On Steam Deck, sleep is the device’s low-power state, suspend is what happens to the running game as the Deck enters sleep, and quick resume is Valve’s name for waking back into that game. Press the power button during play to suspend the game and put the Deck to sleep; press it again to wake the device where you left off. Valve describes this built-in behavior for Steam Deck, including LCD and OLED models—not a system for keeping several games suspended for quick switching.
What do sleep, suspend, and quick resume mean?
| Term | What it refers to on Steam Deck | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Sleep | The Deck’s low-power state after you press the power button. | The device goes to sleep while the game is suspended. |
| Suspend | What Valve says happens to the running game as the Deck enters sleep. | The current game is paused in the power-button flow; it is not a separate gameplay mode you select. |
| Quick resume | Valve’s phrase for waking back into the game you left. | Press the power button again to wake the Deck back where you left off. Valve’s description does not promise multiple suspended games ready to switch between. |
Valve describes the sequence on its Steam Deck product page: press the power button, and Steam Deck suspends the game and enters sleep; press it again and the Deck wakes where you left off. The wording describes one current game, so “quick resume” should not be read as a multi-game session manager.
Does Steam Deck suspend or sleep when you press the power button?
Both descriptions apply to the same action: the game is suspended and the device goes to sleep. To use it, press the power button while playing; press the button again when you want to wake the Deck and return to the game. Valve identifies the feature as part of SteamOS on its product page and names both LCD and OLED Steam Deck models there; OLED is not required for this behavior.
Does quick resume keep multiple games ready?
Valve’s public description says the Deck wakes back into the game you left off in. It does not establish that several games can remain suspended and be switched between as a built-in Quick Resume library. Treat the feature as a convenient way to pause the current session while the Deck sleeps, rather than a guarantee of multi-game storage.

What happens to downloads while the Deck sleeps?
Ordinary game suspend/resume is distinct from Valve’s display-off low-power downloads mode. Valve added this mode to the stable client on November 17, 2025. It lets active downloads finish with the display off before the Deck enters sleep. Valve says it is enabled by default when the Deck is plugged into power; on battery, it can be enabled at Settings > Power. This is for downloads, not a different way to suspend or resume a game.
Is Steam Deck resume guaranteed to work perfectly?
No. Resume is a built-in convenience, but behavior can vary by game, peripheral, or network connection. Valve release notes have included fixes for issues after resume, including audio problems and controls briefly locking. Those fixes show that post-resume problems can occur; they do not mean every game or accessory will fail.

If a resume problem persists, Valve’s basic troubleshooting guidance is to install available system updates and restart the Deck. Its Steam Deck basic-use and troubleshooting guide applies to both LCD and OLED models unless otherwise indicated.

Valve’s June 2026 SteamOS release notes mention “Preliminary support for hibernation” in the LCD BIOS notes. That wording is not enough to treat hibernation as an ordinary, fully supported alternative to the standard power-button sleep and resume flow.
