If you mean the cooperative card game Level 10, it is a team game for 1 to 5 players in which everyone works toward one shared goal: placing every card in a 5-by-10 grid before anyone runs out of legal moves. The game has no winner against the other players. Either the whole group wins or the whole group loses. The name is also used for unrelated games and for simply reaching a tenth level in a video game, so this article covers only the card game.

The premise: helping Izzy through five worlds

The publisher, Grail Games, describes the game this way: “Help Izzy jump, fly and fight his way through all five worlds in the land of Woz in this co-operative card game.” Each of the five worlds is a row in the play area: Desert, Forest, Sky, Volcano and Swamp. Players build their way across these rows by placing numbered Level Cards in order, using Reset Cards and Pause Cards to keep the sequence moving. (Grail Games, Level 10 product page)

What is in the box

According to the official English rulebook, the game contains:

  • 40 Level Cards, numbered, sorted by world.
  • 10 Reset Cards, two for each world.
  • 3 Pause Cards, which can stand in for a Level Card.

The goal uses all 50 Level and Reset Cards. The Pause Cards are not part of that count, but they still affect how the deck is built and how much slack the team has. (Level 10 Game Instructions (English))

  • COOPERATIVE GAME: Players are not competing against one another, but working together as a team to help Izzy play through all 10 levels in each of the 5 worlds.
  • FUN FAMILY GAME: Players of all ages will enjoy the fun and nostalgic artwork featuring 8-bit graphics! Several difficulty levels offer even more challenges and variability.
  • NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: This fun card game for kids and adults is made for 1 to 5 players and is suitable for ages 8 and older. Average playtime is approximately 20 minutes.

How a game is set up

Before the first turn, the group chooses a difficulty, which sets how many Pause Cards enter the deck. Then each player is dealt a starting hand whose size depends on how many people are playing:

Players Starting hand per player
1 10 cards
2 7 cards each
3 6 cards each
4 5 cards each
5 4 cards each

Hand sizes shrink as the group grows, so a five-player table has fewer cards per person but more people to coordinate with. The rulebook also describes solo play with a 10-card hand, so the game can be played alone. Grail Games and Asmodee both list 1 to 5 players.

  • The deck is color blind accessible with special graphic symbols on each card to help identify its color, allowing players with any form of color blindness to play!

The central rule: you cannot show your hand

The tension in Level 10 comes from communication limits. Players may not show their cards or give hints about the numbers they hold. Instead, the rules allow only three kinds of statement:

  • How many cards you hold in a particular world.
  • A suggestion of which world you think should be played on your turn.
  • A wish to play a Reset Card for a particular world.

Everything else has to be inferred from what players do, which is why the game rewards careful table talk and punishes anyone who talks too freely.

How a turn works

Placement follows strict rules, so it helps to read the grid in order:

  1. Match the world. Every Level Card in a row must belong to that row’s world.
  2. Keep numbers rising. Within a row, numbers must stay the same or increase from left to right.
  3. Reset when needed. A Reset Card returns the sequence to zero, so the next card can be a low number.
  4. Fill columns in order. Each column must be completed before a new one starts. A completed column contains one Reset Card and four Level or Pause Cards.
  5. Use Pause Cards for flexibility. A Pause Card can be played in place of a Level Card. When you place one, you may also discard a Level Card from the same world beneath it, if you hold one.

A Pause Card does not change the objective. It buys time and a little room to move.

Difficulty levels

The rules list four difficulty levels: Noob, Standard, Pro and Master. The setting is controlled by the number of Pause Cards in the deck. Fewer Pause Cards make the game harder, because there is less flexibility when a card cannot be legally placed. Choosing a level is the main way to tune the challenge without changing the rules.

How the game ends

The team wins when all 50 Level and Reset Cards have been placed. The game ends in defeat as soon as a player has no legal action. The official rules state: “If a player cannot perform either of these actions on their turn, the game ends immediately and the players have lost!” Because one player’s dead end ends the game for everyone, the group succeeds or fails together.

Play time and age range

Grail Games lists a playing time of 15 to 30 minutes and an age of 8 and up. Asmodee USA lists a 30-minute average and a recommended age of 8. These are published estimates from the publisher and retailer, not measured play times. A table that reads quickly and makes frequent mistakes will run longer, and a group that already knows the rules may finish faster.

Where to find it and availability

The physical game is published by Matagot and distributed in the United States through Asmodee USA. At the time of writing, the Asmodee USA listing showed the game as sold out, so check the Asmodee USA product page for current stock before planning a purchase. Prices and stock change frequently, so the listing is the best place to check them. The rulebook is available to read or download from the Grail Games product page.

Is Level 10 the right game for your table?

Level 10 suits groups who enjoy puzzles where a silent, shared plan matters more than individual cleverness. It works as a short game for families with children aged 8 and older, and as a quick cooperative game for adults. Its communication limits make it less suitable for players who want to talk freely through every move, and the all-or-nothing ending means one mistake can end a good run.

If you want to know whether a particular copy suits your group, compare the player counts and age range above with the people you plan to play with.
