Epic Games uses for its organized competitive play. The letters FNCS are used throughout Epic’s official material, and the series is the route by which teams earn places at the top-level event, the Fortnite Global Championship. Think of FNCS as the whole season of competition, and the Global Championship as its culminating in-person event.

How FNCS differs from a regular Fortnite match
A standard Battle Royale match is open and unscheduled. FNCS differs in four practical ways:
- Fixed game settings. Epic’s official 2026 rules state: “The FNCS will be played using ‘Duos’ and ‘Battle Royale’ game mode settings.” Every participating team plays the same mode, so results are comparable.
- Team-based entry. Teams qualify as units. Your team’s placement, not your individual kill count, determines advancement.
- Staged elimination. Competition moves through qualification stages, heats, and finals rather than a single open ladder.
- Prizes and titles. Each Major pays a cash prize pool, and the winner receives the Champions Pickaxe, an in-game cosmetic reward that stays with the winner until the next FNCS concludes.
The 2026 structure: six events
Epic’s 2026 rules define six events. They are listed below in the order they appear in the rules, with the role each plays in the path toward the Global Championship.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeemable on accounts in the United States and in U.S. Dollars.
- Gift card must be redeemed at EpicGames.com/redeem. This gift card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly on a console device (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc.)
- If you play Fortnite experiences on a console device, you need to link your Epic Games account to your console account(s) so items purchased at Fortnite.com/item-shop appear across all of your linked accounts
- Requires internet connection, valid Epic account and prior acceptance of the terms
- Redemption: Online
| Event | Role in the 2026 structure |
|---|---|
| FNCS Major 1 | First Major; includes qualification stages, Heats, and Finals. |
| Major 1 Second Chance Qualifier | A second-chance route connected to Major 1, as set out in the rules. |
| Major 1 Summit | Awards direct qualification to the Fortnite Global Championship. |
| FNCS Major 2 | Second Major; includes qualification stages, Heats, and Finals. Its Finals award direct qualification. |
| Global Championship Last Chance | Final qualification route; its Finals award direct qualification. |
| Fortnite Global Championship | The in-person championship event that the series leads toward. |
Because the rules distinguish regions and set different entry and advancement thresholds, a team’s route through these six events depends on its region. Do not assume one region’s path applies everywhere.
How teams get into the Majors: the Play-In Stage
For Major 1 and Major 2, teams must have already reached FNCS Division 1 to take part in the Play-In Stage. The Play-In Stage has two sessions, each lasting about three hours, and each session allows up to 11 matches. Advancement depends on region:

A worked example: the Major 2 Finals
The official Major 2 Finals event page, covering August 1 to 3, 2026, shows how the structure plays out in practice. The event used Duos and Battle Royale and ran 12 matches over two days. In the NAC leaderboard, twis boltz and twis acorn finished first with 617 points.
Rank #3
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
The page also lists the teams that advanced to the in-person Fortnite Global Championship from this event:
| Region | Teams advancing to the Global Championship (Major 2 Finals) |
|---|---|
| EU | 9 |
| NAC | 6 |
| ASIA | 2 |
| OCE | 2 |
| ME | 2 |
| BR | 2 |
| NAW | 2 |
That totals 25 teams from this single event. These figures describe the Major 2 Finals as published on its event page; they are not a general rule for how many slots every Major awards.

What the Major winner gets
Epic’s explainer states that the Major winner receives the largest portion of that Major’s cash prize pool. The same winner holds the Champions Pickaxe until the next FNCS concludes. The sources reviewed do not state the prize pool amounts for 2026, so check the event page for the specific Major you are following.

The word “Major” does not mean the same thing across seasons, because Epic changes formats and advancement rules. When you compare two seasons, check these points in order:

Where to confirm current details
The 2026 rules were published by Epic Games on March 19, 2026. Event dates, qualification slots, eligibility, and payout amounts can change by season or region, so confirm them against the current rules and the event page before relying on a figure. The Major 2 Finals figures above are as published on that event page in August 2026.
FNCS is a digital competition. Understanding it does not require buying anything; the Champions Pickaxe is an in-game reward.
