In Rust, griefing is deliberate disruption or harassment intended to make another player’s game unplayable or unusually difficult beyond normal PvP, defense, or raiding. Tool-cupboard denial, sealing a base after a raid, repeated trapping, door camping directed at one person, threats, and stalking can qualify. The boundary is not defined by one universal list of tactics: Facepunch prohibits griefing and harassment, while each community server may define, allow, or punish specific behavior differently.

What griefing means in Rust

Rust is built around conflict. Players can kill one another, steal resources, destroy structures, defend territory, and raid bases. Those actions are ordinary game objectives when they follow the server’s rules. Griefing is the extra intent to disrupt, intimidate, or prevent someone from reasonably continuing to play rather than simply winning a fight or taking loot.

Intent, persistence, and the effect on the target are useful indicators, but they are not a universal mechanical test. A tactic that is legal on one community server may be restricted on another. Read the current rules for the specific server before assuming that an incident is reportable or permitted.

Typical signs of griefing

  • The same player repeatedly targets one person or group after the original fight or raid has ended.
  • Someone uses building privilege, doors, walls, traps, or other structures mainly to block recovery and access rather than to secure loot.
  • A player follows, threatens, stalks, or obstructs a target across multiple encounters.
  • The conduct continues after an admin, server rule, or reasonable in-game boundary makes the behavior clear.

What is usually not griefing by itself

  • Killing an opponent in an area where PvP is allowed.
  • Defending a base, countering a raid, taking loot, or destroying a target’s structures as part of a normal raid.
  • Using traps or doors as ordinary base defenses without a pattern of personal harassment.

These examples describe the distinction readers usually need, not a promise that every server will classify an event the same way. Server rules and moderator decisions control the practical outcome.

What Facepunch’s rules prohibit

Facepunch’s Code of Conduct applies across its games and states: “Do not grief, harass, stalk, threaten or impersonate other players (or anyone from Facepunch).” The same code says suspected violations can be reported with in-game tools or to Facepunch support, and that violations may result in suspension or a ban.

Facepunch’s Terms of Service also prohibit users from “hack, harm, grief, harass, threaten, interrupt, interfere with or misuse” its services, accounts, network software and services, or other users. These are platform-level rules; they do not replace the additional rules written by a community-server operator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Facepunch’s community-server and hosting guidance permits private, unofficial, and community servers when they comply with the published guidelines. It explicitly prohibits cheating, griefing, and hacking. Serious or repeated breaches can result in a server being removed from the browser or other sanctions. A server may therefore enforce a stricter definition than the minimum platform rules, provided its rules are disclosed and applied consistently.

Common forms of griefing

Tool-cupboard denial

A tool cupboard (TC) controls building privilege around a base and prevents the protected structure from decaying when it has the required upkeep. Taking or breaking the TC can therefore remove building access and affect the base’s upkeep at the same time. Deliberately placing or controlling a TC solely to keep another player from rebuilding, accessing, or maintaining a base is commonly called TC griefing.

A TC action during a legitimate raid is not automatically griefing. The relevant questions are whether the server limits TC placement, whether the action is part of taking the base, and whether the player continues to deny access after the raid for the purpose of harassment. Check the server’s raid and building-privilege rules before filing a complaint.

Sealing a base after a raid

Raiders often place doors, walls, floors, or other building pieces to secure an opened base. That can be a normal tactical part of a raid. It becomes a griefing concern when the stated or observable purpose is to trap the former owner, permanently block every practical route to recovery, or keep returning solely to prevent play after the loot objective is complete.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

There is no single Facepunch-published list that labels every type of post-raid seal as griefing. Some servers allow sealing; others prohibit it, restrict it to a time window, or provide a protection period. The server’s written rule and the moderator’s interpretation decide the case.

Trapping, door camping, and repeated obstruction

Traps and door camping are normal defensive or offensive tools when used as part of a fight. A pattern of repeatedly trapping one player at their sleeping bag, blocking every exit, destroying replacement doors, or waiting outside a base long after a conflict can indicate targeted harassment. Save evidence showing the pattern rather than relying on one ambiguous encounter.

Stalking, threats, and personal harassment

Following a player from base to base, making threats, or using repeated messages to intimidate them falls closer to the conduct explicitly named in Facepunch’s Code of Conduct. Preserve the exact wording and context. Do not answer threats with threats; report them through the appropriate channel.

  1. Identify the server rule. Look for sections covering raiding, building privilege, TC placement, combat zones, offline raids, trapping, harassment, and post-raid sealing.
  2. Separate the objective from the behavior. Taking resources or disabling a base can be a raid objective. Repeatedly returning after the objective is complete only to block play points more strongly toward griefing.
  3. Check duration and repetition. A short action during combat is different from a sustained pattern over hours or multiple days.
  4. Record the impact. Note whether the player was prevented from placing a TC, repairing, leaving a room, recovering a base, or safely playing at all.
  5. Ask an admin for a ruling. Present the rule and evidence instead of asserting that your preferred classification is universal.
Situation Why it may be allowed Why it may be punished
Raiders place a door while fighting inside It can secure a breach and protect raid loot. A server may ban sealing or require an escape route.
Raiders destroy or replace a TC TC control is a normal part of taking a base. Using a TC only to deny rebuilding may violate an anti-grief rule.
Repeated door camping Waiting for an active opponent can be ordinary PvP. Targeting the same player after the fight, especially with threats or obstruction, may be harassment.
Traps around a base Traps are ordinary base defenses where permitted. Some servers restrict trapping entrances or using traps to prevent all recovery.

The table illustrates why context matters; it is not a substitute for the current rule set of the server you are playing.

What to do when someone is griefing you

1. Read the server’s rules before confronting the player

Open the server’s rules page, loading-screen message, Discord, website, or in-game help command. Find the reporting route and the sections on PvP, raids, TCs, base sealing, combat logging, harassment, and evidence. Rules can differ between official, private, and modded servers, and they may change after a wipe.

2. Stop giving the incident more targets

If it is safe, leave the immediate area, avoid arguing in global chat, and move valuable items to a secure location. Do not retaliate with threats, exploits, or unrelated destruction. Retaliation can create a second rule violation and make the original incident harder for an admin to evaluate.

3. Capture useful evidence

Save screenshots or video that show the player’s name, the relevant structures, and the sequence of events. Record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Server name and, if available, its region or wipe identifier.
  • Player and team names, including name changes visible in the footage.
  • Date and time with your time zone.
  • Map coordinates or a recognizable location, provided you can record them safely.
  • The rule section you believe applies.
  • Chat messages, threats, signs, or voice communications that establish intent.
  • What happened before and after the clip, including whether a raid or fight was still active.

Keep the original files. Cropped screenshots can be useful for a ticket, but an unedited clip gives moderators more context. Facepunch does not prescribe one universal evidence format, so follow the server’s submission limits.

4. Use the server’s moderation process

Community servers commonly use an in-game report command, a ticket system, a Discord channel, or an administrator account. Submit one clear report with the timeline, rule reference, evidence, and the practical harm. Avoid mass-reporting, public accusations, or posting personal information. If the server asks you to use a particular channel, use that channel so the staff can locate the relevant logs.

5. Escalate platform violations appropriately

Facepunch says Code-of-Conduct violations can be reported with in-game tools or by contacting Facepunch support. Use that route for conduct covered by the platform rules, such as threats, stalking, cheating, or serious harassment. A community admin remains the correct first contact for a server-specific rule dispute, such as whether a particular seal was allowed.

6. Move to a better-moderated server when necessary

If reports receive no response, rules are hidden, or staff enforce them inconsistently, changing servers is often the most reliable solution. Keep your evidence and note the server’s moderation history before investing another wipe there. Facepunch’s community-server model allows different operators and rule sets, so moderation quality is a legitimate selection criterion.

Protecting your base from TC and post-raid problems

Keep the TC supplied and secured

A stocked TC provides the resources needed for upkeep and preserves building privilege. Place it where an attacker cannot reach it immediately through a single soft side or obvious breach, and build access controls around it according to the server’s rules. Check its contents and authorization list regularly, especially after a teammate leaves.

Facepunch’s Devblog 198 explains that when a resource-containing cupboard is destroyed, those resources can purchase up to 24 hours of decay protection for connected building blocks. Blocks added after the TC is destroyed do not receive that protection. The protection is therefore a temporary buffer, not a way to rebuild indefinitely without a functioning cupboard.

The Rust Wiki describes the same mechanic and notes that a locked cupboard is more likely to consume upkeep. Treat the TC as an active maintenance system: keep enough resources inside, verify the lock, and replace or reauthorize it promptly after a breach.

Design for recovery, not only for defense

  • Use multiple routes between the exterior, core, and TC so one door or wall cannot end the defense.
  • Keep a backup building kit and essential materials in a separate, less obvious location where server rules permit it.
  • Plan a way to place a new TC if the original is destroyed, while respecting any anti-griefing or building restrictions.
  • Document your own base layout and authorization state so an admin can understand what changed after a raid.

What protection does Rust Softcore provide?

Official Softcore settings provide documented limits that can reduce the impact of some raids, but they are not universal protection on every server. The current settings include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Softcore setting What it does Important limit
Maximum team size Four players This is a mode rule, not a guarantee on other server types.
PvP damage 25% less than the standard setting It reduces damage; it does not remove PvP.
Storage recovery Players retain 50% of storage loot after a raid The retention applies to the Softcore mode’s rules.
Anti-seal window For 48 hours after raiders break the TC, raiders cannot seal or grief the base The protection is tied to the Softcore TC event and its stated time window.

Softcore is useful when you want smaller teams, less lethal combat, partial loot recovery, and a defined post-TC protection period. Confirm that the server is actually running the official settings; a server that merely uses the word “softcore” may have additional modifications.

  • Clear definitions: The rules should explain TC denial, post-raid sealing, trapping, door camping, harassment, and acceptable PvP.
  • Visible reporting route: You should know where to open a ticket and what evidence staff expect.
  • Response practice: Look for timestamps, appeals information, and consistent answers rather than promises of “active admins” alone.
  • Protection settings: Check for Softcore rules, raid windows, offline-raid limits, team-size caps, or other stated safeguards.
  • Plugin and mod disclosure: Community servers should disclose plugins or mods under Facepunch guidance so players know what mechanics differ from vanilla Rust.
  • Enforcement history: A short, specific rulebook that is actually enforced is more useful than a long list with no reporting process.

Frequently misunderstood situations

“They destroyed my TC, so it must be griefing.”

Destroying a TC during a raid can be a normal way to take building privilege. It becomes a griefing complaint when the server forbids the tactic or the player uses control only to deny recovery outside the permitted raid objective.

“They sealed my base, so Facepunch will automatically punish them.”

Facepunch prohibits griefing, but its public rules do not publish one universal list covering every seal. Submit the facts to the server admin and, when the conduct also involves platform-level harassment or threats, use the appropriate Facepunch reporting route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“One door camper is enough to prove harassment.”

A single encounter may be ordinary PvP. A documented pattern of repeated targeting, threats, stalking, or obstruction is stronger evidence of prohibited conduct. Include the timeline rather than relying on labels.

“The server has no rule, so anything is allowed.”

Server-specific silence does not override Facepunch’s Code of Conduct or Terms of Service. Griefing, harassment, stalking, threats, cheating, and interference remain covered by platform rules even when a local rulebook is incomplete.

Bottom line for a griefing report

Describe the behavior, not just the outcome: identify the player, show the repeated or obstructive actions, cite the server rule, and provide an unedited timeline. Normal PvP and raiding are part of Rust; deliberate harassment and disruption are not. A secured, supplied TC, a recovery-minded base layout, and a server with clear rules and responsive moderators give you the most practical protection.
