OD is an in-development horror game project from Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios. Its creators say it will explore fear and blur the line between games and film, but they have not yet explained its full gameplay, story, release timing or complete platform list.
What is OD?
OD is a horror project created by Hideo Kojima’s Kojima Productions in partnership with Xbox Game Studios. The two companies announced it at The Game Awards in December 2023. Kojima Productions describes the concept as testing a player’s fear threshold and asking “what it means to OD on fear,” while blurring the boundaries between gaming and film. That is the studio’s creative framing, not a detailed account of how the game plays.

Kojima has also characterized the project as a new form of media. At the announcement, he said: “We are working with Xbox Game Studios and their cloud gaming technology to take on the challenge of creating a very unique, immersive, and totally new style of game – or rather, a new form of media.” The partnership announcement and later statements do not spell out how cloud technology will be used in the finished game or specify its technical requirements. Kojima Productions’ OD announcement and Xbox’s 2022 partnership announcement establish the collaboration and its cloud-technology context.

Kojima Productions named filmmaker Jordan Peele as one of several storytellers involved in OD. The announcement did not present him as the project’s sole writer or director.

Cast and performance capture
Kojima Productions announced Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer and Udo Kier in lead roles. Xbox’s September 2026 update showed Lillis and Schafer in performance-capture footage. That footage confirms their participation in capture work, but the available updates do not clarify the current role status of every announced performer. Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2026 update includes the footage.
What has been shown about the game?
Kojima Productions presented a teaser titled OD: Knock at its tenth-anniversary event in 2025. The teaser offers a glimpse of the project, but it does not establish the full player experience or story. TechRadar reported that the teaser was developed in Unreal Engine 5 and quoted Kojima describing a new system and repeated testing. In September 2026, Kojima said performance capture and ADR recording—additional dialogue recording—had resumed after being paused during the SAG strike, and that production was proceeding on schedule. Xbox also shared performance-capture footage in its September update. In an October 2026 interview report, Kojima said filming had resumed in June and would continue through the end of the year, while ADR work would carry into 2027. What is still unknown about OD?
The announcements and updates available as of October 2026 leave several central questions unanswered. Kojima has said, “I normally put out teaser after teaser. This time I don’t want to reveal much,” as reported by GamesRadar+ in October 2026. Readers should treat theories about the game’s mechanics or plot as speculation until the studio provides more detail.
