Option C, “Deathwish,” is the best-supported canon reading of Grand Theft Auto V. Its final mission, “The Third Way,” allows Franklin, Michael and Trevor to survive. That outcome fits the later continuity associated with GTA Online, where material has been interpreted as placing Michael and Trevor alive and retaining Franklin in the wider story. However, this is a continuity-based conclusion, not a publicly documented Rockstar announcement declaring Option C officially canon.
For Grand Theft Auto VI, the confirmed answer is narrower: Rockstar’s published overview introduces Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos in Vice City and the state of Leonida, but does not say that a particular GTA V ending controls the new game or confirm the return of Franklin, Michael or Trevor.

The short answer: Deathwish is the de facto canon ending
Franklin’s final decision in GTA V offers three outcomes. He can kill Trevor, kill Michael, or choose the “Deathwish” plan. Choosing Deathwish leads to the mission “The Third Way,” in which the three protagonists survive the finale.
Option C is the strongest canon interpretation because subsequent GTA Online dialogue and story material have been read as placing both Michael and Trevor alive, while Franklin remains part of the continuing world. A choice that kills either Michael or Trevor would sit uneasily with that later material. In practical terms, the all-survive ending is the one that creates the fewest continuity contradictions.

The wording matters. It is accurate to call Option C the best-supported canon reading, de facto canon or the ending that GTA Online continuity points toward. It is not accurate, on the available evidence, to say that Rockstar issued a formal statement naming Option C as the official ending. The conclusion comes from how later story content treats the characters, not from a direct declaration.
How the three GTA V endings compare
| Choice | Franklin’s action | Protagonists alive after the finale | Fit with the reported GTA Online continuity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Option A | Franklin kills Trevor | Franklin and Michael | Conflicts with later material interpreted as placing Trevor alive |
| Option B | Franklin kills Michael | Franklin and Trevor | Conflicts with later material interpreted as placing Michael alive |
| Option C: “Deathwish” | Franklin attempts to save all three protagonists | Franklin, Michael and Trevor | Best fit for the subsequent continuity discussed in reporting |
Option A: killing Trevor
In Option A, Franklin chooses Trevor as the target. Trevor dies, while Franklin and Michael remain alive at the conclusion. This ending is a complete playable resolution, but it becomes difficult to reconcile with later references or appearances that treat Trevor as living in the ongoing universe.
Option B: killing Michael
Option B makes Michael the sacrifice. Franklin and Trevor survive, and the story closes on that altered relationship. As with Option A, it works as an individual ending but creates a continuity problem if later material assumes Michael is still alive.

Option C: Deathwish and “The Third Way”
Deathwish is Franklin’s attempt to avoid killing either of his partners. “The Third Way” resolves the immediate threat while preserving Franklin, Michael and Trevor. Because it leaves every major protagonist available for later appearances, it is the most flexible ending for a shared continuing timeline.

Why GTA Online is the key evidence
The argument for Option C comes primarily from continuity after the single-player campaign. Later GTA Online updates and dialogue have been interpreted as treating Michael and Trevor as alive. Franklin also continues to appear in the online setting. Taken together, those elements support the all-survive outcome more strongly than either ending in which one protagonist is killed.
This evidence is indirect. A later character reference can establish how a subsequent story is operating without proving that Rockstar intended every player’s original choice to be overwritten. GTA V presents its three endings as selectable conclusions, and the game does not display a conventional “canon ending” label after the choice. The continuity inference therefore rests on the needs of later stories: if those stories use Michael and Trevor as living figures, Deathwish is the ending that accommodates them both.
That distinction also explains why different descriptions use terms such as “de facto canon.” The phrase means that one ending best matches the material that followed. It does not mean a formal announcement has been found. The available reporting describes in-game continuity and dialogue rather than quoting Rockstar declaring, “Option C is canon.”

What Rockstar has officially said about GTA VI
Rockstar’s official GTA VI overview centers on Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Their relationship, criminal circumstances and dependence on one another form the premise. The setting is Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, rather than the Los Santos-centered environment of GTA V.

- This game will no longer support Windows 7 or 8 operating systems starting January 30, 2024.
That official overview does not state that GTA V’s ending determines the plot of GTA VI. It also does not name Franklin, Michael or Trevor, and it does not confirm that any of them will appear. The absence of those details is important: an official synopsis can establish the new game’s announced premise, but it cannot be used to infer unannounced character returns.
Does GTA V’s ending directly affect GTA VI?
No direct consequence has been confirmed. The strongest responsible conclusion is conditional:
- If GTA VI follows the continuity suggested by GTA Online, Deathwish is the ending that avoids having already killed Michael or Trevor.
- Rockstar’s published GTA VI material does not confirm that this continuity link governs the new game.
- Nothing in the reviewed official overview says that a GTA V choice changes Jason and Lucia’s story, unlocks a particular plotline or determines who appears.
That leaves Option C as a sensible background assumption for fans mapping the series into one timeline, but not as a confirmed story mechanic. The distinction protects against turning a continuity reading into a spoiler or announcement that Rockstar has not made.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill Franklin, Michael or Trevor be in GTA VI?
There is no confirmed answer in the official material reviewed. Rockstar’s overview names Jason and Lucia, not the three protagonists from GTA V. It would therefore be speculation to present a cameo, supporting role or major return for any of them as established fact.

- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
The characters could theoretically exist in the same fictional universe without appearing in the new game. Conversely, a future trailer or announcement could introduce a returning character, but that would be new information rather than something implied by the choice of Deathwish alone. The safest present-tense statement is that Option C keeps all three available in continuity, while the official GTA VI description does not promise their involvement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the canon question remains unresolved in a branching game
GTA V was designed around a branching final decision. Each option gives Franklin a different relationship with Michael and Trevor and supplies a playable ending. Once a later project needs a single shared timeline, however, it has to favor one branch or write around the alternatives.
Deathwish is especially convenient for that purpose because it preserves the largest cast. A later story can refer to Michael without contradicting the finale, use Trevor without resurrecting him, and retain Franklin without explaining an earlier death. That narrative convenience is a major reason the ending is widely treated as the continuing version of events.

Unless Rockstar explicitly labels one branch canonical, the original three-way structure remains part of the single-player experience. Players who chose Option A or Option B still completed valid endings; the continuity question concerns which branch later stories appear to assume.

What is known about GTA VI’s release context
When Rockstar’s landing page was checked on October 13, 2026, it listed GTA VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with a planned release date of November 19, 2026. Release dates and product details can change, so that date should be rechecked against Rockstar’s current page before relying on it.
The platform listing is useful launch information, not evidence about the story. It does not establish whether the game will reference the ending a player selected in GTA V, whether GTA Online continuity carries over directly, or whether any earlier protagonist returns.
How to describe the answer accurately
Use this wording
- “Deathwish is the best-supported canon reading of GTA V.”
- “GTA Online continuity points to Option C because Michael, Trevor and Franklin remain usable as living characters.”
- “The evidence supports a de facto canon, not a documented Rockstar declaration.”
- “GTA VI’s official overview introduces Jason and Lucia in Vice City and Leonida without confirming a link to any GTA V ending.”
Avoid these claims
- Do not say Rockstar officially announced Option C as canon unless Rockstar publishes such a statement.
- Do not say GTA VI will feature Franklin, Michael or Trevor based only on the survival of those characters in Deathwish.
- Do not say that choosing Option C in GTA V directly changes the plot of GTA VI.
Bottom line for players
If “canon” means the ending that best fits the continuing universe, choose Option C: Deathwish, followed by “The Third Way.” It preserves all three protagonists and aligns with the later GTA Online continuity described in reporting. If “canon” means an ending Rockstar has formally declared in an official statement, that declaration has not been established here.
For GTA VI, keep the conclusion limited. Rockstar has confirmed Jason and Lucia, Vice City and Leonida, but not a plot consequence from Franklin’s final choice and not the return of any GTA V protagonist. Deathwish is therefore the most compatible bridge between the games, not proof of what the new story will contain.
