The quickest reliable path is to generate an Acorn command, define its Laravel-style signature, put the work in handle(), and invoke it through wp acorn. Run wp acorn make:command SeoAuditCommand; Acorn places the class in app/Console/Commands/. After you implement the class and ensure the Acorn-booting theme or plugin is active, use wp acorn seo:audit to execute it.

Acorn exposes Laravel’s Artisan console model inside WordPress. That means a command can use familiar signatures, options, output helpers, and integer exit codes while still calling WordPress APIs such as get_posts(). The result is a practical place for audits, migrations, imports, cleanup jobs, and other maintenance tasks that need a repeatable CLI interface.

What you need before creating a command
Acorn must be installed through Composer and booted by the application in which the command lives. In a theme-based project, that normally means the Acorn-enabled theme is active; in a plugin-based project, the Acorn-booting plugin must be active. WP-CLI cannot discover an Acorn command before that bootstrap runs.
The current Acorn installation documentation lists these baseline requirements:

- An active theme or plugin that boots Acorn.
Check the requirements for the Acorn release installed on your server before deployment. Product pages can display a release such as Acorn v6.3.0, but that version label is volatile; your Composer lock file and the installed release documentation are the authoritative references for a project.
How Acorn commands are discovered
When you run wp acorn, Acorn boots its Laravel components inside WordPress and loads command classes from the conventional application structure. Generated classes belong in app/Console/Commands/. The class’s $signature becomes the command name and its accepted arguments and options, while $description supplies help text. Acorn then calls handle() when WP-CLI dispatches that command.

Generate the command class
- From the WordPress project directory, run
wp acorn make:command SeoAuditCommand. - Open the generated file under
app/Console/Commands/. - Keep the generated namespace and base class unless your application has a deliberate reason to change them.
- Replace the generated signature, description, and
handle()implementation with the behavior your command needs.
The generator gives you the conventional location and class shape; it does not decide the command’s data model, safety rules, or batching strategy. Those belong in your implementation.
Define the signature and lifecycle
The signature is the command’s public interface
Declare the command name, positional arguments, and options in $signature. Put defaults and short explanations there so that wp acorn help can describe the interface without requiring readers to inspect PHP code.

Use handle() for the work
Acorn’s console helpers are available inside handle(). Use $this->info() for successful progress or results, $this->error() for failures, $this->line() for neutral text, and $this->newLine() to separate sections. For an interactive command, $this->components->ask() can request a value from the operator.
Return an integer from handle(). A successful run should return a success code; validation or operational failures should return a non-zero failure code. Correct exit status matters when a command is called from deployment scripts, cron, or another automation system.
Build a complete SEO-audit command
The following example reads the declared options, validates the limit, queries WordPress, reports a simple issue, and returns an appropriate status. The SEO rule is intentionally small; replace it with the checks your site actually needs.

}The example treats findings as a failure status so an automated job can stop when issues exist. If findings are informational in your workflow, return success after reporting them and reserve failure for an inability to complete the audit. Decide that contract before other systems depend on it.

Arguments, options, and safe defaults
Choose semantics deliberately
A positional argument makes the invocation self-identifying: wp acorn seo:inspect 123 clearly targets one post. An option makes the invocation easier to extend: wp acorn seo:audit --post-type=page --limit=50 can add filters later without changing the command’s basic identity.
Document defaults directly in the signature where possible. A default such as post prevents an empty filter, while a finite limit protects a command from unexpectedly loading an entire site into memory. Still validate values in handle(); signature defaults do not replace runtime validation.
Add dry-run behavior before destructive work
For cleanup, migration, or import commands, add a boolean --dry-run option. Perform the same selection and reporting logic in both modes, but guard writes behind the option. Operators can then verify the target set and expected count before allowing changes.
Keep reruns safe
Design the operation to be idempotent when practical: running it twice should not duplicate records, apply a transformation repeatedly, or delete a newly changed item accidentally. Use stable identifiers, check the current state before writing, and report what was skipped because it was already complete.

- Run the default form:
wp acorn seo:audit. - Override options as needed:
wp acorn seo:audit --post-type=page --limit=50. - Review the generated help:
wp acorn help seo:audit. - Check the output and shell exit status in the calling script.
Help output should tell an operator what the command does, which values are accepted, and what defaults apply. Keep descriptions action-oriented. If an option is dangerous, state that in the option description and require an explicit switch such as --confirm or --dry-run followed by a write mode.

Combine Acorn services with WordPress APIs
Acorn commands are useful because they bridge two sets of tools. Laravel-style console services handle signatures, prompts, output, and lifecycle; WordPress functions provide access to posts, metadata, users, taxonomies, and other site data. Keep the boundary clear: read command input through Acorn’s option and argument methods, perform WordPress work with WordPress APIs, and use console helpers only for operator feedback.
For long operations, avoid fetching an unbounded collection in one call. Process a bounded batch, emit progress, and make the command restartable. A finite option such as --limit is a useful first safeguard, but a migration that must cover thousands of records may need paging or a cursor rather than one large get_posts() result. Monitor memory use on production-sized data before choosing the batch size.
Interactive prompts are appropriate for a one-off administrator action, not for unattended jobs. A command that may run under cron or CI should accept all required values as arguments or options and fail clearly when a required value is missing.

Decide whether the work belongs in a command, schedule, or queue

The command can remain the operator-facing entry point even when the underlying work is delegated. For example, a command might validate options, enqueue batches, and report the number submitted, while a worker performs the expensive per-record operation. Do not force a long-running task into an interactive process merely because it starts from WP-CLI.

- Declare a numeric
--daysoption and reject zero or negative values. - List the records selected before deletion when running in dry-run mode.
- Delete only the intended post status and post type.
- Process records in bounded batches rather than loading an unlimited set.
- Return failure if a database operation cannot complete, not merely because zero records matched.
- Print the deleted count and the cutoff used so an operator can audit the run.
The important design lesson is that the command name, option parsing, WordPress query, safety checks, and reporting all live in one repeatable interface. The exact deletion query depends on the site’s retention policy and should not be copied without reviewing those rules.
Troubleshoot “acorn is not a registered wp command”
If wp acorn returns Error: 'acorn' is not a registered wp command., WP-CLI has not found a booted Acorn application. Work through these checks in order:

- Confirm the Composer installation completed in the same WordPress project whose
wpcommand you are running. - Verify the PHP binary used by WP-CLI meets the installed Acorn release’s requirement; the current installation page lists PHP 8.3 or newer.
- Check that WordPress meets the stated minimum of 5.4 or newer and that WP-CLI is available.
- Activate the theme or plugin responsible for booting Acorn. An inactive bootstrap prevents discovery even when the package exists in
vendor. - Run the command from the correct WordPress root, or provide WP-CLI’s normal path context so it loads the intended installation.
- After the bootstrap works, check the generated file path and class for PHP parse errors, an incorrect namespace, or a signature typo.
Once wp acorn itself works, use wp acorn help seo:audit. If help cannot find the command, inspect the class under app/Console/Commands/, confirm the class name matches the file, and fix any fatal error that occurs while Acorn loads the application.

- The Acorn-booting theme or plugin is active in the target environment.
- PHP, WordPress, and WP-CLI satisfy the installed Acorn release’s requirements.

Final guidance
A custom Acorn command should feel like a small, well-defined application: its signature is the contract, handle() coordinates the work, WordPress APIs provide site data, and output plus exit codes make the result observable. Start with the generated class, keep the command discoverable under app/Console/Commands/, test it with the smallest safe scope, and only then expand it into unattended maintenance.
